To Cutter, or not to Cutter... finally reached Duke, do I care?

You need to fully A Rate the Cutter. Armour it too. This will cost you around a billion credits including the cost of the ship. Get one and fit it out for trading and take part in trading CGs and you'll raise the cash (though granted in my case the CG's last summer that netted hundreds of millions in pay outs helped a lot). Four or five trips will put you comfortably in the top 25% in most cases.

You should also fit it with turrets on the four hardpoints on the upper hull at least, and learn to roll in combat to keep them pointed towards the enemy. Without turrets, small ships will give you a headache. It's a little low on power thanks to the Class 7 distributor, so take a mixture of energy based and kinetic weapons to balance it.

You also need to bear in mind that once your shields are down, any damage you sustain will cost a packet to repair.

You do need to adapt your flying style. Don't fully boost unless you know you have stopping room or are running from something into open space. Doing it in combat will cause you to overshoot your target or splat into an asteroid. Doing it during docking is suicidal. This is big ship, and it handles like one. Be patient and use a light touch on the stick. You can't throw it around the sky like an FDL.

A big downside is the rebuy cost. Mine costs over £32 million in insurance if I prang it, which makes flying in Open impractical and frustrating. (With a job, a wife and a baby IRL that still amounts to several weeks of play for me).

Not much good for smuggling either. You need to be careful when docking (you REALLY need to pay attention to the speed limit!) which makes you vulnerable to scans.

I think it's my second favourite ship. It's a beautiful big beast that can make you plenty of cash, but the Clipper is more fun to fly.

I'm currently raising cash to do up a Corvette. I have basic hull sitting in dock but I want to fit it out as a battleship.

A test fly feature would be nice for these cases, right ?
An isolated instanced system with a station and an outpost, perhaps some NPC target dummies to test weapons on.
Just something basic to let you get a feel for it before committing to buy a ship.

Commanders,

Good day to you all, and I hope it has been a wonderful day of space travel.

Riddle me this. I have FINALLY reached Empire rank of Duke. Yippie! It only took forever, minus a day. Now that I have the ability, I am considering purchasing the Imperial Cutter. Firstly, I have to mention that I am absolutely in love with my Anaconda, and still feel it to be the best all around ship for us all, but I am open to enlightenment.

So far, the only things that I like about the Cutter are the fact that: 1. it can haul so much cargo (Weird to be so. Shouldn't that credit go to a transport ship, but alas...) 2. It looks perrrty (sort of), and 3. It has pretty strong shields.

Now, with the grind of Elite in regards to earning credits for purchases and materials for upgrades, I am stuck on whether or not I want to purchase this big bird.

Would any of you that have made the leap care to share your insight? I am having buyers-doubt, and I don't really want that to morph into buyers-remorse.

Thank you,
Confused in Cali

The Cutter can haul a ton of cargo. So whether you're doing missions or just plain trading, the Cutter can make you lots of money. And it's SAFE hauling (barring Open/real players) as your cargo ship can have HUGE shields and outrun anything. I lost track of the number of Elite Anaconda's that interdicted me only to be left in my dust as I boosted away and jumped again.

Just use your Anaconda for combat/multimission. I use both my Anaconda and Corvette for that. I go back and forth as to which one I prefer at any given time.

Just be careful with the Cutter and docking. It drifts. A rated engines are MUCH better than the E and D rated for countering drift. And never, ever boost when approaching a station (unless attempting comedy).

I quite like my Cutter. Sure, my Anaconda gets more use (easier to park at the new Thargoid bases, more maneuverable in a fight), but the Cutter gives a feeling of safety in Open that you can't get from any other ship. Plus, it just feels nice to fly. A bit sluggish vertically, but the cockpit is lovely and that lack of a huge nose out in front is great for visibility.

The shields never run out. Even if they get close I have a 7A SCB, with room for another if I decide to go to a CZ. Plus, it can boost, or even just cruise faster than reverb cascade torps fired by gankers. It's got great firepower, and the fighter will keep NPCs distracted, allowing you to make up for the lack of pitch rate and get them back in your crosshairs. Plus, if all else fails, you can just ram them into oblivion.

As for money to build one, a week at Quince should cover it. If you can buy one, you should do so, IMO.

