General / Off-Topic Dehumanizing your opponents = Not Cool

You cannot dehumanize that which is not human. NPC's are not human.

OP take a moment to be sure you can tell the difference. Consider all of the terrible things we do to NPC's, and then decide if name calling is the worst of it.

I encourage all players to put Hercules on their KOS list. It would be fun, emergent content for Mr. Hercules.

Edit: I wonder how tough Hercules is when he isn't funneling Asps into an Anarchy mailslot.

Well this thread didn't make sense too much.

an objectionable or obnoxious person, or such persons collectively.

Im just the one with many personalities, but anyway...

'verminstar' was the name given to a strontium dog bounty hunter and vampire previously known as 'Durham Red' from the 2000AD comics about 12 to 15 years ago...first used as what I called a 'cyno alt' account when I played eve...an entirely unique account which had a very specific purpose of infiltration to use a cyno, which then had me in my main account jump in in something a lot more dangerous. Working alone, this had advantages and trust was never an issue as I used both account simultaneously on two separate pc...the good old days ^

Became my new name after I lived upto the 'vermin' name, and did something really bad to a corp in said game...robbed them of almost a trillion isk all told and helped setup their leader when they were alone in a very rare ship for a humiliating assasination. The consequences of which were...a defining moment of pride from almost 5 months of prep work that a great plan came together flawlessly.

Sounds pretty objectionable to me ^

So would you be cool with referring to NPCs using sexual, racial, or gender terms? I don't think you would be, and for good reasons, because of the pain those terms have caused over the centuries. "Vermin" has led to those same atrocities.

OP please stop playing video games NOW. And not just that, but also games like chess (where you murder peasants and beat women) and Monopoly.

Please just think about it.

Actually, provided its in context. I have no problem with racial or sexual vilification being depicted. I don't think its right to glorify it, but its OK to show it for what it is.

Nope, I actually served there. 1994. CC-130 aircrew.

And you learned so much, you had to quote from an irrelevant source that actually doesn't really support your obvious thought.

Clearly you must have served sandwiches.

What about those poor homeless people fleeing from conflicts in the galaxy and viruses? How dare FD put it in the game!

I don't share OP's objection to the use of the word vermin in game.
But justifying anything with "it's a game" is ludicrous.

E: D is sold with a Pegi 7 rating, and for example no descriptor giving warning for game content that could encourage discrimination.

Just because "it's a game" does not absolve the publisher for responsibility regarding suitability of game content.

These fora! Jeez.

"Thank you for clearing our system of these vermin!" is what the controlling faction representative said to me after I wiped out some rebels.

This is not OK. Yeah, "It's just a game" is what the response will be, but history says different. I have a personal connection to what happened in Rwanda, and here's a link to how the controlling faction there referred to its opponents: http://www.ppu.org.uk/genocide/g_rwanda4.html

Please just think about it.

Nonsense. For so many reasons. Stop playing any game that includes violence and aggravation and death if you`re going to play some kind of sjw\victim game. In fact, I know this is a huge troll post.

Just... stop.

STAHP.

Even the game trailers have warnings on them for references to slavery and drugs.

If the game offends you (in general) so much, uninstall, and log off from these forums, and just move on. I'm being serious here - if you (in general) get THIS offended at a videogame, go expend your life's energy and time doing something else which won't affect you (in general) so negatively!

Would you be cool with killing NPCs? Oh wait, you are. Seriously, your sense of "values" are beyond skewed and I strongly suggest that you need to uninstall ED and go play Candy Crush. Anything else is probably just too traumatizing.

Your entire premise is beyond idiotic - to compare a mass genocide of REAL PEOPLE to a load of pixels on screen.

Wars happen all the time, but war itself isn't illegal. The reasons for a war can be illegal (war crimes). A war of extermination where opponents are referred to as vermin is and has been found to be illegal. Full stop. So now in this game we have wars where the opponents are described as vermin, and people are OK with that. But in the game we'd never allow opponents to be described as, well, use your imaginations but let's say racially, sexually "different" than the prevalent culture.

It's just something I wonder about.

I understand what you are saying but I have to point out to you what is blindingly obvious to me from what you have written.

You have taken part in the genocide. This did not bother you in the slightest - not a single word of regret for your actions have been posted. But, when you go to hand in the mission and get paid the credits owed for your murder spree you start to complain about the wording used... Yet you murdered these 'virtual people' referred to as vermin.

Ignore the whole game thing please as you are relating this to real life so lets just forget that barrier.

So my question to the OP is why is it acceptable for you to murder people but not vermin?

Is it worse to dehumanise people in order to justify treating them badly or to be fully aware that you're treating people badly but do it anyway?

You got a point i will give you that! But let me ask you this?

You dehumanising em, or they are inhumane? It does matter!

No, it's what leads to the mass genocide of real people. Normalizing terms like "vermin", even in a video game, leads to atrocities.

You carried out the murders before the word was used... You were quite prepared to murder the virtual people but not the virtual vermin?
