The planets looked better before The Age Of Beige, there's no denying. But to say they look cartoonish or like a child's drawing...? Maybe my old eyes are shot because to me they still look great, albeit with less colour variety than before. That it's taking so long to resolve this is a bit annoying, but a glacial pace of change is something we've had to accept with FD and ranting at them in the forum is a tried and tested way to achieve sod all except the summoning of a horde of memes.

Still, I'm curious to know what the mysterious "it" is that the OP thinks will befall FD if they don't adhere to his change plan. Maybe he's going to sic Pennywise on them.

I prefer the original. The new one is a try-hard. The fact that the original was just a bloke dressed as a clown... Much more menacing.

"I have coloured planets down here."

Look at the image I posted - good luck findig something like that pre 2.2. Ice worlds, rocky ice world and rocky worlds look much better. And don't get me started on the details, like textures and performance.

The thing is, 2.2 beta was all about rave reviews of planetary improvements. Then someone started the beige-hysteria and now it is THE thing, proper hyperbolic stuff.
Yes, there is a problem with HMC coloration, but it is only one aspect and doesn't make romantic memories of pre-2.2 better - to me at least.

Ok, how about the ice worlds. Do you know what it takes to make perfectly clear ice? It isn't an easy process. Ice gets cloudy due to things like impurities and scratches, and space has abundant sources for both. Dust, impacts, and what-have-you.

Here is europa, an icy moon in our own solar system:

Europa-moon.jpg

Doesn't look very transparent to me.

And I have already addressed the metal worlds in a previous post.

And beige is being worked on.

There is all 3 of your complaints. What you want for ice and metal worlds makes almost no sense, and beige is in the works.

But to say they look cartoonish or like a child's drawing...?

Maybe the Star Citizeners are a bit spoiled. Seriously, try to engage them on some of the Facebook groups & Instagram threads and invite them to Elite. The look of our planets (in comparison to theirs) would be one of the first three they would mention.

I'll explain: you are a person with zero authority or power in this matter, yet make threatening demands in public. That is hilarious. You then go on to call another member here 'boy', as if that makes you look all Big and Grown Up. Its difficult to take a person serious when they behave so silly.

true that

You explore in a Fer De Pants? :O

+1 for that

Splendid exploration ship. :)

Dunno, seen some SC places with shard-like rocks floating above a station, did seem quite cartoonish to me. And probably there are a bit less science in a largely hand crafted world, than in Elite's.

Boi? kinda flattering. I really couldn't give a toss what you say. All of you. The point being is that I have been behind Braben for many years. I hated what happened with Bell. But that's my thing. For the love of god dave would you please turn this into an exploration game? A proper one? You are sitting on sooooooo much money. You still. To this day they don't understand something. I know exactly where the Pleiades nebula is in my head. I know exactly where those pesky asteroids are in relation to them. To the second. I know every cluster out to the Formidine and back... I named them.

The third image reminds me of NMS, so no thanks. :D I agree with the OP tbh. I would prefer a tad more colour than we have at the mo. However, I presume that FD are trying to get everything in place before improving this side of the game ... but it can't come soon enough IMO. :)

Gotta side with the others here. I agree what you point out needs fixing but to say it's the biggest issue, the game will die, claim things are easy, assume everyone supports you, claim you've answered all the counter points, assuming you are more worthy than others and come across as you have I honestly hope those fixes get bumped down the list. Hit so many cliches in this thread I'm trying to think of some that are missing but drawing a blank.

Also my personal pet hate: If you post on the forums you are asking for opinions, you cannot then state: "I don't give a toss what you say". Speaking of, if thats the attitude I guess I no longer value what you say either, goodbye :)

The OP makes several good points, but I'm sorry dude people just won't take you seriously when you write your commentary and suggestions down in the tone that you have; and let's be fair it will take a LOT more effort to get any kind of response from the Devs after this - ergo you begin the thread putting yourself at a huge and massive disadvantage, and cannot really be surprised when people are argumentative back at you!

Certainly my first instinct was to come up with a new comment that took the mickey out of you - such as "I wonder of the OP is really a kickstarter or not, or if this is because the OP feels like they have helped to line Braben's pockets, and have not had their initial 'requests' for game-features taken on board - some major salt and anger now hits, because Braben is richer than he was, and the OP actually contributed to the swelling of his bank balance?"

Subsequent to that, one could argue that the OP is extremely bitter, as he felt like his investment initially would reward him with a game that someone else took the time and effort to design etc., built in the OP's 'image' with his design and feature requests?

