News Elite Dangerous - 2.4 and beyond

Zac does say "Core Gameplay & exciting new features". So I am reading that as-they will keep adding new stuff, but it will take a back seat to core gameplay improvements. Which is the reverse of what we had in seasons 1 & 2.

I hope this is the case. I think the developers have tried very hard to do the reverse, and have it work out. It hasn't. But they have tried very very hard to do that.

The core needs work. The developers know this and I think this is actually a very promising sign. It's a bit of a scary one for Frontier because sexy new stuff sells, bug fixes less so.

But the game needs work. There's a lot that is almost at the point of requiring an overhaul.

I read this today, and I see this as actual hope. In the last few weeks I had simply resigned myself to the realisation that Frontier were probably going to take the sales road more than the core mechanics road and sort of made my piece with it.

This decision won't have been taken lightly and I am now finding myself hopeful about the future again. Which I swore I would just get over and move on. lol. oh well.

Here's to some long overdue improvements. And if the bling is still added (when it probably makes more logistical and logical sense) then what's not to like?

Reading this update made me very happy.

Also to those having a go for the developer having the temerity of placing stability and core mechanics in a bit more of a focus and why are you paying for that - go find a hobby - a constructive one.

People like you are bane of the entire gaming community. No where in that entire statement is payment even implied. Why spout lies like this? There are zero benefits for anyone.

So you think you won't be paying for the major updates next season?

Aren't u cute. :)

It's not really good news if you're part of the macOS community and can't get any answers from FD about the past let alone the future.

They told you a long time ago. Apple will not update thier API to support Compute Shaders which are a requirement for one of the Horizons features. They will not even break even if they have a sperate Horizon track that focuses on avoiding compute shaders for a small percentage of the community. You should be bugging Apple.

Season 3 hasnt been mentioned either. Or if there will even be a season 3. I think, we dont know what the updates are or if they will have any cost. Theorize all you want, it wont get you anywhere. But do remember all the free updates t core mechanics we have now, and the cosmetic store. Frontier have no shortages of revenue between that, the base game and season 2. Thier biggest problem right now is how the community views the game. Charging for updates to the core game peopel are complaining about will only further damage that view. No one is going to be buying a 3rd $45 set of expansions for a game no one plays. So no, they most defiently do not have to charge for the next core game updates as that will likely lose them money. Its not like those updates arent already underway anyways. Do you really think the only things devs work on is the new feature for each update? Its already confirmed many new features are underway, why would core feature updates be underway?

You know, consumers do have the option of simply not paying for something and then not having it? It's a choice m8. Excercise it.

But I'm not going to dogpile the developer for recognising the breakneck speed has certainly lead to some breaking of necks and perhaps a bit of a stability forcus for an update or two wouldn't go amiss.

It's unfathomable why that would even be logical to challenge given the current state. And they simply aren't just going to not add new stuff along the way.

Greetings Commanders,

It’s a very exciting time to be part of the Elite Dangerous galaxy. On June 27 we will welcome even more Commanders to the galaxy with the PlayStation 4 launch. These new players will join the ranks of our already incredibly active, passionate and dedicated community.

Since the launch of Elite Dangerous: The Commanders a number of weeks ago, we’ve received messages from members of the community eagerly awaiting details about the 2.4 update and the future of the game. I’m pleased to be able to share with you a little more detail on what’s to come in the short term and slightly longer term with Elite Dangerous.

2.3.10

The first thing I’d like to share with you is that we will be adding another point update on June 27, this will be for all platforms and will include a number of bug fixes, and stability and networking improvements. This includes the much-requested Anaconda cockpit appearance change and will also introduce greater security for multicrew hosts to be able to disable or limit crew members’ specific activity.

One large element of this point update is a number of “under the hood” fixes which are designed to improve stability and performance, particularly on planet surfaces. This means that we will be looking to run a beta for 2.3.10. However, we do understand that with this being a point update with a number of less visible improvements, it won’t have as many new features to play test. Nonetheless, this testing is very important to make sure the game works as we would expect. Due to the wider and more global nature of this small point update, we will be making the beta open for all and we would welcome your support in joining and spending a few hours playing and helping to ensure the update is as good and stable as it can be.

