THE FORMIDINE RIFT MYSTERY (Part 4)

Gravitational anomalies on Merope 5c does ring a bell from the (distant) past of the Cannon thread.... but of course I can't find the reference now :)

I will throw my hat in and say that I also vaguely remember something along these lines too. I think it was way back in 2.0, back before the first barnacle site was found. I can't be sure of any of those details, but there have definitely been reports of random gravity changes (though I think we mostly all assumed bug).

(Edit: If I'm right about timing, then the Canonn thread 5 is probably the place to look... I might have a check through myself if I can bear it :D).

Hi all,
This is a great thread! I follow your progress from afar, it makes interesting reading but I try not to pick up too many spoilers.

I think I can safely assume that everyone here will be trying to take part in the event on 29th April, right?! Well, I wonder if you might support my plea for commanders to have "open doors" for multi-crew during the event so that those who can't get their ship there (like me) can still join in?

If not, I'm sure you've got good reasons.

Cheers :)

I'm on xbox, but certainly will have my ship open for crew. Although I will be in a combat ready ship, I wont have turrets or SLF so my crew seat will be for commanders wishing to observe events only. I just dont have a multi-crew combat ship yet unfortunately, building one is on my to-do list though.

I remember this too. I can help by saying that I didn't start playing properly or visiting the forums until AFTER the first barnacle was discovered. So the reports had to be around then. If I remember correctly it was around the time that people were reporting strange noises from Merope 5C. I think Jorki (forgive me if I'm mistaken) was pushing for the crater to be searched properly on Merope 5C, and there were reports from others that the area had strange gravitational effects and noises. It was brushed off as a bug at the time I believe.

I also had a strange situation around the same time at (once again I think) Palins base and other areas where I dropped like a stone without knowing why, but thought it just a bug as well I may have even filed a bug report about it, never thought to check for an increase of gravity. Maybe I have footage still, will have a look through my things as well as having a browse through the Canon thread where I first joined the discussion.

This has probably been pointed out before, as most things have, but just in case... has anyone noticed that when you zoom right out on the gal map, the Outer Arm seems to come to a rather abrupt end at the OOB AIRG section, which is very much on the RR line?

Of course on a much closer in scale it appears to carry on and extend considerably further round trailward, it is only when viewed from great range that it appears to abruptly become significantly more sparse and you can see where the star density drops off.

The Salome event is scheduled to start 18:00 29th April, and I don't think anything for that event will be put into place until then. However we had Salome apparently leading people to HIP21484 planet 3 & someone reported sounds of some form of beacon near coordinates: -47.4839 and -134.9203.

With the recent listening post find of an alarming message (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/300054-Alien-archeology-and-other-mysteries-Thread-9-The-Canonn?p=5347542&viewfull=1#post5347542 *) I think it might be worth doing a search on planet 3, and possibly also Merope 5C (near centre of the large crater with the central peak) for gravitational anomalies since both locations have reports of what may be a strange radio signal but with nothing visible. We never tried to search for gravitational anomalies (as far as I remember the Canonn threads).

* I think that message was found on Col 285 Sector BG-O d6-93. AB 1 d (-5.836074,117.3792). Did anybody check there for the signal & gravitational anomaly?

Can radio signals be triangulated on-site to narrow down the anomaly search area? Don't remember any mention of this capability.

I have both Sol & Achenar permits, but what ship to use for the event? (Assuming family commitments don't crop up!). Light but fast general purpose Cobra3 with fair jump range, or something with teeth? I think Salome might need bodyguards against the Feds, Imps and their bounty hunters (I haven't forgotten my suspicions Cmdr B! ;) )

Gravitational anomaly confirmed on HIP 21484 Planet 3 (1st pic below shows 1.81g and second pic shows 1.82g in short distance).

Strange signal below. I thought we discounted it as a bug?

I don't believe it is a bug. Stay frosty commander, strange and potentially disastrous things are afoot. Maybe post that audio over on cannon thread, they may have the tools and knowledge to decipher the digital data packet apparently contained in the signal.

Ok, i will...By the way...it was 1.82g and 1.81g...htc vive vr and can't see that well in headset. Will correct.

Out there now, not much we haven't seen already. Crossed over to AICONK from HYUEKH with just OBAGK and non-dwarf/non-protostar selected, applied to route. Heading back in towards Rift now, crossing very much +X of the RR Line and then back to the bubble.

Not even a single Degraded USS to report, no weird lights, no weird noises, no system failures out of the blue. Did exit into a binary primary, but repaired modules and still have 95% hull, PP, and AFMU left.

