Hardware & Technical Computer Build to run Elite Dangerous

I can remember on missions like factions when it got busy there was slowdown. But as you said optimisation of the code hopefully will improve things, the last round certainly did.

But the question I'm interested in is am I running the optimised code already on my "Combat Demo 1.0"?

What confuses me even more is of the talk that "Combat Demo 1.1" improved the performance of "Factions" - http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showpost.php?p=237636&postcount=1020

Confused :S

Hi Guys,

Bit of a newbie to PC gaming. Not really done much gaming since the older Tomb Raider games on PS2 and 3! So a bit unfamiliar with what's needed! Anyway I'm a standard beta backer so I've just got the single player build! :)

I have a Sony Vaio laptop with these specs:

i7 CPU Q740 @1.73GHz
8GB RAM
64 bit
Windows 7 Home Premium
GeForce GT425M

Is that enough info?

I have literally booted the game up for five minutes (as I was at work) and perhaps rather naively assumed I'd got a good spec and I'd be able to run at 1920x1080 as thats the screen res for this laptop. But it was very jerky. I had to lower to get a decent rate.

Is that what you would expect with these specs or have I done something wrong? Will later builds (when I get then) run better?

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Errr... I said I was new to this PC gaming! I've just discovered the quality controls!

Anyway lowering to minimum I managed to get something playable in 1920x1080 in scenarios without the rocks. With the rocks I need to lower the resolution still but getting a reasonable frame rate with that now too.

I feel a little better now, and hopefully with later builds and optimisations I may get something even better!

Greetings all,

With Standard Beta fast approaching I thought it best to upgrade my pc.

I also have a problem - my laptop has seen better days and I need a new one, and I realistically don't have the cash for a new laptop and fancy-pants gaming rig. Therefore, I have decided that compromise is necessesary and will accept a slighty lower quality visual experience for ED while fulfilling my mobility needs (and also keeping in a budget of around £800).

After some poking about I have found some reasonable quality hardware, and would appreciate any knowledgable views of my investigations so far.

This is currently what I'm looking at laptop-wise:

Optimus Series: 15.6" Matte Full HD LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-4710MQ (2.50GHz) 6MB
8GB KINGSTON SODIMM DDR3 1600MHz (1 x 8GB)
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 860M - 2.0GB DDR5, 640 CUDA Cores - DirectX® 11
1TB SEAGATE HYBRID GEN3 SSHD Drive, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE (5400 rpm)

I'd also be interested to know any views on hybrid drives - are they worth the extra cash? Not sure my budget would stretch to an SSD drive.

Many thanks :)

Pre-BETA rig.

Just built my rig, i5 4670K (OC 4.5Ghz backed off to 4.3Ghz all cores), 16Gb (2x8) Vengence 1600Mhz CL9, 256Gb MX100 SSD (OS & primary apps), 2Tb HDD 7200rpm/64Mb, Corsair AX760 fully modular, Evo 212 tower cooler, Corsair 500R case with 3x 120mm intake, 2x 120mm exhaust, 1x200mm side fan & base mounted & filtered PSU, Asus DC2OC GTX760 GPU (anticipate SLi later to go 4Gb VRAM), 3x BenQ 2460HMs 1080p 2ms latency, Zalman keyboard, Anker mouse and on my shopping list is a X52 pro but I just can't decide on stick :/

Well, just got my hands on the single player combat demo and I'm really pleased with how my PC is standing up to it. It's a 4-year-old Shuttle-based system:

AMD Phenom II X4 975, overclocked to 4GHz
8GB DDR2 RAM (somehow this works, even though the motherboard says 4GB max!)
1TB HD 7200RPM
40GB Corsair SSD Cache drive
AFOX ATI Radeon 7850 2GB Single-Slot GPU (case only has room for a single-slot card) overclocked to 930Mhz GPU and 1250Mhz RAM)...

So far, (and I've only got through 4 single-player scenarios yet, my flying skills are awful!), I'm getting a nice 60FPS at 1080p with all settings cranked up, so long as I avoid the very highest anti-aliasing setting - that seems to be stressing the system a little bit (and GPU temperatures got up to 90C, ouch!).

Happy chap though, so now I just need to learn to fly!

Wait till you get to "Factions" :) - http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=25416

I'd love to, if I could survive combat long enough to get there!
I did experiment with trying out Phenom II X6 1100T I acquired as I was thinking that the extra two cores would really help out with ED, but it turned out my PC's ancient BIOS couldn't fathom the newer CPU at all and wouldn't even POST, so went back to the X4 and turned up the clock frequency dial...

If you look at that thread of mine, about half way down you can see my poor CPU running Factions (via my LCD monitor) - http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=25416

It's pretty clear all other levels - even those with thousands of asteroids rolling around - hit the GFX card generally the most. But "Factions" seems to be the exception to this (in the Combat Demo) and the CPU is the bottleneck.

Good thread of yours, thanks. I'll see what it's like when I get there and I may yet play with v-sync settings when it comes to it. Not sure I've got any headroom left for any further overclocking. I need a fair few more hours in the pilot's seat yet though!

;) This is what I'd do:

Core i5 CPU 4670K
8GB 1600MHz RAM
R290 AMD card OR Nvidia GTX780
500W PSU
128MB SSD hard drive for boot and key applications
2TB normal hard drive for data and secondary applications

Punch that lot into the link the other guy sent where you choose they build and see what it costs..

500W PSU would not be enough for certain versions of those cards.

Does anyone else think that a GPU temperature of 93C I hit last night after a good hour's session is starting to be a bit on the "too hot" side? Think I might down-clock the thing a bit...

Yeah, that temp's too hot for comfort. :)

CPU hitting 60° C or GPU hitting 80° C is a sign of inadequate cooling to me.

It is better to improve the cooling, those temps are too high and may cause your GPU to degrade or even to fail.

The CPU temps were stable at 60C.
The PC is a Shuttle, so it's a small case. Only room for 1 single-slot GPU. The Afox 7850 was the fastest GPU I can get into the case. I know AMD cards tend to run hot as it is.

I've just ordered some new thermal compound (Artic Silver 5) and will strip down the Afox cooling system and put some new stuff on just in case it's been badly applied in the factory.

Maybe I should run the PC with the lid off completely? There's not much room in the case, and I don't think I can get any other ventilation or case fans in there.

In the case of the small case running lid off is the best choice. Although the dust might become a problem.

I've also had a thought of taking the Dremel to the case around the area where the Afox card has its vent... Drastic times require drastic measures!

Well I've finally got the Single Player Combat installed, after buggering about getting Windows installed for about 4 hours. I hate Windows so very, very much.

Anyway, the game won't even load. Looks like my GT7300 circa 2004 won't do the job!

Good job my shiny new GTX 760 card turns up tomorrow then, isn't it :)

Will report back to see how it works with my Asus P5K, Q6600 and 6gb 800Mhz ram, circa 2008.

I'd say I'll be upgrading one component per month until the game is released at this rate. Or I might get lucky -we'll see.