Now, OP, please take note that the critique I have offered in the previous two paragraphs, is not at all what my post is about - I am merely demonstrating how unbelievably easy it is for anyone here on the forums to reply to the tone of your post in a dismantling, argumentative, and quite honestly a funny manner! My reason for commenting, is to try and explain that if you want to be taken seriously, then please don't come on here and start thread sin this tone and fashion, it is a waste of your's and everone else's time and efforts, despite that humour that many many other forum users glean from reading the thread and its replies anyway!

I do not disagree with the points you made in beginning the thread OP, but I cannot take you seriously, as I already know that you will 'throw a paddy' at almost any reply you get in the thread, as you are still in the same frame of mind that you were when starting the thread [one could say 'the same mood']. I am pretty sure you will have said 'paddy' at this post of mine, despite me trying to actually help you out.

Because you make points that are good, I would suggest taking the time to write a new thread about the same subject, but without any of the arumentative stuff, and with zero attitude. You could also consider putting it in the other part of the forum that the Devs actually do go and read [so we are led to believe?!], although I can also understand you writing it here, as you get a much better standard of feedback from the community who at the end of the day are a very unusual and creditable forum community, which is very rare in this kind of circumstance. You wouldn't get any of the conflict in return to your new post, and if any, it would probably just be easy to let it self-destruct as many of those kind of comments often do!

I can't tell you what to do pal, nor would I think I could, as you are a fellow community member and have equal say/value when it comes to the forum. However, this is my opinion, and I hope you can take some of it on board. This thread will continue to grow and develop more conflict and humour however, and I just hope you don't blow a gasket over it in the end, as I don't want any players to leave the game in a rage-quit manner, especially those who have been supporting the game since the very beginning :)

Cheers OP, and take the time to reconsider, or all you will get here is grief. I hope this reply is of some use to you, and again please don't presume I am being a spaz just because I have left some negative critique in this post!

The Hat :)

PS: To anyone t hat knows me relatively well on the forums, I apologise for this post being one of my 'longer' ones, although be grateful that it is not one of my walls of text, as I was very well prepared to write one of those lol!! Cheers all, The Hat :)

EDIT:
PPS:-
Just read Alex's post above mine if you want a TL;DR version - he says it perfectly and is not trying to destroy you personally :)

There is no denying that 2.2 brought better up close planet texture quality and performance, that's just a fact. And for the most part ice worlds do look better post 2.2. However, HMC, MR, and RW's lost (mostly) all color variety at the same time those better textures came. Also terrain mesh variation was flattened and lessened, thus resulting in less interesting planets overall. So 2.2 was a one step forward but two steps back deal. For the most part it was far easier to find interesting looking planets pre 2.2 than post 2.2. Even though the 2.2 Stellar Forge might "technically" be better, artistically it is not.

Again though, this has only resulted in exploration becoming worse solely due to the fact that exploration is lacking in meaningful mechanics and content. Eye candy was all we had, sightseeing, and when 2.2 took that it thus resulted in a degraded exploration "experience". Improving planet graphics might help make sightseeing what it once was, but to truly improve exploration it needs development in both mechanics and content, not just the eye candy.

To be fair, that is just your opinion. While I want more colour, I MUCH prefer current over 2.0 planets. To me its ten steps forwards and one back.

Thing is I never would have made any jokes if OP hadn't severely overestimated his power.

"I'm a kickstarter, they should listen to me."

Fun fact. Any kickstarter who owns the LEP, is actually the least important customer for FD to think about.

True, it is my opinion, based on hundreds of hours of post 2.2 exploration versus 1000+ hours of pre 2.2 exploration. Where I used to absolutely love flying low over planets sightseeing and landing on them to explore them up close, now they all look so very similar, drab, and boring that I've completely lost the will to even bother anymore. I'm not tired of the game, the difference is the planet changes made in 2.2.

But yes, that is my opinion, based on the evidence at hand. Thankfully Frontier agrees with me about the beige issue and admits to 2.2 having mistakes, and desires planet terrain improvements as well.

We have a long history on disagreeing about 2.1 vs 2.2, and a long history in agreeing that updating and upgrading the stellar forge (and to a lesser extent exploration*) should be top priority now. What an ugly sentece, my apologies. :)

*I always identified myself as a tourer, not a 'proper' explorer. I explore for views, special vistas - when I had time to travel IRL, I did it for great landscapes. Now I have Elite, and want it to be even better.

With all due respect, I think novelty plays a huge role in the romance towards pre 2.2 - having nothing and then 2.0 was such a giant leap, that after 100s of hours of planetary flights 2.2 never had a chance.
