Well, me and my friend will be giving SC another go tonight - if anyone is interested - from 7pm CST.

So many posts since last night. Glad to see everyone back to their normal semi-respectful but healthily confrontational selves. ;)

Asp, I would definitely take you up on that if there was a free-fly event. I'm still too sceptical to buy in. Again, if a free-fly event comes up (unlikely now I suppose), please let everyone know.

Oh I definitely won't be buying in until it's confirmed the game runs at acceptable fps and that there's some minimum level of gameplay/fun. And it's certainly not the money, it's the principle. If they hadn't lied so many times, I might be more inclined to buy sight unseen. But there's no chance of that based upon their track record.

When was doom 3 BFG released 2012 ish. Did they plan for VR then?

Yeah, they did. Carmack worked on VR code for it and it was the early Oculus prototype demo at trade shows in 2012. The Zenimax/Oculus fight put an end to official support, but the VR mod for BFG relies on a lot of the Carmack VR code that was in there.

Helluva experience with the mod. The pace of the game works extremely well in VR and it's massively satisfying using the Touch controllers for weapons/flashlight.

The difference with Star Citizen is that Carmack actually cares about VR and Chris Roberts is a glib liar willing to say anything for money.

It must be coming up to Gamescom and Citizencom... we have visitations :D

They're so cute at this stage! The light that CR stole from their eyes last year making a hopeful glimmering. But the wise amongst us know that won't last. There's even a TV show made on the idea. "All this has happened before and will happen again" [yesnod]

Name me one startup that didn't have a product developed, just one.

Theranos...oh wait.

Well, well. The last few pages of comments have been an eye opener...

Someone comes on here and mentions he had a good time plying in the Baby PU and the true toxicity comes right out of the woodwork in this supposed neutral forum section. Disappointing, to say the least.

And you dare to accuse the SC community of being toxic? Double standards abound right there.

Forum communities and raging loonies in both cases aside, online in the baby PU I've had some cracking nights of gameplay with more than a few friendly folks just the same as Bob and Calrisian had...same as I have on E-D. Some of the gameplay was captured by a YouTube streamer...with myself and others taking part, if I can get hold of it I'll post it up.

The assumption that everyone who posts up that they've had a good experience playing in the PU doesn't mean we're all lying just to annoy you lot in here because you reckon the game is shyte...the sheer arrogance of that attitude astounds.

Onto the video...the streamer was a complete tool, a neckbearded child with ADHD would best describe him since he spent the entire period ignoring the chat, saluting and dancing...if he'd been in voice chat, I'd simply have shot him outright.

We all had a good time in our little group of 6...with others attacking or just joining in the play in ships etc. A good night on the baby PU...as shyte and laggy as it is. Is it buggy? yes...but no more annoying than any game with bugs (considering it's an alpha) Quantum drive lag in multiplayer is terrible but apart from all of the known and well reported bugs, clipping errors and lag, it's playable and the folks I've met so far are friendly and helpful. The baby PU is boring and once you've completed the few missions there is on offer, there's not much to do apart from make friends and invent your own gameplay...and mostly...we do [yesnod]

Most of the streamers vid was him being a complete eejit and shooting folks in the back... then he accidentally met up with us at the security post. In case the vid starts at the beginning...skip to 3hrs.36 or so...

Okay, so I skipped to about 3.16 then up to 3.36. And this is a summary of the things I saw, a lift, a man in his pants running about, the bloke in the video saying he couldn't get his gun out for some reason, glitching, several blokes walking about slowly and then one of them salutes.

Edit: Forgot then I skipped on a bit more and he was dancing. I gave up at that point.

Need to be fair goes both ways- Spinning sidewinder of doom was fixed in 4 months tops. Beta is beta yadda yadda.

Need to be fair goes both ways-

i agree..... when ED was in beta i never once moaned about bugs (submitted a few however)....... once a game is like and out in the wild however, that is when major bugs which last for months on end become an issue for me... of which ED has some, but for the most part its not too bad. (but then i have not lost a 200mil credit ship and elite npc pilot to a bugged out skimmer yet ;) )

Okay, I watched the vid from 3h19 through to about 3h40. The first bit was the streamer "supercruising" back and forth from a station to an asteroid field and back repeatedly, which didn't show anything other than the pronounced turret-ing effect of the flight model :/
I will admit that the concept of get out of your ship and do stuff is appealing. What I saw was no more interesting than playing a space game for a bit, then docking, logging off and booting up an old Quake Emulator with slightly updated graphics.

I've played PvE MMO since Everquest, so maybe this is my bias. All I see in SC is PvP opportunities. There doesn't seem to be much "reason / motivation / drive" to do anything other than find another player and shoot them?

I expect this is because the game is in very early stages of development and is only really showing movement / locomotion mechanics now, without any regard to compelling gameplay?

my hope is (it better blooming had be) that this is just because they are getting the ground work sorted, net code and what not.

given i could not be less interested in PvP in space games like this as i am banking on it infact..... that said.... i backed SC largely due to their interest in VR at the time and the promise of the PvP slider in all but unpoliced space.... neither of which worked out well for me.

The streamers vid showed his perspective of the game...ignoring the chat and being a mostly. I wish I had recorded what the rest of us were doing as he was wandering around bumping into walls on a ship. Boring is what it was, how he got enjoyment of being a tool in a live stream.

All I would suggest is that some of us who play or have played in the baby PU ...for what it is at the moment...had a decent time doing so and mostly ignore the agendas and wailing of forum warriors on both sides of the grand spectacle to do so. The baby PU is merely a PvP oriented combat section of an alpha release product. None of us playing it pretend it's anything else, but it can be good fun. I don't care what fancy tech demos CiG show me, they mean absolutely nothing until I'm playing what's shown in the vids....but I do use them as a tool to judge if it might be worth playing or not...and at the moment, it seems so. Time will tell.

Once 3.0 releases...assuming it does in some form or other, maybe it'll be better, maybe it'll be as shyte as the baby PU is right now, maybe not. Like all the rest of us on here, I'll wait and see giving it a fair chance and ignoring the political ramblings of the forumites along the way... just like I did with E-D.

Indeed what I find weird/disappointing really is it was 100% FPS and pretty standard at that. Though there is saluting and dancing.

Is there any spaceship combat in the stream?

I suppose that makes sense, using it as a method to test the netcode until it can handle the numbers they want (if that is possible is a different discussion).

Edit: Ultimately it feels very far from complete.

Not 3 minutes 16...3 hours and 40 or so. The rest is that particular neckbeard being a tool.
