Bernal sphere stations

The docking bay is not the entire construction though.

I do feel sorry for the inhabitants of the coriolis-type starports - the ends of the hallways, and possibly the bases of the walls in their living quarters, must stink of vomit. The right angles mean that apparent gravity and apparent horizon only meet at one point on each level - the centre of the corridor. There must be puddles of vomit at each end.

Doesn't matter - even in the individual structures, there is a significant enough discrepancy between apparent direction of gravity and apparent horizon to fill the buildings with chunder. At some points, the difference is 45°!

Could you imagine the CG for that? I don't think we'd complete that in a week. ;)

Honestly, having a "Mega Project" CG would be kinda swell. Some very long term CG (like months long) to build something immense, with assets showing it under construction in game. And as each tier is met a little bit of it gets finished every time. Players can contribute goods at their own pace and instead of receiving one large sum at the end they instead get paid normally for every trade, but a tad more than market prices.

Could be a fun and interesting community project!

Love this idea. Something that could be added to over years just because of how epic it would be when it does finally get finished, probably hit the gaming news pages too if it's done right. Make it unique, one in the galaxy, hand crafted, maybe a massive neutral hub not interested by the Federation/Alliance/Empire or powerplay figures. Something truly awesome maybe pilots federation controlled...

Personally I would love something like the asteroid defence ring from Starship troopers. Make it so big there are multiple docking areas around the "ring".

It's obviously a massive trade hub for both traders, smugglers and miners alike.
It could maybe sell exploration data for the nearest 100ly when docked instead of 20ly that other stations get.
It'd be great for the racers too that could weave in and out of the structure... Yes I'm thinking of starship troopers again.
Probably also a bunch of other stuff (shenanigans) would go on too like SRVs trying to get there and suchlike.

It'd be an awesome focal point for the later Thargoid war where cmdrs could rally to try and hold/repel the bugs.... Maybe I really do have starship troopers on the mind... Come'on you Apes, you wanna live forever?

I always hoped this is the reason that Earths moon is permit locked in Elite but it was always a fools hope ;)

Anyway, just my 2 beans :)

I knew the first response would refer the 'dyson sphere'. Elite needs these. Imagine a station so big you could fly into it and see the star at the centre.

Do want.

I'm afraid that's beyond the technology level of even the 34th century. In fact, if you can build something like that, then you're probably tens or even hundreds of thousands of years more advanced.

I thought the consensus was that a civilization capable of building a Dyson sphere would be far beyond needing to build one.

Anyway, where are the Dodec stations?

another thing could be adding the alpha station of Valérian. I guess Jean-Claude Mézières would be thrilled to see that (and 3d model should already exist from the film ... :)

Ignoring physical feasibility a dyson sphere or swarm would only make sense if there's no way to do interstellar travel and the civilization inhabiting that system needed a way to power their ever growing population demands. In a universe where you can just pop at the system next door and terraform a new world every couple of years pretty much indefinitely the idea goes to bed and never wakes up.

"their ever growing population demands"

Without very strict population control, exponential growth will overtake the resources even of a Dyson sphere probably before it even is finished. Take a good look at that old chessboard problem.

At the rate new players are acquiring Cutters we'll have a fleet capable of moving yottatons of unobtanium in no time at all!

But would they be beyond wanting to have one?

Dyson Sphere
Niven Ring
Banks Orbital (Halo Ring)
Tsiolkovsky Orbital Tether

These are all things I'd like to see in this game.

As an aside, I hope everybody on here has at least read Niven's Ringworld and Banks' Excession!.

The thought behind it is that advanced technology adoption increases energy demands. Of course, it could be argued that it ignores technology's ability to reduce energy costs or stabilisation of the size of the population. Anyway, the game has mini suns in every ship already > it's possible to get fusion power without covering the sun in solar panels > the chances a civilization capable of covering up a star not being able to develop fusion power are not great.

If ever humanity needs a Dyson sphere to get power we'll have run all other resources dry eons before.
