Call me crazy, but I bought a PS 4 Pro just for Elite Dangerous

What would you say is a good minimum size of TV for playing ED?

It really depends on your viewing distance (for any game or viewing TV, for that matter). I prefer to fill my field of vision, so the 55" at the 2.5m viewing distance I have works well. Horizon Zero Dawn is spectacular when set to the "favour resolution" 2160p checkerboard mode.

PS I'm shortsighted, and my eyesight has been bad recently (particularly peripheral vision), due to a tumour that was pressing on the optic nerves. The tumour was removed a couple of weeks ago, with noticeable improvement to my vision (along with a bunch of other stuff). I'm returning home tomorrow, and will be giving my eyes a workout on Horizon Zero Dawn. :)

Really hope the Scorpio brings you guys HOTAS. Would be surprised if it doesn't the XBox firmware is kinda Windows 10 under the hood isn't it?

Indeed. Theoretically it should be capable of supporting any Win10 compatible device.

And more than HOTAS, I'm hoping it eventually allows for some VR support. Microsoft claims that their disinterest in VR support is a question of wanting wireless headsets only.

I'm afraid what will really happen is that MS will continue to lock out VR, and try to push priority for augmented reality instead, which while cool, doesn't help me experience Elite in full VR.

You likely paid less for an entire gaming platform than many PC gamers pay for just their video card. You're not crazy, you're the smart one! The only reason I would call you crazy is if you already had a PS4 standard / Slim to begin with.

Speedy recovery mate.

I switched to gaming on PS4 also. I have really enjoyed the past 3 1/2 years doing so. If you look at graphics in games like Uncharted 4 its a amazing deal. Even more so now that the PS4 gold slim in only $249. The whole console is less than just the Video Card in my PC at $359. I have PSVR at a lower cost than PCVR. I have BestBuy's Gamers Club Unlocked and save 20% on all games!! Its got to the point I have so many games on PS4 and back catalog I no longer have time to play games on my PC.

Enjoy and I hope your eyes are well on the mend.

That's exactly what I did Duck.
But I was upgrading to a 4k TV at same time so thought did it.

The size should be determined by how comfortable to your eyes is it in relationship to the distance from them. Choose a screen size the same way you would choose a seat at a movie theater. Not to close or not to far. You want to be able to take in everything but not be overbearing. Stand in front of the prospected screen the same distance you'll have it set up at home.

I lost my vision in one eye and the 55 inch I was using at the distance became really annoying. My vision loss caused me to have to turn my head to get the whole picture. I went to a tv repair and bought a used 40 inch, using my system. Problem solved.

Not crazy at all. I bought a 65" 4k on black friday last year. Convinced wife and moved old 42" to bedroom. Then the December news came and I told her it would be nice if she could game the same time I do. I would even move my prized Star Wars PS4 to the bedroom for her and put the new one in the living room. I bought a Pro because we all remember that it was December when they said it was coming this year. So no OP, you're not crazy. I may be, but your not.

Money, money, money, must be funny, in a rich man's world. Aha, aha, all the things I could do, if I had a little money... It's a 4K world!

Having very recently splurged on a uhd 55" oled, i am waiting(anticipating) for a post E3 price drop on the pro (and a giant "5" flashing up at the end of Sony's show before the fade to black) ;)

I bought my PS4 mainly for Persona 5 but when I heard ED was coming out to the system, I knew it was worth it

Btw you asked me about HZD, HDR and 4K when my new TV arrived. Amazing, absolutely stunning. Takes the game to a whole new level graphically and I was blown away in 1080p SDR. 4K was a massive step up, and then when I finally got HDR working in conjunction with 4K, wow. just wow. I can just sit there watching the day/night cycle and marvel. :)

I am so hoping the Elite Dangerous can support the PS4 Pro as it will be outstanding.

I think the odds are ever in your favor, where ED already supports very high resolutions on the PC.

You people and your 4Ks and OLEDs and PS4 Pros and HOTAS and pretty day / night cycles, LOL. You turn me green with envy [cry]

What he said :)

4K and HDR make this an experience that has to be seen to be believed. With HZD being written specifically for the PS4, the coding is pretty close to the metal.

If Elite Dangerous is anywhere near this quality, I'll be gob-smacked (my PC is configured as a workstation, so no gamer video card or monitor - quite playable, but with some visual quirks that were annoying).

As the PS4 Elite announcement came soon after the Pro was released, my cynical side says that Frontier were waiting for the Pro to allow support.

Not crazy at all. And you might save money in the long run - you won't be buying any other games for a long time as you sign your life away to Elite Dangerous :)

Hi All,

I am looking forward to join the PS 4 ED community. I am a PC player since premium beta with lifetime expansion pass. Elite is the game series I played extensively since I play computer games on C64, Amiga and PC.

Now I am looking forward to play on the PS4. I bought a PS 4 Pro just for Elite, since my PC is very low end and low budget.

I figured a PS4 Pro is cheaper than a good gaming PC while still giving you decent performance for the money.

I think that in your case the decision, the way you motivate it, to buy a PS 4 is not a sign of craziness at all.
And PS4 has some very cool other games too.

I am a dedicated PC gamer myself.
I am lucky to be able to finance a good gaming PC.
If that where not the case I would have bought a PS4 myself.
I still consider it once in a while, because there are some games I would like to play, but I just can't cope with console controls.

I used to be this way, back when I was a PC gamer. My first experience with a console controller was a friend's Xbox. My friends and I would play split-screen (I miss those days), and the controller drove me nuts. I much preferred the keyboard & mouse.

Eventually I bought a PS3 (my first console), and over time not only have I gotten used to the controller, but I've gotten good with and actually prefer the controller. It may not have the very precise aiming of a mouse, but ironically neither does aiming a real gun in real life ;) I find the the dual stick much more "fluid" for moving and looking than the keyboard / mouse combo. Both sticks are analog, whereas the keyboard is digital (ASDW), so one can argue you have better control with a DS4 than keyboard & mouse.

I'm comparing DS4 with K&M because PS4 has HOTAS support, so no sense arguing DS4 vs HOTAS in reply to your post.

One thing I did to "improve" the DS4 was buy a set of controller caps for the sticks. I use the Tall ones (they clip straight on to the DS4 sticks) to get more travel distance, translating to finer control. It also better fits my large hands.
