THE FORMIDINE RIFT MYSTERY (Part 4)

Hey Jaiotu, now that Kahina is set wanna help me find Gustav Mastersson and Moira Dolan ?

That sounds interesting, actually. I might be up for that.

--------------------------------

Regarding the "Big Event":

Don't let PAC, or anyone else's, machismo dissuade you from taking part. From the moment this thing was announced we all knew that a PvP bloodbath was "on the horizon". PAC has stated their agenda. Good for them. Whatever. If you thought that you were going to attend this event in Open and not be somebody's target then I doubt you thought this thing through to it's logical conclusion.

The vast majority of players attending this event will not survive 46 Eridani. It's not even clear if Salome and the other fugitives will survive more than five minutes after they enter into "Open Play". It is highly possible that the event will be over almost as soon as it's begun. Does it really matter if the CMDR on the other side of that rail gun is SDC or PAC when they take us down? Not really. Our objective isn't to survive the day. Our objective is to create so much confusion by our sheer numbers that Salome, Corsen, Singh and Nakamura have a chance to escape.

If the guys with the biggest guns spend their time killing us then just maybe their eyes won't be on the primary targets. So what if I get sent home early? I will have done my part with honor.

We have an Oath in the Earth Defense Fleet:
I make this vow before my enemies and my peers.
Though my enemies are many I will stand my ground with honor.
I pledge my life to the protection of Earth and the Federation.
Not for my own glory, ego or for empty profit but for humanity and humanity's children.
I seek neither power nor glory as I dedicate my strength to this great cause.
I am the light in the darkness, the defender of the weak and the enemy of ignorance.
I am Earth's shield and her sword.
For now and all the days to come, I am the Earth Defense Fleet.
We in the EDF have come to believe that Salome's message is critical to knowing what we are up against in defending Earth and the Federation. The discovery of the Zurara and the apparent conspiracy surrounding it's mission makes this clear. We will stand our ground.

Drew has another saying: "Elite combateers always make a difference." Well ... I may be far from Elite as a Combateer ... but I am an Elite explorer. I will strive to make a difference.

Is it wrong of me to wish for the grand arrival of our insect overlords indiscriminately slaughtering everyone tomorrow? Because that's the only way I see this event being anything more than a genital-measuring, salt-harvesting gankfest.

What I wouldn't give to lead a fleet of Majestics into the fray to put an end to this lunacy once and for all. As it stands, I believe I shall take a vacation of sorts. I could finally visit Sol, but Epsilon Eridani is nice this time of year.

I suspect that they'll be a little too busy for chatting :D
That said, I've roleplayed the hell out of this thing up to this point, so Salome knows where to find me if she wants to talk to the Independent Rift Explorers Alliance

CMDR Drew Carnegie
With a space ;)

What will you do to her ??

Devolved into something incredibly stupid? Like a WAR maybe?

Yeah. Kahina finally gets her war. You know she's been itching for one ;)

Yeah but Raan is with her......

Taunt her for her dark hair. The freak.

Well that's prob gonna hurt her most to be fair.

Well Rifters !!! If everyone dies tomorrow you know they will have the information they hold hidden somewhere.

It then becomes Rift goose chase mkii, so brush up on your greek myths, watch your 6, focus on the core and report every shape you see in the stars.

The rifters may have to live on !!

Oh yes! I'm hoping that, a few weeks after Premonition is released and we've had a chance to digest it, that we can start a brand new thread with all new summaries in the OP detailing everything we know so far. Maybe instead of the "Formidine Rift" thread we start a "Zurara Conspiracy" thread? Or something.

No and no. I don't have time for that. Even after two years playing the game, I have so little time ingame that I'm still rorting around in a Viper 4. I do have two Horizons accounts, and multiple computers, so I could - if I could be bothered - have a go at stalking the action, but pixel-based combat doesn't interest me at all. What interests me in this event is to see what happens, not particularly to influence it. But I can do that without risking multiple rebuys by watching someone else's livestream. Which I can do in the pub... I guess PAC's attitude isn't really that important to me, but it has convinced me that there are better ways of spending my time! And if the livestream is boring (which is highly likely, as the chances of the streamer being in the right place at the right time is remote), I can always talk to someone in the pub!

Sounds like a plan. Just don't drink one for each of the fallen. That would be a lot of drinking.

Got into a ship for multi crew to stand with Salome just in time for the captain to guide it right into a star. I'm guessing the instance is busted since I can't do anything.

I actually, at several points, really wanted to play a part in the story here - as a 1984'er, I was addicted to this game, wrote my own "fan-fiction" in those years, and lived/breathed Elite, so the opportunity to play a part in the development of the story of my first game-addiction was of great appeal...

However... the way it's been done has completely turned me away from participating at all. I figured the 29th would be a good event, something to get people into open, play out Salome's story, and the ending would be written, one way or the other. I went off, bought and A-rated an FDL, figured it would be useful, as the 29th would likely be a sharkfest, one way or the other, in one system or the next.

