Anyone else not bothered by the knowledge that they'll never be "the best"?
Me. I'm usually satisfied by not being total crap.

In all years of playing ED I maybe used fixed twice. My reflexes are not what they use to be and I happily using gimbals and turrets only, nothing to be ashamed of!
Don't understand the 'gimbals are for noobs' sentiment on the forums.
And I'm proud! Yes I'm hilariously bad in fights, but I don't care.
I have a sneaking feeling that's something put around by some PvPers as a means of "leveling the playing field".
If you think everybody's using fixed weapons you can fit something more useful instead of a chaff launcher.
The only trouble is, if somebody isn't "playing by the rules", you'll end up wishing you had a chaff launcher after all.
So, tell everybody that they're "scrubs" for using gimbals and hope they listen.

Put the strawman down.
I suppose these would be the same PvPers that keep campaigning for fixed weapons to be stronger, and stating that in a 1-v-1 gimbals actually win out due to ability to fire from a greater range of angles? TS even did a gimballed duelling guide featuring something like a 20 win streak.
That I've seen, the term "gimbal scrub" is most commonly thrown at gankers that cannot use anything but full gimballed/seeker missile loadouts. There's a line between being able to use gimbals better and not being able to use fixed at all. You'll also struggle in PvP without being able to use rails or PAs in any form.
I can't beat anyone except the newest of the newbies with either fixed or gimbals. Gimbals however make the battle last a bit longer than 10 seconds. It's not very fun when you can never even land a shot. And with the way some of these shields are engineered, what does it matter if I land a few shots? I can't break their shields anyway.
Don't judge my logic, I was in one of those escape pods before big green light sucked me up, not sure what happened after that, but I now sleep upside-down.
Being "the best" is really for losers... let me tell you why?
If you are "the best", you can no longer progress, that is it, you have hit the ultimate top rank of your personal achievement... now you are getting older, your reflexes are dwindling and therefore your "the bestness" (butchering Queen's English, I know) has only one way to go... down... this means losing.
Now, by not being the best, there is always a chance to improve = winning

Have some rep. The best gunfighters in the American old west still died from an opponent's bullet because they couldn't stay the best forever. Being the best is a fool's game.
Hello Ralph. I often wondered if your avatar represented your RL job. I sit up the front of UK MAGIC and put the frame where it needs to be for the "goats" you've probably spoken to. HaHa.
Back on topic, I'm a gim-baller. Have more fun with them. And since this is a game. Fun is the aim.
Yours Aye
