Star Citizen Discussions v7

I am impressed by our weather forecasters, seems like CR visit to germany will cause several stormwarnings for sunday because of all the hot air that will come out this friday.
Considering what they are about to present over the course of several hours i am not really optimistic for SC at this point.

But the linguists on their team have focussed with Really Useful Stuff you need in game.
Glad the Xi'an language will be fully developed by 3.0

For all the fun and criticism this has received, there is nothing inherently wrong with this.

First...developing those languages was one of the stretch goals.

Second...this is something that should be done during the pre-Alpha phase because it then ties into the script and CGI

Third...this doesn't impact on the main areas of delay, which is the game engine and Vhris Roberts perfectionism causing CIG to do the same work two or three times over.

Developing those languages was work they had to do and it was done on the right time.

Compare that to FOIP. Again...this was promised and like languages, it is largely cosmetic. Unlike languages, FOIP will rely on netcode and other aspects if the engine which have yet to be nailed done and finalised. This is a feature which should be largely developed and added during the Beta phase. Sure...you can and should plan ahead in the current pre-Alpha by designing around the desire to add this feature, but FOIP itself shouldn't be developed until Beta precisely because it is cosmetic, doesn't add as much to the game as even languages and most importantly, relies on systems and functionality which aren't complete.

Only in Star Citizen could you say something so stupid and keep a straight face.

$250 for a piece of DLC and somehow it's a good deal....

They pulled in almost a million yesterday.

And apparently a pre-sale on the Pioneer?

Regardless, that's a lot of money for one day. Hard to beleive there are still so many people or so many whales still willing to throw money at this game. Ok, i get some people have the spare cash to keep throwing money at it, but dayum, there must also be a lot of people who really think they are getting a good deal.

At the end of the day, its a $60 game, and in theory, everything (or almost everything) should be earnable in game. I'm sure over time, if this is ever released, there will be storms about any content that is locked away and blocking off part of the gaming experience.

I mean, in ED there are some ships (CM4/Beluga), but not having access doesn't mean you don't get to expereince part of the game. This is certainly a concern with the "game changer" ship.

I almost can't wait to see how the game pans out, seeing all these people who have thrown hundreds or thousands of dollars at the game play it.

I get the feeling everyone wants to be chiefs and not indians. That's going to make for some interesting gameplay. /s

You should come and be a whale with me over at Dungeons and Dragons Online :p I'm seriously considering dropping the cash for their new Ravenloft expansion. At least that seems more then just pretty jpegs ;)

When I read this:

I knew it would sell out, because with 100 star systems, oh wait, per Chris Roberts that may only be 10 possibly 5 star systems on release (if ever released). With ONLY 2000 of the limited edition construction ships that would be on the high estimate of 10 systems only 200 construction ships per star system. Think of it, 10 star systems maybe 40 planets in each that you can land on (being generous), so with 40 x 10 being 400. Then only 5 construction ships per planet (400 x 5=2000) you can land on (ok ok I used 40 because it makes the math simple a well as being generous). So no matter if populated or a barren or earth like world, 5 per if evenly spread out. Of course that won't be the case, so expect to see 10 or more of these construction ships on each. Maybe people will wait till system 11 or 12 appear and be the first to claim them? Maybe wait 4-5 year and take your pick (if lucky) of 20 star systems to build on. Buy now before the price goes up.
.
Personally I took a refund and can't believe people are buying a ship like this with the known 5 to maybe 10 star systems on release, where would you even use it?

Yeah.

I'm also wondering how exploration will pan out.

Even with 100 systems, if they get their "million" players, how many days does CIG expect things to go undiscovered? Unless they keep spawning new PoIs or jump routes?

Even with just a small fraction of the player base they hope for, one thing that seems to occur with games like this is that content is consumed much faster than it is created. A couple of thousand players wandering around 5 or 10 systems can be expected to find pretty much everything a couple of days after its possible to do so.

More so if CIG does keep some of those systems for explorers to find.

To be honest....that argument can be made.

If my time is worth $10 an hour, and it takes me 50 hours to earn something in game, tjen spending $250 makes a degree of sense.

If you believe you can sell it for $500 once the game goes live...then it also makes sense.

However...it also cheapens one of the big reasons to play and bypasses one of the main in game activities...earning a ship...and turns the game into a Pay to Win.

Well, if i remember correctly they are going with a 1/4 planet size.

So the colonization thingy should not be a problem.

The Earth is 510 million m2 which becomes 127 million m2
The Moon is 38 million m2 which becomes 9,5 million m2

With 1 million players that is 127 square kilometers per player on an "earth" sized world and 38 square kilometers on a "moon".
And that's TWO planets. It's not like each colony claims a world, they claim a small area.

Exploration is something i wonder about too.