I own the big three but I hardly fly the Cutter, it's sluggishness puts me off and I'm no cargo hauler, I don't need 700tons cargo space.
I won't ever sell it though because I love it's looks and versatility.
In combat it's a castle and moves like that too, personally I think it's a boring ship to fly.

I prefer the Conda or even more a 192ton Python over the Cutter as multipurpose ship.
For combat FDL, FGS and my Corvette.

Cutter is beautiful but not as practical unless you need 700tons cargo space.

Just my opinion though.

Fast ship and large cargo capacity are my goals here.
Never flown a Imperial or Fed ranked lock ship so I figure I may as well come out big - depending how the rank grind goes of course.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
7 days. A chore but doable. I have tried before (both Fed and Imperial) but soon gave up in disgust.
Got a good spot now though!
Thanks for the info Cmdr!

I've tried my hand at grinding out rank every so often, too. I always tire of it before too long and go do something else. :)

One of these days I'll get there. I'm at Count right now. heh heh.

If you want to make money from trading/mining then get one. If however you want a combat orientated ship the the 'vette is your ship. The Cutter is capable at all things but trading is the cutters strong point. Interior is the best in the game and exterior is the top of many peoples lists.

My G5 a rated Cutter is mothballed as the handling is borderline painful, it really is that bad which is a shame as the ship is a masterpiece and would be my daily drive were it not for the slooooooow turn rate....not to mention the drifting.

Cutter is good for just about anything. And don't listen to the people who say it's bad for combat. Those are the people who spend too much time in a Corvette to even try flying other ships. You'd be surprised how well it is in a fight, given you know how to fly it, unlike most people.

Just go ahead and buy one.
If you don't like it, you can always sell it back for 90% of its initial price, so there is nothing much to lose anyway.

Yep, try it out and see for yourself.

Sorry, I just couldn't resist! :D

I have about 2,000 hours in the Anaconda; have been playing since v1.1, and have heavily modified both the Cutter and Corvette to G5 in the beta's (sometimes lasting weeks at a time) and have also done that with every other ship in the game because I could.

Having said that, there's a reason I've played this long and never once tried to get my rank up for either of them after the betas. To me, neither are "daily drivers". The anaconda is the perfect mix between the two. The absolute only reason I'd get the Cutter is, as you said, cargo. And considering I don't even trade anymore I've never really thought about it. Sure it's fast and can mass lock, but it sucks SO BAD at turning compared to an Anaconda with G3 dirty drives.

The massive shields of the cutter are a necessity because the time it takes you to turn and center shots (unless you're an NPC) you'll be taking it hard for the the duration of the turn, and when I see a cutter start to turn/flip I know I'll have to boost in about 13 seconds to stay out of their line of sight and then it's rinse and repeat. Like fighting a T9 while in a cobra/viper.

I've spent a ton of hours and hauled a lot of fish to come to the conclusion that I don't ever want either and will happily just use them each beta to remind myself why. If you truly love your Anaconda you will probably hate the Cutter; that being said it'd sure be waste of all those mode-switches to rank up if you didn't :) ... that's just my opinion.

I've had two Anacondas and I currently have a Cutter.

My Cutter is engineered to be a CZ turret boat that my NPC pilot flies, whilst I zip around in the SLF.

In PVE they are invincible, but the damage is pretty poor.

Conda has far better DPS because it can pitch faster and have more time on target, but its shields are far weaker.

I'm now going to grind out a Corvette and if I prefer it, I might sell my Cutter.

Yessir.
I got a great grinding spot - can't imagine better - and so far, throwing a lot into Donation missions and 6 hours of play, I am happy enough with my progress though I started at 0% and the first couple of ranks are easy enough.
But yea...if I ride this out all the way to a Cutter (or even a Clipper!) the first time trying I will be surprised.

I like the cutter.

Great shields, great cargo, great speed, redefines the word drift.

Conda is a better daily though I would say, but me personally I wouldn't use the conda as a daily as I prefer the small/med ships day to day. I only use my conda for long distance science and carrying modules around to engineers from other ships.

I mostly only use the cutter for hauling CGs.

Day to day I use cobra mk3, asp, clipper.
