What's with all the guys using female avatars?

Being a true red-blooded male, I have nightmares about lady-boys. The thought of inviting a voluptuous female commander into my ship and then finding out that she has an Adam's apple and speaks in a gruff voice makes me cringe.

This is partly why the game is called Elite: "Dangerous". :D

Trying to get mine as close as possible to how I look.

I think I'm quite handsome in Elite Dangerous... (I think it's the camera and pose that captures it.)

Why would I want to make believe it is some other than what I am? 99% of the time I don't fly looking at myself.

I recently had to fill in a mental psych review. One question stated do you like to roleplay as a different sex. I think 99% of people here just said yes. Enjoy those therapy sessions.

"roleplay" is a vague word. If we're talking about games like this anyone with an ounce of imagination would say yes. If we're talking about bedroom gymnastics or social manipulation those are completely different things. There are very different kinds of "roleplay".

Does it really matter though?

If another person enjoys playing the game in a certain way, wether it's with a male or female toon, good on them, they spent the money on the game and decide how to play it, and that's all that matters!

Two words:
Lara Croft.

Or horizon: zero dawn, really cool and beautiful game, who cares if the character you play as is female, the game is tons of fun!

Had some time away from the forums recently, because I haven't been playing much.

And this is the second-top thread on the list.

So we're having this discussion YET AGAIN, are we? And 17 pages' worth of it as well? Even though the count of how many times this has been 'discussed' on games forums must look something like the US national debt figure by now.

Look, I know everyone's got their reliable old stock of jokes, mockery, veiled accusations, defences, justifications, progressive or "anti-political-correctness" statements, or jibes at the expense of LGBT people and we need to give them an airing every time this comes up. But really, this OP warranted one of two responses depending on his own intentions.

For legitimate curiosity: "Because games with roleplaying or character creation elements allow for imagination and don't limit people to being who they are in real life. People have lots of reasons for creating the characters they play. Also, welcome to games."

For implied disapproval: "Because the game allows them to. Deal with it."

Whats "LGBT people"?

your post sounds very serious, i'd imagine most play as female's because they have boobies, and boobies are fun.

I'm a very serious person - though not without a deep appreciation for boobies, I assure you.

Even so, boobies are one (two?) of the many reasons I referred to. Beyond that, "the game allows it" is really all the explanation that's required.

Yes, agree with all of this. In a way it's an eye opener, because you realize that if people are this weird about boys playing as girls in a game then it's no surprise that those who are genuinely trans in real life face a lot of fear and prejudice. Transphobia is alive and well sadly.
