Are you guys happy with the current game and how the game has developed?

No, not really. I play it almost everyday but I usually end up thinking about how it could've been so much better. I now realize its never going to be the game I want it to be.

I paid less than $60 for the game and Horizons and I feel I have definitely gotten my money's worth. But as far as the direction and many of the added features, meh. I do think getting the main game flushed out before going further is a good idea. We'll just have to wait and see if what they are planning is worth waiting another year for.
Yup.

I do think that alot of frustration comes from what we've seen for the last 3 years. A couple of great updates, and a landslide of half-baked placeholder stuff. So when they talk about the 2018 stuff in broad terms with extremely little in the way of details, I find myself not convinced. I've seen 3 years of "improvements". Are the 2018 core game "improvements" gonna be of the same quality as we have seen so far? Is the exploration enhancements gonna be on the same level of "improving" missions by chaining the same missions we had together in a random and haphazard way and pretending that they are somehow different now? Is the Squadron addition gonna be the same level of "fleshed out" as multicrew was?

FDEV have done a lot of damage to their reputation since the Kickstarter. So when they say "We are listening to what the players want, and we're happy to say that in 2018 you can trust that we are on top of it."...can we though? Can we REALLY trust you? I want to believe, but I'm not convinced yet.

The good news is that we aren't being asked to pay up front, so there is zero financial risk to me to "wait and see". So I guess that's something. And who knows - maybe they really will turn it around and earn back some of my trust? What I'm currently seeing in 2.4 has me worried that they really don't "get it" though. But we'll see.

I´m very happy with the game, it is my most played game in the last 2 years.

In all honesty, it's probably my most played game in the last year too. Minecraft just might beat it out (I love exploring and spelunking in Minecraft, best spelunking simulator EVER!!!). Flight Simulator, Euro Truck, and American Truck would be next in line but I'm pretty sure none of them beat hours played for me compared to Elite and Minecraft. And Civilization VI is up there too for me.

The funny thing is that this """""Story arc"""" already played out months ago.

FDEV: "Oooooh. mysterious things are being added. You guys are gonna be so surprised. This content is gonna be so compelling. You guys will be pleased!"

Us: "Not suprised at all. It's thargoids. We've seen this coming for 3 years now. Not only are we not surprised, we can tell you exactly how it's gonna play out. Thargoids just outside of the human bubble, confined mainly to Conflict Zones. The "narrative" will be 99% Community Goals.

Joke was on us though. It was Signal Sources and not Conflict Zones. SURPRISE!

It isn't a joke - it's a sad commentary on gaming culture today.

If Frontier thought they could get away with it, this what The Return could have been:

Various parts of The Bubble on fire, and us scrambling to put it out.
Random Hyperdictions that may or may not include ganks.
Trade massively disrupted, but opportunities for those who have the courage, skill, and insight to take advantage of the chaos.
Explorers out in the black being very, very afraid in their duct-taped flying gas cans.
Wings of players attempting to fight them back not in select places, but maybe at Jameson, or other popular areas.
Some surprises in Colonia as well.

We could have had all of these things, and more - reasons to fight them, get their samples, move goods, research gear for our ships...but we can't have those things without actual danger and potential loss, and I really don't think I have to explain how today's gamer generally feels about that.

Also - uh, where did you expect them to be? Those are the places where things happen in real space, so naturally, that's where they would be found. Durr. I really hope that no one thinks that they are clever, or clairvoyant, for "knowing this all along," because, well...never mind.

I'm not sure how the INRA bases were first found, but those have nothing to do with CG's. Who knows what else there might be? Maybe something, maybe nothing. Hopefully, those who have gotten off of their butts in the past to find the things for all of us to enjoy, are willing to do so again.

On topic: I am quite happy with this game, and the direction so far. I could wish for more places to land, but Frontier had to deliver what they said they would with Horizons first. Now, they are going back and fleshing things out, while also working on new things. I think things look really good right now, and look to get better within the next year.

I think Frontier should have Thargoids start dropping into CZ's, and other such places for a weekend, start wrecking everything, and see what the reaction is.

I would really love to find out that this community isn't as weak as those in other games. Then maybe, just maybe, Frontier will take the gloves off, and we can have some really good stuff.

All I wanted was a space game where I could haul around space looking at stars amd planets. This was back in 2015. When I went to go look to see if such a game existed, "Elite: Dangerous" popped up. I was in luck because the game happened to also be in Xbox GPP at the time! Picked it up, and I got what I wanted plus TONS more especially with Horizons, and imo it just keeps inproving (Beige Planets aside). So, yes. I am very happy with the purchase and imo it is getting better. It is tedious at times, but nothing that's getting in the way of me having my fun in space.

