I am a gimbal scrub.

I use the weapons I find fun. Sometimes it's gimballed burst lasers. Other times it's fixed beam lasers. Right now, it's gimballed multicannons and fixed dumbfire missiles. But whatever it is, it's never to be the best - just to have fun.

Don't understand the 'gimbals are for noobs' sentiment on the forums.

I use whatever I need to get the job done....most of the time that's gimballed weapons. It would take a lot longer to kill my quarries using fixed only, longer in the fight = more risk.

Saying that I do have a fixed weapon DBS which is great fun to fly and I enjoy that too but it's not very practical.

Being the best or 'good' in ED doesn't even remotely concern me, I don't play ED to compete and I play in solo/PG mainly. Now get me on Planetside 2 and my competitive streak shows itself, I want to have the best/better K/D and points per min.

In all years of playing ED I maybe used fixed twice. My reflexes are not what they use to be and I happily using gimbals and turrets only, nothing to be ashamed of!

Not only my reflexes, but also I use a mouse, and moving that mouse all over like crazy when using Fixed, isn't my idea of fun. I need that extra little help of Gimballed to make it easier on my mouse and hand.

Plus the trade off is less damage compared to Fixed, so one is for one play style and the other is for another play style. One of the many reasons I love ED. It gives you options to play how you are most comfortable playing and not forcing you to do it one way that might not work for a large percentage of the user base and frustrating them...

I have a sneaking feeling that's something put around by some PvPers as a means of "leveling the playing field".

If you think everybody's using fixed weapons you can fit something more useful instead of a chaff launcher.
The only trouble is, if somebody isn't "playing by the rules", you'll end up wishing you had a chaff launcher after all.

So, tell everybody that they're "scrubs" for using gimbals and hope they listen.

And I'm proud! Yes I'm hilariously bad in fights, but I don't care.

Exactly what I thought, UNTIL I tried fixed guns (for lulz).

Then I quickly realized fixed are not that hard, and, in fact, not that effective either. In the end, it's a matter of, like, 2 or 3 hours training to gain a few marginal hitpoints (and hostile chaff-freedom).

The PVPers superiority in PVP has to lie elsewhere. Because, YES, PVPers are faaaaar better than I am at ... (surprise) PVP ;)

To me though, this is not "chicken gimballed" related ...

Yes, I know, phoney PVPers like to boast about gimballed nano below under-race weapons.

But REAL PVPers (i.e. non-griefing guys) are working on their mobility, their speed, the way they "flight-assist off" move. And they're working on their LOADOUT.

Which (sorry guys) make no sense in terms of lore / credibility but DOES (I admit) work in ... (surprise !) ... PVP :D

PVPers are damn good, that's for sure. But they are playing *another* game. They are stuck in the 21st century video game industry trying to exploit every single detail the devs let slip into the current game release.

Feel free to join them if you like : it is fun, it is challenging, it is interesting, no doubt.

But if you want to play 3303 Elite Dangerous, this is definitely NOT the way to go.

All IMHO of course :D

Put the strawman down.

I suppose these would be the same PvPers that keep campaigning for fixed weapons to be stronger, and stating that in a 1-v-1 gimbals actually win out due to ability to fire from a greater range of angles? TS even did a gimballed duelling guide featuring something like a 20 win streak.

That I've seen, the term "gimbal scrub" is most commonly thrown at gankers that cannot use anything but full gimballed/seeker missile loadouts. There's a line between being able to use gimbals better and not being able to use fixed at all. You'll also struggle in PvP without being able to use rails or PAs in any form.

This sounds about right. I've seen this tactic with another game I played: Freelancer. There was a provision provided by the developers for quick healing of hull and shields. Problem was you had to purchase nanobots for hull, and shield batteries for shields, and each ship type could only hold so many of each. On most multi-player servers, there was an unwritten rule, No regens in PvP. I almost always used them anyway as there was very seldom an official server rule (but if there was such an official rule, I would refrain). These people would cry and call me a "filthy regenner" and a host of other uncomplimentary names. I always said, "Talk to the developers. They put them in the game." They'd still cry even though I couldn't win even with them. It just prolonged the battle. Which was my intention. A 5 second battle isn't very fun, in my opinion. They cried hardest when I used them to escape when they were dock camping.

Put the strawman down.

I can't beat anyone except the newest of the newbies with either fixed or gimbals. Gimbals however make the battle last a bit longer than 10 seconds. It's not very fun when you can never even land a shot. And with the way some of these shields are engineered, what does it matter if I land a few shots? I can't break their shields anyway.

IMO, in any "competitive" environment, you'll have these types- you know, the sore losers that resort to terming and name calling because they're astonished they were actually beaten by someone else. Just not possible, in their minds.

They're simply poor sportsmen who should be ignored and avoided at all costs. Eventually when their "circle" dwindles down to only themselves they may (or may not) learn the valuable lesson... you win some, and you lose some.

I appreciate the confession, but what is the point you are trying to make?

I was simply stating it's an outright fabricated lie that PvPers propagate fixed weapons as technically stronger.

Many of us have fought to make them as competitive as gimbals in many forms, almost all of us will profess that gimbals are better in PvP, and many of us will admit that fixed weapons are often employed for the sheer challenge/enjoyment of it.

If you asked PvPers to summarise 1v1s, I'd put a million credits down that many answers would read between the line as "modifications battle" or...as "whoever runs out of chaff first loses". In fact a few PvP builds were put around the forum employing 3 chaff launchers for this reason.

Being "the best" is really for losers... let me tell you why?

If you are "the best", you can no longer progress, that is it, you have hit the ultimate top rank of your personal achievement... now you are getting older, your reflexes are dwindling and therefore your "the bestness" (butchering Queen's English, I know) has only one way to go... down... this means losing.

Now, by not being the best, there is always a chance to improve = winning

Don't judge my logic, I was in one of those escape pods before big green light sucked me up, not sure what happened after that, but I now sleep upside-down.

Trying to be the best at anything pertaining to a PC game is not much of a life goal. I'm in this for the fun/entertainment/relaxation, and worrying about what PvPers do in Open does not even show up on my radar. I play in my own little world, Solo, and sometimes venture out into Mobius if I want to say hello to someone. :)

There's a real difference between seeking to improve and being a complete perfectionist.

Everyone seeks to improve in life. We all want to do something "better" than we have before, and so forth. The difference lies in the ability to determine what's possible, and what's probable.

Everything is possible, but not always probable. When someone allows themselves to be carried away with the goal of perfection- they carry it a little too far.

I believe perfection is truly unattainable- but you can gain a measure of improvement in almost anything.

There's also more social acceptance in having weakness of some sort... we all have more in common with each other than we may believe.

Have some rep. The best gunfighters in the American old west still died from an opponent's bullet because they couldn't stay the best forever. Being the best is a fool's game.

Hello Ralph. I often wondered if your avatar represented your RL job. I sit up the front of UK MAGIC and put the frame where it needs to be for the "goats" you've probably spoken to. HaHa.

Back on topic, I'm a gim-baller. Have more fun with them. And since this is a game. Fun is the aim.

Yours Aye
