PSA: Not sure if anyone spotted this but a dev has confirmed there will be paid content as well as the free stuff...

Call me a cynic...

but.. Talking about all the free stuff, and not mentioning, the 'content to buy' smells of 'something to hide'..

If it's not.. Why not mention it, even in passing.

Additionally... 'Premium Content' to me, means especially good content.. Which we're to pay for..

I've no problem if they want to go down that road, and, if the content seemed worth buying, I'd buy it.

But then that raises the question; is the free stuff, fluff and rubbish?

Yeah, its fluff and rubbish. Quick, complain more before it is too late! I mean, they never ever mentioned they would be releasing a number of different paid-for expansions after release. Everyone who bought the LEP assumed it was just a donation out of kindness. What else could it be? So it has to be something they have been hiding very, very well. Thank god you were on the case!

Mate i'm not LEP holder, missed by about a month or 2.

I'm just confused about the whole 'premium content' and free stuff.. Actually, I think I'll just wait and see :)

I might rage-quit for 5 minutes in protest about something.. Not sure what yet :D

I want clarity instead of 'legalise' , when a company starts being evasive and using indistinct definitions it usually means their about to shaft you.

All we have had is that "lifetime expansion pass owners will be looked after and will be getting their hands on premium content" what does looked after mean; discount on the new funding model, free on the new funding model, which is it? Premium content could be a badge and a cheap paint job its all so vague.

It will not be a discount, you have already paid for it. So you get it without having to pay anymore towards it. I will have to pay for it, if I think it's worth it.

They are not being evasive, they are just not ready to show us what it is yet as it is likely not in a showable state. It will not be paint jobs or a badge, I would not call that premium content, or is that premium content for you.

Premium in this case being: of exceptional quality or greater value than others of its kind; superior.

Lets wait until we find out what it is first before getting all worried and upset about it, as to be honest it really isn't worth it.

Honestly, it is very simple.

Horizons
premium content=stuff you only get if you bought horizons/LEP
free stuff=stuff everyone gets

Next year
premium content=stuff you only get if you buy [whatever it turns out to be called]/LEP
beyond=stuff horizons owners gets for free
free stuff=basic bugfixes and such everyone gets.

The only thing that is up in the air is the exact model used. Its why they posted on the boards that beyond is not 3.0 or season 3. They might want to use that terminology for the 'premium stuff'. Using a season model (multiple DLC for one fixed bundle-price) has a few drawbacks, so it could be that we will pay per DLC. The main revelation is just how much free stuff there will be for horizons owners.

It's how FDev work. They don't want to tell us until they have something to show. It really is that simple. As of right now, they have nothing to show, so there is no point in telling us. Can you just imagine if they told what it was and didn't show us anything. It would be people complaining that they haven't got any screen shots of it and they want to see them now.

People complain for the sake of complaining. All we have had is good new since the Expo, and poeple still complain.

I am sorry but... In this day and age, why do you pre paid for stuff? I cant think of that as smart in any way.
And my argument still applies, so far they have been transparent with "me". I cant speak for anyone else, not my job description.

Well for me it was part of my kickstarter reward. Since I and people like me were paying large-ish amounts of money to get the game funded so it could be made it was deemed fair that we would receive all future content for free.
So we pre paid for the development of the game so there is a game now for you to play.
Maybe it wasn't smart in hindsight but at that point in time there were no space games being made, Frontier Elite 2 was one of my favourite games of all time and how ED was described in Kickstarter it was exactly the type of game I was looking for.
FD were an established company so the pre payment was a relatively safe bet.

If FDev needs cash, start selling systems. By that I mean let players rename unnamed systems (subject to approval, of course). I know of one system I would pay a not unreasonable price to rename LTT #### to "Nya Sverige." That's what we call it anyway.

Thank you again, dev tracker...

Anyway, we already knew there were bits of Beyond they weren't ready to announce (which will also be free) but now it looks like Beyond isn't all they are working on either, and more paid updates will be announced alongside it.