We’ll have more details on the beta, and exactly how it will work shortly.

2.4 – “????”

Back at EGX in 2015 we showcased the headline features that would be coming to Horizons. However, there’s always been an extra little update, a mystery if you will, that has yet to be revealed.

We’ll be providing a little more information about the update to the community and the press during E3 on June 13th and 14th. We’ll be hosting special community livestreams and activity so stay tuned for more news and updates as we get closer to the date.

I can, however, tell you that this update will be slightly different to previous ones - content will be revealed over time rather than all being available on day one. Additional pieces of exciting content will surface over the coming months as the narrative progresses.

Beyond

So with the Horizon season of expansions coming to a close, what is beyond 2.4 I hear you ask? Well, it certainly isn’t the end of this amazing journey… we’re only just getting started!

Our awesome dev team are dedicated to continuing to build and improve the Elite Dangerous experience with an exciting long term vision in mind. We’re happy to be able to confirm that the next major updates following 2.4 will focus on core gameplay, existing features, quality of life and other improvements! We’re delighted to be investing a considerable amount of development and effort into making the core gameplay experience even better for our fantastic community or players.

We’ll be sharing more news on that content and our roadmap at a very special event coming later in the year - more details on this event will be released in the weeks after E3.

On behalf of the entire Elite Dangerous team, thank you for your continued support. We are very excited to embark on the next part of the journey together as we continue to make Elite Dangerous an even more fantastic game and experience for our incredible community of players.

Thanks for saying SOMETHING, how ever this is so vague as to be nothing of significance. When you're responding to criticism please add in some real value, and don't placate (super boringly) and patronise your playerbase. Dudes listen and grow up a bit please? It's not that DDF anymore, you got rid of them, we are real uninvested people, don't be scared, and tell us honesty what's going on. You're a small developer and you have to communicate better or else.

Wow, this game community is so desperate for any kind of communication from the devs It gets excited about the most patronising non news. Same old.

This is nothing more than hype building for PS4 launch. No substance.

Strap in to your seat and prepare for hype backlash.. Frontier does it to itself.

My eyes rolled so hard I almost passed out... not at this update, which was fine, but because this 'information' was what we already knew. Why people needed it spelt out here is beyond me.

We knew they were working on 2.3.1, the PS4 version and 2.4
We knew there would be something at E3 since it'll be a relaunch for the game, and likely the biggest launch it's had. *
We knew that now they'd ticked off the ambitious feature-list of Horizons, they'd go back to address placeholder content.

The impatience and the sense of entitlement has been simply epic - people haven't even dig up everything from 2.3 yet, but for some reason half the community seemed to think that not having everything spelt out meant doom for the franchise, or that development had stopped, or any other number of dumb assumptions.

* When Elite came to PC it was a niche game known to hard-core space-sim fans, VR enthusiasts and Kickstarter fans. When it came to Xbox it was hidden in a crowd of indie shovelware and (until the NMS blowout) weirdly few US Xbox players seemed to know it existed. On both those platforms the game has built a playerbase over time - but with PS4...
PS4 is the best selling console of the current gen, it's got a massive install base, people are hungry after NMS and the Salome news-storm has raised awareness even more. For FDev this will be like launching the game for the first time, and during E3 they'll have the eyes of Sony's massive playerbase stuck firmly on them. It will decide if Elite floats on as niche indie or breaks out as a mainstream title. IF they're smart, the main thing FDev will be doing is trying to get this right. If there is anything new or flashy to be shown, it will be shown there - likely in the context of a PS4 promotional event.

There was a bug where the cockpit of the Anaconda was different after the 2.3 update. This fix is in 2.3.10 and was often asked about - people love their Anacondas.

Zac, I happen to love my Orca. It has lost the nice glossy center console and instead now has a dull, drab, plastic-y looking blight upon the eyes. Kinda like the Anaconda lost all character with 2.3. Any hope that the conda fix will also restore the Orca to the pre-2.3 splendor? It was the true limo of the stars. Now, it has been dumbed down to the level of the Dolphin and Beluga. Sadness.
