What's with all the guys using female avatars?

I don't think it matters. It's escapism.

Why would I want to play as myself? I'm myself for all other hours of the day. It's a game.

Female characters are way better and fun to look at and create than male!

Women play as male characters and no-one cares.

Exact same reason I have a female bobble head - not male!

OP here. Wow, my simple question really took off I see. I noticed a couple people expressed some offense to my question. I just want to clarify I don't see anything wrong, was just curious. I have not even bothered to make an avatar, I'm still using the generic black helmet guy and probably always will.

Short answer to your original question - it is just fiction and people create the avatar they want to create, maybe they would add some backstory to the character so as to give it a sense of immersion but overall it is all just fiction. Typically in RPGs I create a mix of characters of both genders and find establishing backstories a nice bit of fun.

Whats "LGBT people"?

your post sounds very serious, i'd imagine most play as female's because they have boobies, and boobies are fun.

Well, the male "G" component of 'LGBT people' could be defined as someone like me whose only real experience of 'boobies' is typing that word out on a calculator in primary school. And in that case, yes - boobies were fun!

:p

For myself, I'd want to make clear that I didn't find your question offensive if, as you say, you were "just curious". I've no reason to doubt that. If my comment came over as abrasive, it's because I've seen the same question asked numerous times on many forums for many different games, and it's very often spun to express derision.

There are, unfortunately, still many people on forums like this who are frightened of the notion of other people being different, or thinking or acting differently, or wanting to express themselves in different ways than their real-life situation might allow. And there are indeed also people who treat a character creator as an opportunity to just create a character, and don't have any particular motivation behind it except perhaps variety. As I said, people have many reasons.

But many people are made to feel as though they need to rationalise and justify their choice simply because someone else can't handle it. So they'll say things like, "Well, being a normal, red-blooded male, if I'm going to have to look at a character I'd obviously rather it was a woman!" - a way of distancing themselves from the choice they've made and re-establishing their masculine credentials. And I think it's a shame that anyone should be made to feel as though they have to justify simple and relatively inconsequential choices like these beyond, "I wanted to."

Hmm. Interesting comments here:

"Some men would rather watch a girls behind for hours than a guys."

"They are straight guys so why would they want to spend their gaming time looking at a male character? [...] Makes sense to me that a guy is perfectly happy watching the butt of a female character rather than watching the butt of a male character."

"Women are prettier to look at, simple as that."

To me these points distil down to: "I like looking at women's bodies, so I play as a female character to maximise the time I can spend looking at women's bodies".

This is sad, and a bit creepy TBH.

You think women are sexual objects, gotcha!

Makes me imagine a world where guys walk around town carrying inflatable sexdolls the entire time, so whenever they catch a glimpse of their own reflection in a window (eww! a male!), they can whip out the doll, stare at it and rub their thighs, going "urrrr yeeeeaaah look at that urrrr phworr" to block out the sight of their own hideous male form :D

I guess mindless objectification of the female form in gaming is just more acceptable than it is in real life? SAD! :)

Repped. Yeah, this.

To add some more of my own: the OP was not offensive, but there are many (including some who have posted here, which is probably why much of the defensiveness and antaganism comes from rather than from what the OP said) who complain about men playing as women. Almost as if there they expect the entire internet to be one big dating site that they think lots of people using that to try and trick them. Remember people, this is a game, not a dating site :D.

My main account is not Female, but my second is.

You are viewing this through the wrong lenses. It's a problem with two dimensional/higharchical thought structure. Makes for simple arguments but never covers anything meaningfully. Theres a lot more to it than objectifying women and, contrary to popular belief, one can appreciate the phisical form and all the other aspects of a person simultaneously as well as broken up into parts. Denying physical attraction is denying your own biology. You are bringing things into the topic that aren't really there as the primary driver. Also, if you really want to break it down, then it has to be in much longer form than a forum post and who among us has the time for that?
In short, you are "disturbed" because you think it's an expression of sexism. I think there's a lot more to it than that. For example, I think my wife is hot but I also have a great deal of respect for her other qualities, including personality traits and raw inteligence. When I "objectify" her, I am certainly not demeaning her in any way. There are many reasons why a male might choose to go with a female character and very few of those are disturbing. If you want to analyse that aspect of playing as a sign of societal disjunction then you should weigh it against the in game mass murder many of us partake in as well. Do you truly believe that's what most people are fantasising about when they blow up an NPC or another commander?
Sometimes a game is just a game.

I'm just going to call this out and say that this is the sickest thing I've ever read on this forum. Sorry dude. That's just so wrong in so many ways.

The quotes I picked out, and the subject following from the OP, are not about people's nuanced relationships with their wives.

The statements quoted are creepy (IMO) because they're fixating on the sexualisation of women's bodies.

I agree there are many reasons why a male might choose to go with a female character, and most are not at all misogynistic reasons, but my issue is with the subset of those who admit that their sole reason for choosing a female character is to provide them with sexual titillation, which yes I think is a misogynistic attitude.

Please elaborate? I'm genuinely curious at what brought you to your conclusion.

Yeah, I think you're overanalysing it, but I could be wrong.

At least I assume they are guys, with cmdr names like John, James etc.

As one of my acquaintances said it's boring to always look at a dude.

It is overall a pixel character.....in many games you control female avatars or male avatars. I do play a male soldier in BF because i can't choose female soldiers.
Doesn't really bother me if guys using girl characters.
The truth behind is, everyone wants to be dominated by us :p

Are you sure? :D

I don't think it's sick at all. Because he also says: "For example, I think my wife is hot but I also have a great deal of respect for her other qualities, including personality traits and raw inteligence"

What Ozram is describing here is sexual attraction, and not in fact objectification despite what he goes on to say. Objectification means this:

"Sexual objectification is the act of treating a person as an instrument of sexual pleasure. Objectification more broadly means treating a person as a commodity or an object without regard to their personality or dignity. Objectification is most commonly examined at the level of a society, but can also refer to the behavior of individuals"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_objectification

Which I don't believe is what Ozram is describing. Finding people "hot" is not objectifying them, it's a perfectly natural human response. Objectification only starts when one starts to strip them of all their other attributes and treat them as a commodity.

There is a word for gender neutral, its called sexual dysphoria

:D Hehe!

I had heard about hermaphrodites, but i never heard about gender neutral mammals. barbie and kent dolls not included... They are missing some really important parts and without it, they are just man, and woman like but neither...

Now? :D that's gender neutrality.

Thanks for putting it more clearly than I did. Still 5 am here. This chat is my first of the day, with a coffee ;)
