Star Citizen Thread v6

Since I'm contemplating finally buying into the SC game world in a small way. I'll also give rep for constructive suggestions on what ship package might be best and why. I'll probably buy in with a package which entitles me to SQ42 if/when I do.

Thanks

This would be a waste of your time and money. It's not worth it even with the cheapest package. What currently exists of SC is not even slightly finished, and they're way behind on the latest update. As for SQ42, they just the other week admitted that they've gotten very little done on it and it's way, way off being released in any sort of complete form.

What your money currently buys is a crappy FPS that nobody plays, ship deathmatch that nobody plays, and an incredibly glitchy "open world" that consists of a couple of space stations and a couple of dull missions in an incomplete star system.

This was the conclusion I've come to in the past. Since I'm eternally for any good space game experience, I was hoping it might have changed by now. Too bad! I'll just continue to play Elite Dangerous (will never completely stop unless Frontier does) and others.

One of these days, another space game is really going to compete with Frontier on most all levels. If haven't seen one that does yet, but it will come one day.

+Rep for the very nice summary!

You guys were so quick to respond that you caught me while editing. Here's my second question:

I would wait for a free fly weekend and try that. Might save you from making a mistake.

I had been hanging on under the assumption that 3.0 would deliver everything that was shown in the 2016 Gamescom live demo plus a years worth of progress. What attendees got to play was a stepbackwards in many ways, nothing more than a "level" with some deathmatch emergent gameplay. The livedemo offered a little more but is most likely not what we will get when 3.0 is finally released.

All in all quite disappointing. There aren't enough space games out there, "best" or otherwise, and this one looks as far away as it ever was, perhaps moreso as more features are piled on and unrealistic expectations are made.

A good idea. Just for fun I might make up a completely random, unique email address to register an account with and see how long it takes spam to start arriving.

Awesome idea!!! +rep

Feel free to PM me if you see the free fly happen!

Definately this... wait for a free fly trial, don't sink money into it until you see what it is. Just be prepared for like 70Gb download or something (I don't know exactly how large the full install is nowadays). Oh and hope you have a SSD to install it on ^_^

I've lost patience with it. Dev time way too long. Massive scope creep and lack of focus. I'm gutted as was so excited at the start.

Indeed. I was excited when the kickstarter was announced and pledged at that time! Then it went feature creep crazy. I must admit, I did vote to keep adding features, but I did not expect them to be so slow in even getting the core features. Their problem is, and will always be they keep adding useless fluff.

Have you read that? Unless I am reading this wrong, they are actually spinning this as a chance to make a few sales ahead of the 1st. Have they no shame? Please tell me I've read this unfairly/wrongly.

"Before this happens, in an effort to help our Australian citizens and as we have done previously when the EU implemented VAT, we are offering several of our most wanted ships prior to this change."

My interpretation is "The big bad AUS government are forcing us to up our prices for you guys by 10%. Oh noes. But wait! Here's a code you can use so you can buy more stuff at the original rate. Aren't we nice to you guys!?."

They even put the "missing out" in quotes..

I know right! :D They are shameless in squeezing money out of their backers any way they can.

It's somewhat worse than that.

Basically Australians get pretty much shafted on any digital goods

Companies selling non-physical products which are not subject to the rent and labour of a traditional retail outlet have been particularly criticised.[4] Some prices differences can be as much as 88%.[5]

A computer game in the US for 60$ is closer to 90$ down under.

Or in the case in the link, it was cheaper to fly to the US, purchase Adobe Systems Creative Suit 6 and fly back than buying it locally.

I understand the feeling. I've seen this before so I just step back, like I have the last few months, and peek in every once in a while. I'm hoping that that they are learning from their mistakes and will succeed in the end eventually ... in my lifetime.

I would have had huge respect for them if they had instead asked for proof of Australian citizenship and then offered a coupon that would offer a permanent 10% discount on any ship purchases as long as that tax was in place, for that account only. They wouldn't really be losing money as I'm sure people would take them up on this offer and would have earned a great deal of good will in to the bargain.

Hearing this I feel for Ausies and think it's a really stupid move for RSI to get in the middle of it.

I'm more concerned with if the game will ever be GA ... or just enjoyably playable ... though.

More than worrying for this particular game, I'm worrying about the future of space games in general if this game fails!!!!!!!!

Genuinely zero progress.

3.0 demo at gamescon appeared to be just a single planet with no way to leave or visit others, October release date.

Buy the absolute minimum package to reduce sunk cost fallacy - or just wait and see what happens which is even better advice. Current expected release according to the fans is 2022
Would anyone have backed that thing with an estimation date of 2022 in October 2012 on Kickstarter?

No.

Also (offtopic) why every time I quote and start typing a reply, does the text start coming in backwards? I have to delete everything up to the /quote end and then retype... weird. Anyone else get this?
