How the heck are we supposed to figure this stuff up in the day or so of mission availability time? Is all of this learnt by exhaustively going through the GALNET reports? I don't much like having to jump out of the game and into the real world to figure this stuff up but I am thinking maybe I am missing something?

A reasonable complaint. This FAQ was compiled as a result of Canonn research on the alien sites - you could probably find a site for yourself as there is a Listening Post in Maia that leads to one of the sites (Look around A 2), but the mission doesn't tell you that.

It's like the engineers where they ask for 1 Ton of Meta Alloys. And there's no way to know where to get them - and only one base in the universe sells them.

Hopefully FD get better at putting information in-game, or 2.4 is going to be very confusing for many.

I will start dropping on some of those "points of interest" such as the "listening posts", truth is, I am scrub when it comes to combat so not knowing what to expect means I usually keep to myself and continue on supercruise Thanks for the tip.

No worries - if you don't like combat then be careful following the trail from the listening post - hostile NPCs have been seen in the area o7

So this is actually a very big, complicated, time-consuming mission (especially since I don't have Palin unlocked). I accepted it not knowing this. What are the consequences of abandoning the mission - will Palin become "unfriendly" toward me?

The mission is easy enough - maybe an hour if you take your time: go somewhere, pick stuff up, take it back. Don't think he cares if you don't want to do it (maybe if you do that a lot). Only wrinkle is that you need to find a thargoid structure (see the first post), and if you don't have palin you need to hurry, as the things you are asked to pick up will corrode your ship

If you haven't visited a thargoid base it is well worth while.

Thanks for your help. This makes it quick. TBH you don't need corrosion resistance. It isn't far from HIP to Maia and the corrosion fairly distributes over several modules. The Thargoid site has plenty of samples to pick up. Actually the mission drops more credits. Did receive 10M cr for doing this now easy job. Would be great to have follow-up missions like ... grap a UP, go inside the Thargoid site, shoot something and bring it's remains ... or scan it ... or whatever... Last mission could be shooting a Thargoid vessel or scanning it and collect data or remains for science study.

Is this mission still repeatable? I cannot seem to get it to proc again either by instance changing, low waking or high waking and redocking with Obsidian?

I believe you need to carry a corrosive resistance cargo rack when docked at Obsidian Orbital to be offered the missions.

Payouts seem up - anyone know if they are random or related to anything?

I believe they are random. Few days back, I got a mission to deliver 4 Thargoid Resins for just under 9 million.

Edit: Anyone knows if these missions count toward Trade or Exploration ranking?

Yes, looks random, was really hoping the payouts would just get bigger

Ones asking for Biological seem to pay out better (only had 2, both > 20M), but need more data points.

Regarding trading / exploration : I don't think the mission adds to either - I looked at my trade & exploration stats before and after handing in and saw no difference.

Do you need to un-dock and dock again to be offered a new mission? I just completed one, but not being offered another. I'd hate to un-dock and get scanned.

Edit: after re-logging for 30min, I didn't get any more missions. Docked and re-Docked and got one immediately.

Mission usually spawns when you dock at Obsidian, sometimes need to leave Maia and reenter.

Don't believe it relies on reputation, unless you can prove otherwise Would have expected the mission to boost the station owner, but that faction doesn't own any stations - curious.

Do you have CRCR? The materials can corrode your cargo hatch and eject themselves - watch the message windows.

Updated guide with new names (Unknown => Thargoid, UA => TS, UP => TP). Added Thargoid Scout as a source of stuff and reworded a bit to maybe make less daunting.