They cannot go with Elite style exploration "honk" since all planets and moons would be discovered within a day. They would have to make explorers land on planets, take soil and mineral samples and use a laboratory to truly find out mineral compositions and chemical yields.

Even then, it will require a LOT of content.

1M is really low for Citizencon presale to be honest. It is few thousand whales spending on multiple accounts expecting these rare ships being sellable in GM later on.

A few months ago I saw a video of a dude that was talking about the plans of THE COMPANY regarding exploration and colonization. I don't know how credible that dude is, who he actually is, what his sources are or in what relation he is to THE COMPANY, but he was explaining it, in much detail actually. I don't even know the video link anymore, but it is definitely out there somewhere (look between 2013 and 2016 on youtube).

Anyways, the way he described it, once a new planet if found from a jump point, it will start generating missions, first scouting, recon, prospecting, then transports of workers, terraforming equipment, later parts for factories, more workers & colonists, basic supplies like food and water, since they would not be self-sufficient to start. The numbers of missions would be massive, to the point that it would be difficult for any one group to colonize a planet alone. It would be a massive undertaking, for every single habitable planet found. So you need a big coordinated attempt with 200+ players to make it work. There might be other groups attempting to colonize too, so there will be political negotiations sometimes turning into peace, coalitions, war or even the destruction of the whole planet, impacting the colonization process and the economy of the galaxy (if you watch the news during a colonization conflict you might be able to make extra profits, by selling medical equipment or ammunition to that planet for example; or you will be able to use the chaos and dog-eat-dog-vibe that unfolds hours before a planet will get destroyed to enslave players or save them for inhumane amounts of cash [you can still enslave them when they are on board so you would make double profit]). You will actually need trained workers for the terraforming equipment that might be needed, it will be possible to alter the composition of the atmosphere and soil if you know how to do it (so this is another potential career for players, terraforming engineers). They are also plan on making players able to create planets, so the gameworld will be expandable, although this will very likely be quite a resource-hungry process.

Doesn't matter who was first, SC is aimed at gamers, and they would recognize the style of the Homeworld faster than they would notice the resemblance to Chris Foss works. In the reddit thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/comments/78xkq7/pioneer_presale_if_you_have_access/ "Homeworld" is used four times, Foss' name isn't used once. Also, paintjob is only a part of the problem, the general shape is very familiar, the "vibe" is there, even the art style of the image resembles Homeworld cinematics.

I don't think it is a problem.
"Vibes" are very subjective.

I think the designs differs enough to be qualified as an original work.
There are much, much worse problems with the Starcitizen business.
As far as I am concerned this is not even on my radar.
It is totally insignificant compared to the real problems

My guess is that FOIP was ready since a certain time but as an internal cheap* and easy facial mocap tool for SQ42 and NPC conversations, so given they had so much nothing concrete to show for Gamescom they hastly implemented it for the "wow" effect on stage.

*Not a criticism btw.

I'm also wondering how exploration will pan out.
Even worse: we're even still wondering how economy will pan out so that we can raise the money to buy, maintain and refuel these ships.

Is it me or are those pre-sale JPEGs more and more expensive? As if they knew as time flies their whale pool is shrinking retaining only the biggest, as if it was more certain they'd gather $1.5M through 2.000*$750 than 25.000*$60.

Anyway wether you're an oil mogul, a rich heir or a lottery winner... keeping throwing money into this is as constructive as cheering on a psychotic crashing repeatedly his head against a wall because you find the blood splatter beautiful.

Hrm, we, who are sitting in a glass house should not throw stones.
I mean its such a shiny red at this point, never seen before and it goes pretty good with the wall...

Would love to, i miss the D&D vibe. Ravenloft - one of the best settings ever.

But besides ED, i've got multiple games of Ark going, and i'm getting into Choas Reborn finally (just forged my first set, made a wizard combat set - probably a bad idea, but fun).

In other news, oh my, confirmed, the restricted ships will be avialable once the game goes live. I mean, that's a good thing, but makes it doubly funny at all these people splashing out big money on ships right now when they can't even use them.

So, its not pay to win, or pay to expereince certain features, its pay to avoid playing :D

Gotta love whales :D

They are becoming more expensive and that was said from the very beginning that the closer they get to release they would increase the price for concepts and the more specialized a ship were and the bigger they were they would become a lot more expensive to limit the amount of players starting with them.

but makes it doubly funny at all these people splashing out big money on ships right now when they can't even use them.

It's the mad hunt for LTI so if they crash into a planet they always get the core ship back OR they simply want to fund the game.

LTI feels to me more like convenience so that unlike EVE online you do not have to hunt the market for a ship once you loose it but you automatically get it back (sans upgrades and stuff unless you have a separate insurance for that).

Given CR described trading as very boring I suspect it's pay not to be bored by uber-grind. Like a lot of P2W games really.
