Do we have a ETA on the cure for the beige plague?

Hi guys,

Sorry to hear that you're irked by this. It's something that has previously been discussed previously, but I'd like to just reiterate the points.

The development team are aware of the issue of course, as it's been mentioned many times in the past on the forums, reddit, and even livestream Q&As. The issue is a complex one that - from what I understand discussing with the development team - was initially intended to improve the game's performance. The dev/art team have been looking into solutions for it and will continue to investigate it further going forward. We cannot provide an ETA, but unfortunately it will not be in the short-term.

Thanks Dale! Part 3 probably then?

And I second Optimal in being very interested in a live stream about the Stellar Forge.

Said forum theme has already existed for a couple years now. ;)

You guys are like busses! ;)

What he really means: We toned it down for X-Box and PS/4-Reasons, and who cares about the PC-Guys.

What about reverting it to its original stand? The performance was not bad.

There's been a livestream in the past (during the pre-Horizons build-up) regarding terrain generation on the planets' surfaces and the tech/science that goes into that. It's noted! Maybe it's something we can look to feature in the future, but that's a different discussion :)

I'm glad that you guys have FINALLY responded. Would have been nice to see it on page 1 instead of page 101, but at least the community has some information.

As to the other sources of info on this you mentioned. All news to me, and I am sure most of the folks participating in this thread. Anything older than a couple of months isn't really a viable source of info on this game due to how much has changed, so a pre-Horizons reference is hardly something any of us would have considered viable on the current issues.

Never the less...I'm glad to see Frontier finally making their presence known in this thread. With all the talk of expanded community involvement, it all looks like lip service when threads like this are allowed to grow to this size without any input from you guys.

Hope this is the last time this happens. Seriously!

Cheers. :)

Well, that didn't take long.

Bring out everyone's favorite STRAWMAN!

This has NOTHING to do with the consoles. And the texture rendering before the beige issues did have issues. My top of the line CPU/GPU most definitely didn't like it.

Thanks Dale, an actual FDev post in this thread!!!! I hope you realize just how welcome it is to have you communicate something to us, it is most welcome.

I know personally I find myself confused to the actual state of progress or work that Frontier has done regarding the beige issue that began over 10 months ago with 2.2. Six months ago we heard this from Michael:

We're currently working on a more flexible material system, and this will necessitate a fresh balance pass on these. That's not going to be in 2.3 though.

Michael made it sound like Frontier was actively working on a solution, and that sounded very promising indeed! But then we didn't hear anything more on it for half a year, until Brett posted this:

Brett C said:
It's a known issue, and it's in the hands of QA / Engineering to work on. I've nothing more to state on that particular issue.

Brett's post was confusing, I really couldn't tell if any work had yet started on the fix, or if it was done and being tested internally?

But then Mitch posted this a few days ago in a thread that I made on the bug report forums:

I've chesed this up with the Art team and they're already aware of this and working on improving the appearance of planets.

So Mitch's post makes it again sound like a solution is actively under development, which is again wonderful! But now Dale, and sorry I don't mean to pick on you, but your post was worded like this regarding the update:

The dev/art team have been looking into solutions for it and will continue to investigate it further going forward.

That sounds like a fix might still be in the theoretical/brainstorming phase and not actively under development then? So more like what Brett's post implied, and less of what Michael's and Mitch's stated?

This vagueness, or lack of clarity in information, is a large reason why I remain confused as to the status of the beige cure. I can only speak for myself when I say that I'm not looking for Frontier to drop everything to fix this and I understand that development details can't always be elaborated on, but I would like to know what exactly the status of the solution is. That might sound presumptuous, but to me, and I think to a lot of people, this is a very serious and game impacting issue and I'd just like to have a bit more clarity on the matter and less ambiguity.

Again Dale, I appreciate the update, I mean truly I do, probably more than this post of mine conveys, but it's honestly left me once again confused as to what Frontier is or is not working on regarding this. I am very glad to hear that it's still a matter they consider important enough to spend effort improving, and I understand that an ETA isn't likely, but is a fix actually in development, or only planned to be started down the road some day? Are we talking possibly 2.4 or 3.0, or more like a year or two from now? I apologize if this question being repeated again sounds nagging, but any clarity on this would be appreciated, and thanks again.

Personally...I have thrown up my hands on this, and will not expect to see any resolution to this problem, likely for as long as I continue to play the game. :(

Most fixes for issues like these in complex games like these are 95% brainstorming and coming up with idea and 5% of actual implementation. Trust these devs, they know what they're doing.

As for performance - people tend to gravitate towards 'screw you got me' attitude. You have no idea on what kind of machines people play ED. It helps a lot. As long as colours are back when gas giants are added I really don't mind less.

For people bringing this up again and again as example that FD doesn't care, ED sucks, etc - please, leave. Have fun elsewhere.

edit: as for actual fix being hard that it most likely will require to be part of rework coming for next expansion which is at least year away - that's sad, but that's life.
