Why is the new Krait so big?

It's just not a realistic expectation.

If we ever get to wander around inside our ships, they're going to have to dream up stuff which will fill most of the internal space and then it'll be a case of having "empty" areas which will be populated with stuff when we fit Shields, Cargo Racks, Cabins, SCBs or whatever.

Here's a little sketch I made which provides an idea of how the internal slots of a Cobra 3 would impact on the internal space.

Presumably, most of the internal space is taken up with core systems and there's only a small percentage turned over to optional modules.

Yes and we dont know how big the "Core internals" nor what else is taken up by Crew quarters etc

Well, recall that all the core internals have volume too, as well as machine and habitation spaces. Oh, and armour / hull thickness of course.

That said, they're going to have to get quite creative to fill the hilarious amount of dead space in the T9.

But it should be.

There isn't any practical way for it to be unless ship masses increase dramatically, ship's are shrunk volume wise, or canisters become comically large.

If you could devote half the internal volume of a Python to cargo it would hold something like seven thousand canisters.

Uhuh,

A while back I was thinking about this far more than I probably should have.

Considering stuff like how thick the outer hull is, insulation, an inner hull and then service and utilities access, the internal space is going to be notably smaller than the exterior dimensions.
Bung in a honking great PP and it's associated gubbins (which is likely to be a fixed size per class, regardless of it's output) and thrusters which are similarly sized and they'll eat a lot of internal space.
Things like Sensors, fuel tanks and Life-Support take up roughly the same space (based on weight) as an equivalent cargo rack.
Add in some cosmetic stuff like, perhaps, crew quarters and a galley, locker rooms and an equipment room (for all the space-legs related junk) and you'll soon get to a point where the available internal space for optional modules seems perfectly plausible.

Dunno whether FDev put a lot of effort into this prior to finalising the ship design or whether they just got lucky but it, from what I've seen, it all works out surprisingly well. [up]

From what i understand, the reason ships take so long to produce in ED is they are already fully mapped out internally you just can't leave your seat to see it.
Not that it has all the textures etc but it possibly has all the empty voids and corridors.
Now that was at least the excuse the gave a long long time ago, and why they are reluctant to change internal sizes a great deal after the addition to the game.

the caveat to all that is a lot of ship balancing has happened in the last year or so which may mean they feel space legs aren't as close or important as they were and if we never get to see the insides then basically they can do what they like.

Ok, the Krait portion of this discussion has now ended, and we'll be focusing on a more meaningful topic for the remainder of the thread.

The Mamba!

I've never played nor heard of Elite anything prior to playing this game last year, but a few weeks ago I was reading a book about snakes to my youngest, and after reading about the black mamba, my mind drifted off to imagining the ship version of The Black Mamba.

Not sure if it existed in prior versions/Elite universe, but if not it should be:
- small, slender, and have a coffin shaped cockpit/body
- fastest non-SLF than anything else in the game and extreemly agile
- extreemly deadly hardpoint capacity. I'm thinking like, two huge and two large hardpoints
- weak armor, but large enough power supply and generator capacity, would be able to rely on rapid biweaves for defense

Basically, and big kids version of the Imperial Aegies SLF. Stuipd fast and agile, but no armor. The fastest and highest damage per shot than almost every other ship.

It would be the ultimate for experienced combat pilots, but less experienced pilots would likely die easily.

Who's with me!

I'm a big fan of small ships, but your idea feels really unbalanced. My 2D shielded Eagle Mk 2 can go toe to to with elite anacondas, but it is real hard work and can go wrong easily. I am definitely not the best pilot, although I fancy myself experienced ... If you give me a ship with the firepower of my Corvette (!) and faster than my eagle and other ships (eagle goes 670 currently, there are ships able to doal 800 boost so ...850 boost? ). Would be overpowered with the defenses of a shieldless SLF.

It would also make all other small ships obsolete in combat, and it would look crappy ... I mean the mentioned hardpoints alone are probably pushing medium size, it'd be 6 hardpoints with thrusters ... Those huge hardpoints are ... wait for it ... HUGE :D
