is there a nuclear war on the elite timeline? I thought it was just a normal ww3 not all out nukes
Can't remember. Thought it was, but I may be wrong.

I read the timeline from start to finish the other day as I was looking for thargoid info and I remember a bit on ww3 but no nukes. maybe they where like the world today (only use a nuke if someone else does) and didn't use any for fear of ruining earth. if so, I don't think we will be getting to land on earth any time soon
There is no ten-year plan and there never was any such claim. David said he's not interested in making an Elite Dangerous 2 and instead wants to keep improving ED as long as there is financial support for it, even in ten years' time.
People took it to mean there is a ten-year plan, when really it was just his way of saying that, with the huge scope of ED, it would stay in development for as long as needed and feasible.
I would assume they'd make the Earth unrecognisably ravaged by war and climate change to stop people moaning that they can't land at Cricklewood Broadway and go to their favourite Kebab shop.
Much has been made off atmospheric landings. And to an extent, some planets with atmosphere will have little practical difference to the lifeless worlds we have now. They'll rocky an icy bodies with thin atmospheres.
But for life bearing worlds, if you can go to cities on, say, earth, and not see people the community will freak right the out. With this in mind, anyone hoping for the ability to land on any planet, look for at minimum space legs first. Because they'll need good 3d models with good animations to populate the worlds with. Minimum.
We might get lifeless worlds with weather patterns in the meantime, but life bearing worlds are unlikely.

ELW and such are many, many, many years away, if they ever come. Atmo is interesting due to changes in planetary surface generatiob, flight model, lightning and such. If you expect huge cities with people walking around: dont hold your breath.
Not likely to happen soon I agree, but take a look at the crowd generation/implementation in Planet Coaster. It's amazing, and it's done in the Cobra engine. Couple that with the first person work FD did with the Outsider and I have high hopes for populated worlds AND space legs.

I've no idea. I'm not writing it, but just off the top of my head, why not the same as we have now. Bounty hunting (individuals rather than ships), on foot and in ground vehicles. Smuggling, illicit substances in and out of cities/states. Mining (with a pick and shovelAnd which game play would it offer? ....
rather than landing on earth you should take a shuttle down so you can't roam too far
.Take a look at some of FD's other products. They can model large groups of people pretty well.
.
Yea. In a few years we'll land on Earth in ED and find that it is covered by coaster parks...
.
More seriously, i would expect Earth to probably remain the one location where we won't ever land. A seeded procedure almost certainly won't deliver a satisfying result and manually re-creating Earth would require way too much work to justify the result.
.
For any other planet out there, well made procedural created content can go a long way. At the same time i think it's still some time (years)off, as populated planets need a vast library of assets to use, if you don't want to fall into the NMS trap. [Unless of course somebody at FD already is working on plants, buildings and animals of all kinds since years. ]

Just me theory-crafting you understand.![]()
Possible order of coding:
1. Volcanism,no atmosphere
2. Lifeless, thin atmosphere hence no weather,no water
3. Atmosphere(various levels of weather,gradually),water
4. Simple life(maybe only vegetation)
5. Animals
6. Complex life
Earth itself will never happen as there will be too many complainants(as mentioned in previous posts)
