ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Immersion <> presence though.
Presence is tricking your subconscious brain into thinking you are there. Immersion is more about your conscious brain believing in the world you are in.
e.g. in the video I linked a few posts back Abrash talks of a ledge in a box and the box is textured with old webpages. Even though the scene isn't real and doesn't really have much in the way of lighting or setting it still makes him fear falling off the ledge due to presence.

For presence Abrash says all of the following are needed.
  • Wide FOV
  • Adequate resolution
  • Low persistence
  • High refresh rate
  • All pixel display at once rather than rolling
  • Correct optics
  • Correct optical calibration
  • Decent tracking
  • low latency

p.s. I'm not saying you didn't experience presence in static sessions on the DK1, it is possible, just fleeting and you can't move your head. DK2 should makes steps towards having that feeling all the time.

Totally agree with your points :)

It was definitly presence I experienced. It is a very specific sensation that cannot be easily described. It's not unlike a lucid dream. In the scenes above, they each invoked presence whether I moved or stayed still - and that is mainly down to how well crafted those environments are. There are a number of geometric similarities in those images above...lots of straight lines and grids. The sense of presence in these scenes wasn't fleeting for me, but extremely strong - and long lasting. It convinced me beyond any doubt that VR is the future. (Also raises a lot of questions about how we each subjectively view reality).

I also agree that how real the scene is - doesn't have much to do with presence. I also have experienced it in cartoon demos and environments of simple geometry such as a plane to stand on and a few cubes.

The point I was trying to make was that Abrash has also said a few times that different people have different requirements which induce presence. Some people achieve it at a much lower threshold. That said - I assume Oculus are aiming at specifications that induce it in the widest range of people possible - which forms the basis of those requirements they list.

I ordered mine at just after 9am on the 19th, so I should be in the 1st few hundred...and I still haven't had an email from them or any direct contact regarding the delivery date.
As soon as I do I'll post something here.

I didn't order till the 25th of March as I was under the impression you had to pay for it straight away. In the end I did have to because I paid via paypal and they took the full amount but I would have put it in my card if I'd known that they'd only take $50 worth when you preorder and charge the remainder when shipping :(

Oh well. Hopefully not too long till I get my grubby mitts on mine.

Well fingers crossed that as I ordered at 9:05 AM on the 19th (approx) I might be lucky.

Hmm, I wonder how the forum will look like in VR?? :D

Thanks for this. Very interesting.
Based purely on this, and yes I know it's not that accurate, I am in the 2nd Hr since I ordered at 9.30am. So in the 1st few thousand.

Well me and my computer builder mate spent Sunday afternoon shoehorning a 7970 into my HTPC. I didn't think my 6870 would be up to powering the DK2 lovely card but only 1G. This card is just starting too become affordable now.
It fitted with +2/3 mm precision which meant getting the lid on became an art form. Well hopefully I'm ready for DK2 now. CPU might be a little weak but I can OC it. Thankfully we mounted dual water-cooling push-pull externally giving a good thermal overhead.

That's odd. I paid via PayPal but the full amount was taken. I didn't order until the 25th June though. It said August delivery at the time, but I doubt it.

Well, damn. THis shows me just outside the 10k range. :(

I had a go with the HD prototype and elite yesterday and even with out head tracking it is a huge improvment to DK1. I am now really happy I placed a order for the DK2 and can't wait to get it.

I have a 6870 4gb version... am resigning myself o the fact that it likely won't cut the mustard, but am waiting until I see it first before splashing the cash. Besides... if the DK2 is late shipping to me that gives me another month to see if GFX card prices will fall.

With my DK2 arriving soonish hopefully, what other things do I need to buy controller wise (I have a Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS and voice attack for Elite). Is it best to have an xbox controller for other demos/games that are already OR ready?

What are the best sites for getting the demos and games, and which of those games and demos would you experienced Rift users recommend checking out?

whilst I am not saying you WILL be the the 1st 10K (though 5K is where the cool kids are at ;) )I think very little can be taken from that list.

I would say there is a huge probability that the real enthusiasts (aka sad geeks**) are the ones who are most likely to post in that thread.

Therefore I dont think we can scale up the numbers from those on that site as I think it gives an unrealistic slope.

**of which I am most definitely one :)

My order was just after 11am, which on that list would mean no chance of being in the 1st 5k order, however I have not fully given up hope yet.

Every re-seller who gets his order cancelled moves me up the queue so hopefully Oculus will keep on cancelling those orders ;)

Don't start stockpiling demos yet.
They won't work with the DK2.
The creators of the software need to recompile against the new SDK to get it to work with the DK2 and there aren't many that have done that yet. No doubt they will though as DK2's start to arrive.

Regards actual games you could buy some now, Steam has a semi decent collection of VR games.

I would recommend Euro Truck Simulator 2 (yeah really :) ), Assesto Corsa, Among the Sleep, Dream and Snow. Couple of them are early access so are in Alpha/Beta.

I've got the T-Flight as well, as it doesn't have quite enough buttons for the DK2 use I'll be trying out VA as well, either that or I'll sellotape the kids to the desk and make them push buttons when I shout at them.

God I hope you're right.

They say that they sold 12k in the first 36 hours... I hope that means that most in the first 24 are below the 10k limit.