I'm in HYPIAE AESCS, about 4,500ly away from the OOB AIRG and getting closer. I should reach there sometime tomorrow and I'll help with the search.

Merope 5c had really creepy ambient sound (I have not been there for a long time), I don't think it was confined to a particular place, but it struck me as distinct from other planets, at least I can't recall another like it. Seems quite likely there's something on the surface that we never found.

Search thread is your friend!
Tinfoil hats don't throw very well, they tend to flutter. Possibly if you folded it into an aeroplane shape, or an octagonal prism? ;)

Yes, this is as I remember it!
Never did go to search that crater myself-the thread moved on & it got forgotten. I'm still doing some engineering & want to level 5 upgrade my Vulture thrusters. Might call in at Merope if I can face the jump trip out to Maia.

I responded on the Canonn thread (I was recalling the hypothesis that MA might be used to create an invisibilty camouflage effect), but it might be worth trying to localise the gravitational anomaly in your srv. But give us a good long recording of the sound first (I'm no sound engineer but I think with non-essential ship equipment shut down & using the debug camera) as you might just run into a space termite (thargoid) nest.

Yesterday I checked SOL again, it’s a bit embarrassing but I couldn’t find Styx anymore – so I have to apologize for my claim in post 4700 where I said that Styx would be present in ED’s SOL. But I could swear that I have seen it two days ago on approach to Pluto....... would someone please be so kind and check that ? Would be really great – maybe I’m going to get space madness.....
Yesterday I also checked Orcus (in roman mythology Orcus is the god of the underworld, as Pluto(n) is in greek mythology, in addition to that it represents the dark side of the underworld’s deity; it’s also a body within SOL), just not to oversee something if present. Here I also recognized a really large amount of military ships, even more as on Charon, single ones as well as in wings, they were in orbit, were landed or were patroling the surface. It seemed strange, as if they await or protect something, or both. I also saw many convoys leaving or approaching in a straight line, mostly T7 escorted by Cobras and Vipers, but they were civilian and not military. Also, I hadn’t seen a body before with such density of POIs, they overlapped in amounts of 2, 3 and 4 (!). Within one intersection I found a base, coords noted, will add screenshots in the evening. Last stop yesterday was – Triton. Why is this moon still permit locked ? Tried to approach manually in normal cruise but one can’t descend any further, altimeter stops at 130km above surface, normal behaviour so far. Will keep a keen eye on that.
As I had to go to bed :( I had no time left to check the satellite crash sites on Charon I made out two days ago where I noted the coordinates from, will do that today or during the weekend.

DONT MIND ME IM JUST HERE TO INFORM YOU ABOUT THE GALNET.

It has now been several months since the galaxy's superpowers commented on the mysterious spacecraft seen throughout human-inhabited space.

Some members of the galactic community have publicly wondered why the galaxy's political leaders are keeping silent, but political commentators have been quick to point out that in the absence of concrete information, it is perhaps prudent of the galaxy's leaders to refrain from commentary.

But it seems that, behind closed doors, the superpowers are taking the issue very seriously.

A spokesperson for the Federal Navy has announced that Admiral Aden Tanner, a seasoned military leader with over four decades of experience, has been appointed to the newly created role of Chief of Federal Security. Although the Federation has not elaborated on Admiral Tanner's precise remit, an inaugural statement from the admiral suggests he has been ordered to investigate the mysterious ships, prompting media outlets to nickname him 'the alien tsar'.

In his statement, Admiral Tanner said:

"Having reviewed all available information, we can confirm these craft are active primarily within the Pleiades Nebula and the space in and around the Maia and Merope systems. The significance of these locations – if any – has not yet been determined. We can also confirm, despite rumours to the contrary, that carrying an Unknown Artefact does not attract the attention of these vessels."

"A number of independent pilots claim to have seen evidence that the mysterious ships have attacked human vessels, but no empirical verification has been recovered. Nevertheless, I would urge the galactic community to treat these strange ships with extreme caution."

Admiral Tanner declined to answer questions from media representatives, saying only, "When we know more, you'll know more".

I have heard this sound before, at least 2 times, while flying through space. This sound stayed with me even during jumps.

I dismissed it as a sound-bug since there was nothing unusual happening around me. I therefore can't say where exactly, but it was in the bubble.

HUmm, well yes but don't forget on one picture you are at 3Km away from the ground, the other you are at 0M !
wich can make a difference !

0.01G is very low

Yep. Gravity varies due to a number of factors and most landable planets in Elite: Dangerous aren't perfectly spherical.
