You need to fully A Rate the Cutter. Armour it too. This will cost you around a billion credits including the cost of the ship. Get one and fit it out for trading and take part in trading CGs and you'll raise the cash (though granted in my case the CG's last summer that netted hundreds of millions in pay outs helped a lot). Four or five trips will put you comfortably in the top 25% in most cases.
You should also fit it with turrets on the four hardpoints on the upper hull at least, and learn to roll in combat to keep them pointed towards the enemy. Without turrets, small ships will give you a headache. It's a little low on power thanks to the Class 7 distributor, so take a mixture of energy based and kinetic weapons to balance it.
You also need to bear in mind that once your shields are down, any damage you sustain will cost a packet to repair.
You do need to adapt your flying style. Don't fully boost unless you know you have stopping room or are running from something into open space. Doing it in combat will cause you to overshoot your target or splat into an asteroid. Doing it during docking is suicidal. This is big ship, and it handles like one. Be patient and use a light touch on the stick. You can't throw it around the sky like an FDL.
A big downside is the rebuy cost. Mine costs over £32 million in insurance if I prang it, which makes flying in Open impractical and frustrating. (With a job, a wife and a baby IRL that still amounts to several weeks of play for me).
Not much good for smuggling either. You need to be careful when docking (you REALLY need to pay attention to the speed limit!) which makes you vulnerable to scans.
I think it's my second favourite ship. It's a beautiful big beast that can make you plenty of cash, but the Clipper is more fun to fly.
I'm currently raising cash to do up a Corvette. I have basic hull sitting in dock but I want to fit it out as a battleship.