And where are we now... I joined discord, and discovered the whole thing was a little more than a VIP-only activity. Follow our directives... ICourier or iEagle, no weapons, be the cannon fodder or try to interdict (unless you're a PvP god), while those "in charge", in their clique, dictate to everyone else how to participate. Blaze OUR trail... or die. Turn up in a ship with weapons, and if we don't know you, you die, no questions asked. What if Salome's trail leads you to jump into a system with players who aren't participating in the event? You'll kill them too?

When news of this event came out, I was rooting for Salome's survival, then I figured the story would come out anyway, one way or the other, so her survival is immaterial, really.

Same here. I was really looking forward to this: a real story to follow and be a part of. Now ir's just another Galnet article ro peruse over coffee.

Yep, based on the recent announcements, I would say PAC have, regardless of intentions, outright declared themselves as organised gankers.

Honk for ZURARA!!

Anyone with weapons is not trusted, unless part of the inner circle. If not part of inner circle, die.

Anyone not trusted, without weapons, must fly small unarmed ships. They may then interdict any other ships, armed and large or small... and run away or die.

That's what it boils down to, unless you multicrew, and then you can watch someone else die or run away.

I can't see Drew making this into an interesting book finish. The whole PAC (Puppies Are Cute?) plan sounds boring.

I've been here off and on for a week - do I get squatters rights ? :p

Only if you've got a fast armed ship to defend that right!

Or an engineered Orca juggernaught

I'm slacking in New California at the moment. Always nice. If I get shot up in the event, I want back to the heart of the core.

Yep. Not sure what the range is though. Im planning on bringing some. I picked up 2 today, and hope to find time to get another 2 before the event.

You can blame Han-Zen for thinking of it on the canonn thread.

Honk for ZURARA
(and Riz!) :)

Just to say everyone in 46 Eridani this evening has been friendly and chatty - some folk just jumping in and out - but a good half dozen or so of us sitting about having a natter. So no mad dog psycho's as yet :p

You think mad dog psycopaths can't make smalltalk?
I think you should watch the film "Seven Psycopaths"!

Well here we are, the 29th.

I'm an insignificant, independent pilot on good terms with all 3 factions but aligned to no one or any power. I play Elite the way I want to, is that not the whole idea?

I'm about to finish off engineering my i-eagle this morning, 25LY range, 3 MC, engineered enhanced thrusters etc. I have a combat ready FdL, fully armed DBX with 50+LY range and could use a Python, Cobra or ASPX. All I need to do is work out where to base myself....

All the ships are armed, no one tells me how to outfit my fleet though they can ask. :)

Anyone tries to make me change my mind could be in for a hard time. I'll play this how I want to.

As an aside I have been looking at some of the PvP on utube. For all the talk of god like PvP'rs some of the flying is very basic, especially those that joust (boost turn, fa off, line up, fa on, fire PA's / railguns, heatsink, repeat). I'm wondering if they have all got used to doing it their way, forgetting others might have different tactics?

See you out there Rifters (yes, I've been out there) I'll be happy to team up with like minded pilots.

Commanders, please dont be persuaded out of the event :( Something like this doesn't come along very often, so dont miss the opportunity. Show up, wing up, multicrew or run solo, get involved and enjoy the maelstrom!

In all honesty there will probably be more independents showing up then any player group. Even if that isn't the case, who cares what one or another player group decrees? Someone's always trying to tell us independents what to do, how often do we actually listen? ;)

I'm "blazing my own trail" and doing what I like on the day. I don't give a frak if I see any of the outlaws, I am getting up at 3AM on a Sunday to participate in this event because it interests me. I want to go and see, maybe shoot something, maybe get blown up a few times, try and keep up with the pack, maybe be targeted myself - who knows? I just want to go and have fun, playing a video game and following a story I love.

Fly safe o7

I think the plan of UP 'Honking for ZURARA' is a brilliant one. You can join in, armed or no, watch from the sidelines, apply a little judicious interference by bringing everyone in range to a grinding halt for 20 seconds. You might even play a key role in allowing the fugitives to make their destination if you can honk their pursuers. I can imagine UP mine barrages across likely routes with fingers hovering over the ADS button...show the Puppy Crew what Independent Rifters think of them and their ganking plans! [yesnod]

I'll pay money at Fdev store if they make a T-shirt that says "I helped solve Formidine Rift Mystery and all I got was a gankfest and this T-shirt".

I'll pay 5X money at Fdev store if they make a T-shirt that says "I was a groupie and followed Formidine Rift Mystery for years, and all I got was getting ganked by Rifters and this T-shirt".

Hint, FDev, hint.

The phrasing is a bit long. Shorten it to Honk for Zurara and I'd buy one!

And on those notes, another PSA from our friends at PAC Discord announcements:

Honk the lot of 'em!