So, Frontier wont be surviving on the skin store alone, and more importantly, their focus is apparently going to be split between:

The free core gameplay updates they (it feels like) have offered as an apology/goodwill generator for the past 2 years of slow development and barebones features....

And this paid content that they suspiciously didn't mention would even be coming at the announcement (as far as I remember).

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but this sounds to me less like they're totally focused on fixing core gameplay, and more like they threw it out as a side project (which would explain why there isn't all that much in it for a full year) to keep us from raging while they yet again split their focus onto more barebones features like multicrew/powerplay etc.

But splitting between a barebones headline feature no-one will use as it is incomplete, and making some marginal improvements to core gameplay is what we've had for 2 years now.

So...nothing has changed, and Frontier just announced it differently?

Of course, it could instead be that, because the team has increased in size (supposedly), that both the paid and free teams have as much investment/manpower as the updates we've had this year. But I'm not going to hold my breath on that until a dev say it.

I honestly don't know whether to be disappointed or not, I want to have hope I really do. Some confirmation by Zac, Dale or Brett that the latter is true rather than the former would be very welcome by myself, and I'm fairly confident much of the community as a whole...

TD;LR - Not FD bashing, just trying to have hope.

Either way, to me it doesn't matter. Fdev need money to keep making the game I like. I don't think it matters how they monetise it as long as they keep making it and I keep liking it. When I stop liking it I'l stop playing it. It's actually worrying when they don't monetise something because the question is "where are they going to get the money from?". If ED stops making money, they'll stop working on the game. Simple. Even if they devs love the game, they got to eat, and that means they'll have to move onto other projects.

I buy stuff from the store pretty regularly to help support the game I've essentially been playing for free for years (the price of the game plus Horizons over three years = virtually nothing), but there's only so many things I actually want from the store!

To be clear again, I'm fine with what they plan but their method of delivering the information seems strange at times, I'm struggling to remember what it was but there was another info drop where they took this approach and caused a larger longer forum storm than was required, it's almost sadomasochistic of them, or maybe they don't like the moderation team! :O

:D

Rats! Not only am I out of rep, there's no more space in my sig line! :)

I think it is complicated :

FX2017 : first show, FD had to feature some solid and finished achievements, such as new colorful planets and ships. People love ships.

Any other new unprepared/unfinished technology (atmospheric planet in mind) would have received a mixed feelings from people.

FD had to reach some steps such as new lightings and object models above surface first.

The market is quite secretive and challenging as other competitor just deliver quite impressive render. FD is surely trying to plan things up and to secure delivery too.

And from a marketing point of view this year is the Horizon sale year. It is FD main objective : manage to sell Horizons better and using The Beyond this way.

Meanwhile, they work under the hood on the next paying content.

As far as I read into that that, it will be cosmetic items only. Any ship enhancements or any paid items that give advantage over other players should not be included. To do so. would make the game a pay to win and unfair to those who do not buy.

I definitely hope so.
The day ED turns into another World of Tanks is the day I quit playing.
ED is my all time favourite game, my true number one but if WoT kinda features appear I'm out, no doubt about it.
I wouldn't even consider for a nanosecond to purchase non cosmetic or otherwise gamebalance influencing items........ever!!!

wow, Dutch I completely agree with you. I am happy to see cosmetic purchases in this pay to play game; however, If we saw credit purchases or special Modules that gave spending players advantages in ED it would really spoil the game for me. Perhaps non-combat beneficials would not be bad. Like a 100ly FSD... ;)

Thats quite an assumption, since FD haven't said anything! I'm hoping its for new content / functionality. We know the core game improvements are free.

We already have cosmetic items, so I don't know why FD would be referring to any new cosmetic items.

I sincerely hope its not for new modules, or anything than enhances ship abilities. That should come with any new content.

Single use 100ly booster pack - only £1.99!
Bumper set of materials - £1.99
Modular Terminal booster pack - £2.99
One-Time Use Engineer Upgrade Voucher - £4.99
Thargoid Loot Box Key - 5 pack - £3.99

Don't do it FD

Nah, still a pay-to-win mess. PVP isn't the only way to "win" this game.
