Gunner = Arcade Action Cam for the 12 yr olds?

I seriously would have expected to see Turrets running via "Turret Cam" instead (i.e. degraded Video stream and eventually losing one Cam when a Turret reaches 0% Integrity).
Just as to keep it rooted into the "we're actually inside a Spaceship" meme, not in "We're doing a space Arcade Shooter optimized for Consoles".

It's basically the same view that the original Independence War used for the gunnery station, the computer is just giving you a gussied up view of the ship instead of a wireframe.

I'm with OP on this. Gunner feature in this 'imaginary 360 cam' form does not belong in space SIM like ED.
I was expecting something like SRV turret solution but nothing like this.

Basically, think of it as you're sitting right in the center of the ship, such that when the ship turns in place, it has zero effect on you because it's rotating around you.

Now imagine the entire ship is invisible. So whichever way you look your view has no obstructions, like you're in a glass bubble in space.

That would be a cool togglable option, actually! I can see three valid arguments for this third person mechanic:

1) It's cool as hell as is, and will make for rad-awesome screenshots

2) Your way, which is probably cooler for VR, and would make rad-awesome screenshots

3) Actual turret control POV, would make cool screenshots and is already proven technology with the SRV turret.

Then don't use it. You already fly a gunship, you already know the meaning of true pain anyway.

I like the 3rd person cam.
But seriously , immersion breaking? Just accept Elite is a game.

There are countless examples in Elite of tech that should be breaking your immersion.
You think that in more than a thousand years we will still be dogfighting in space... within a few kilometers from eachother?
And we will be flying that ship with a joystick?
Sure sure...

Again, I am sorry for being so vocal all of a sudden but I don't want one of you getting any bright ideas and advocating for "you must be triple Elite to activate third person view" or whatever nonsense people like to suggest for ruining my favorite space game.

"Cheap development?" Yeah, I really hope you're not trying to suggest vast amounts of money being pumped into a space game's development cycle means quality because oh man, do I have some space ship pictures I wanna sell you!

Braben almighty ITS NOT A SIM. From DAY 1 the flight model gives it away!!

"THIRD PERSON IS NOT REALISTIC!!" screamed the Commander, as his thrusterless ship gently drifts to a stop in zero gravity.

Seriously, the cognitive dissonance of some people can be really sad when it comes to this game.

Let me help you all.

I remember when Elite did not have debug cam - me and many others asked about some sort of beauty shots tool... we were ridiculed as a cod kids, ask to play other games...
And now when FD went other extreme and gave us 3p with hud prety much its all good and dandy?
Call me confused. Make up your mind ppl.

Off the top of my head, there's a couple of ways:

Firstly, make the whole view semitransparent similar to the station interfaces and the ship HUD. Make it so they can see the wall they are looking at through the hologram that is surrounding them, while if they look down they can see the HOTASesque controls that ships seem to use in ED.

Secondly, rather than making it a physical display, make it a heavily augmented tactical display with the actual visuals based off thermal signatures that our sensors seem to rely upon.

Sounds pretty good!! +1 rep. Would love to see that!

Why doesn't it belong in a space sim when a more realistic space sim like I-War had exactly this feature with the tactical station having a 3d view that allowed some advanced maneuvers while keeping track of a target?
And that is a sim that even had actual newtonian physics and modelled certain aspects of ship management in better detail than Elite does.

No more first person available for you or what are you saying? You dont make any sense.

I'm sure you can understand that for every third person only camera used in the game there is no first person one offered. This is a first person focused game, hence any third person only content is taking away the first person content people purchased this game and expansion for. Thats pretty simple stuff right there fella.

I really wish Frontier had gone for the I-WAR 1 option. Heck, there's a lot of things I wish Frontier would take from I-WAR 1.

Honestly, my ulterior motive is I kind of want an excuse for the ship to drop you into the "fishbowl" that the camera images are displayed on, the screens flickering to life as you take control of the turrets. That animation would be *so cool*.

Like the inside of an ADF-01 Falken from Ace Combat 5, or when you hop into a Titan in one of the Titanfall games.

And then accelerates to 500 meters a second in an instant and your brain doesn't turn into mush in the back of your skull. Or the simple fact that we can HEAR things. In space! People!

You, I like! We should make some cool movies, maybe divebomb some canyons or such.

We can actually do that now, be cool pilots, instead of playing ships that store a pilot inside of them.

(My guys are going nuts about the awesome new camera tools they're going to have, and it's going to make this game a lot more popular I think!)

So far this patch looks like it only adds things I have 0 interest in... again... yay...

THat... that's so sad. You don't have anyone you want to play with? Bad internet connection?

This is sincere, btw, you have earned a small measure of my respect by having an avatar of the best manga hero. I am trying to reach out, and save you from the void.

Gameplay mechanics /= content

If you want to run turrets with no o e using them in first person you can already do that.

What if the just put the image in a smaller frame right in front of you in your seat? It would be first person then. Lol