Elite is the story. It doesn't have a story. All about what's possible, both real and imagined. Like a year-round Christmas tree. Don't really know more of it than you see. Sometimes things get moved and it looks different. Someone's been here. Lights twinkle and burn out. They will be replaced anew. Wail long enough and you might find gifts. But that one over there doesn't have your name on it. Maybe next time.

Same here, and the funny thing is, when people say "the game could be so much better", i'm thinking, hells, that would be terrible! I'd never stop playing :D

I am always bemused when they say that yet rarely go on and explain how to improve it, or what they actually want.

That's not really accurate. There are loads of excellent ideas posted every day, and those making ragequit threads ALWAYS make it clear what they wanted and didn't get. I kinda know what you mean, about the complainers, but many of us are very experienced gamers and know how it could be made better, sometimes it's pie in the sky, sometimes they hit the nail on the head. The onyl thing anyone can do is hope that Frontier prioritises the tings that we find important. I for one could not care less about space legs, for example, but I accept that I'm probably in a minority.

Well said, and yes I was being flippant - apologies all round.

Re Space Legs, or as I am now calling it, Elite Feet :)D) - you aren't the only one who doesn't have this proposed feature high on their personal priority list, I just can't see it ending well. It will either be something tacked on, so you can walk around your ship - how many will do that more than a couple of times, just like the Holo-Me feature. Or try to be Far Cry in Space, which unless they add a whole new game to the existing one, won't work.

My thoughts exactly. Can you say 'griefer with rocket launcher hiding behind every outcrop'?

Hehe, I am more looking forward to what some want, the ability to board another ship. Can imagine it now, you are minding your own business in SC, next thing you are interdicted. But instead of the ship firing on you, it stops and your scope picks up small blips moving towards your ship. You move away, blow up their unattended ship, wave the gankers floating in space goodbye and wake out :D

Well, they sometimes do, but often what they describe is so far off what FD are making its simply not going to happen or it would require so much work its simply unfeasable.

Some are realistic though, they do describe things that techncially could be done and might be in line with FDs plans, but then, the place to put such things is in the suggestions forum, where FD might actually just pay attention to them.

Horizons already adds a lot. However, I suspect there will be a 50% sale during the holidays again, so if you're in no rush you could save $15 that way. :)

Heh, that's why I put Horizons on my Wishlist, and keeping an eye out for the next sale, hope that there will be a significant discount (but, will accept any sort of reduction in price [big grin]). I paid full price for the base game, so yeah.

Have read some of the rest of this thread since I posted, and am wondering, is Elite FD's "flagship" game, or not?

Is the Squadron addition gonna be the same level of "fleshed out" as multicrew was?
The thing is the squadron feature isn't solely relying on itself. If FDev where to put in some sort of clan-managing-system into the game right now, what would it be worth? What would you do with better group communication? Working the BGS more effectively? Better organize some random, meaningless PvP shooting?

More on-topic: I think adding more ships, SRVs, space-legs and so on, is not going to improve the game by much, if the core game mechanics are untouched. Players need to have a larger goal, an agenda in a game in general.

I actually quite agree with you. I feel like they add clan-managing and group communication and a base megaship for the Squadrons to meet up. Ok, so now what? What are they gonna have to do that they couldn't do before? So I worry that unless there is some sort of "end-game" content giving Squadrons more of a reason to exist, it's just gonna fall as flat as multicrew did. And I worry that when FDEV is partway complete with coding Squadron features, they are gonna realize this. And then it's gonna be another half-baked feature that they don't put alot of work into because "they couldn't find a way to make it compelling." And then the blame will be dumped off on the players again. "If people use it, we'll maybe add more to it." But people won't use it much because there isn't really a reason to.

I hope it doesn't turn out like that, but it doesn't take much imagination to see it going that way. If they don't do it right, it could end up another feature that they wasted too much time on that could have been spent more wisely in other areas.

FDEV need to go all in on new features and really flesh them out, or just not bother at all IMO. That's what I wish Season 2 had been - non-atmospheric planetary landings, and then the rest of the season really fleshing that out and giving us more compelling things to do down there.

It certainly has the potential to be a game changer for us. Of course, potential doesn't mean it will be, it will all come down to the implementation. It might very well allow us to work the BGS more effectively and with the mobile base, allow us to more easily move en-masse to other systems. Possibly (as we have a few explorers in our group) even take out mobile HQ out into deep space.

I'm trying to keep my hype under control for this, as reality rarely matches hopes, but even if its only half of what i'm hoping it might be, it should be a great addition.
