Its a niche game

Being 'niche' and 'lacking depth' have precisely nothing to do with each other, regardless of whether either of them are applicable to ED.

Pointless thread.

OK I'll do this. No it isn't. It's just a bad excuse people fallback on when they can't defend the games flaws.

To which you will say "Call of Duty Call of Duty 12 year olds silver platters muh immersion"

What the hell are you talking about? I can think it's a niche game without being a fanboy. See my sig or my posting history.

FD are here for the money, they want to sell as many copies as possible, to as many people as possible

Which will undoubtedly erode the appeal of the game to it's original niche audience.

Correct.

If I made the most flawless game I could, by my measure, I'd be the only person that could even tolerate playing it.

So what would add "depth" for you?

For starters:

- GENUINE full-on PVP in Open play. It's meant to be an MMO but interaction with other players is very rare. Challenges WITH and AGAINST other players has barely been tapped into at all.
- More lethal AI NPCs. The ones we have are so benign it's laughable.
- Thargoids! Possibly include them in my next point? A 4-way Galactic war.
- A full-on 3-way factional war where players can capture the flag for their factions after landing on (and fighting for) planets planets may have AI or player defenders in ships or SRVs on the surface.
- Group missions in the UI for Open play
- Less buggy and more well thought-out Mining and Engineer career paths. Explorers too.
- An optional Permadeth mode in Open. Maybe a limit of a couple of lives (or even 1) and that's it - back to a basic Viper and 1000 credits.
- A market system that makes sense. Credits have almost become meaningless. Buying Anacondas in a few days, or even a few weeks shouldn't be possible.

Without things like above we have a galaxy full of cashed-up players with optomised ships reduced to be sight-seerers and very little 'game' to be had for them.

Here's what I mean - someone posts says something bad about the game - reply is usually along the lines of "It's not for you/It's not for everyone" insinuating that the poster 'just doesn't get it'

Rubbish

Every single game ever made has been designed to sell as many copies as possible

Developers of niche games still want to sell copies and make money. They're just targeting a smaller market than some developers do.

It's critically important for somebody developing a niche game to actually remember that they're developing a niche game. A niche game which tries to go too "mainstream" will almost invariably end up in an awkward middle ground where it alienates its niche fans without successfully catering to the masses.

We're already seeing a little of those harmful effects through Frontier's increasing focus on combat and gimmicks. The original target market is unhappy with the lack of new content for things like trading and exploring, while the new market they're trying to attract is unhappy with the delayed gratification inherent in the core design.

You can ignore those. Also, the better the feedback, whether bad or not, the less of that you will see.

The game is inherently niche because the audience is niche. There is a reason publishers don't like touching the 'Space Sim' genre, because it's a risky niche.

Not quite so; I would say as many required to keep the company ticking over. As much as possible would mean bigger and better servers.

I think the whole "you don't get it" argument is just insulting to people. Yeah... the person who watched gameplay, bought the game, and played it for a while with high hopes before their criticisms arose and they bothered to voice them. Didn't "get it"

1 open is full pvp if im not wrong
2 isnt all the players good ...and games lives from the casuals not the hardcore...
3 they comeing....
4 capture the flag what u mean? (explain further plz)
5 think they coming too but not sure...
6 engineer is that a profesion? from when? ya mining and explore needs some love
7 u can make that ur self ...every time u die u can reset ur save...
8 for that blame the ones that was whining at the start with repair-refuel costs even some ships costs...

Depth is relative, depends who you ask. There are so many examples on how to add more interesting game play to the game.

Take many of the 3rd party tools, some of them should be in the game from the start. Most of the features we get are just basic and lack a deeper mechanic.

I don't mind a game with flaws, however if the flaws begins to interrupt the overall game play something is wrong with the design.

Take DayZ for years it was full of bugs, however the foundation of the game play was really fun.

ED got a really good environment foundation the galaxy, the flight model, the SRV driving model, the sound and most of the graphic content. But the basic gameplay is just lacking a basic foundation, it's more like Bolt on features that feel misplaced.

It might be niche but it's a big driver of hardware purchases.

How many "I got my vive today" threads are there?
"Advice on setting up my Warthog"
"Second account on another PC"
"Will a 1050 be enough or should I go the 1080"?
"Advice on 4K tv compatiblility"
"Pedals or twist stick?"

etc

I know the game can be played on a raspberry pi or a fit bit, but lots of CMDRs are dropping their entire disposable income on the associated toys. (Doing my tax yesterday - late and kind of embarrassing)
