Ships The Keelback Club

Against any "serious" PvP ship and player, I've never been able to survive more than a minute, much less be a credible threat. Too squishy to tank, too slow to evade, not enough firepower to crack their defenses.

I love the Keelback, but part of that is knowing its limitations. I've lost it in PvE due to biting off more than I can chew.

That said, DB GUARDIAN said his group is deadly in PvP, so perhaps he's talking about a wing of four Keelbacks with fighters (thus 8 ships total) vs a single target. THAT would be pretty deadly, especially if everyone targets the same subsystem. Then again, numbers often win regardless of the ship used - I'd much rather face one Anaconda than a wing of four Vipers, for example.

They need to rip the spare seat out of the Vulture (I mean, really, who MCs in a Vulture?) and stick it in the Keelback.

Didn't they say sometime recently (Expo maybe) that the KB will be getting a second seat for MC? That would probably almost tip it over as my favourite ship over the Cobra IV if they did that TBH!

KEELapaloosa ... or KEELstock ???

Speaking of an EXPO ... wouldn't it be neat if we got a bunch of proud Keelback owners (who have been wasting away, waiting for a multicrew option - hint hint FRONTER) to meet up somewhere ... kind of our own "Keelstock" or "Keelapaloosa" or "Keelfest" event?

I'm playing Elite on the XBOX right now (and have been since it was in BETA as a GPP game preview program game) ... but it would be really cool to hear of some type of KEELBACK "group event" happening on any platform.

Out of the 25 ships I own, including some big ones, (with multiples of some ships setup for various stealth/tank builds) ... I always end up back in this one to goof off in. (It's the spinny engines mannnn!) And i'm currently having a blast in mine, especially in a full wing "Keelo Krew" at the current CG bounty event in LHS 2094 ... with most of us running healing beams and packhounds or overcharged multis.

But like so many have mentioned, the whole lack of a multicrew option with the Keelback is just plain annoying. So what did Frontier do? They gave us the Vulture with multi-crew ... REALLY ??? Seriously, who multi-crews in a Vulture? (It's not like we would take over the galaxy or anything in mass numbers of Keelbacks ... OR WOULD WE?)

And Madrax, don't get me started on how awesome a multi-crew Cobra mk4 would be with a SLF (I'd be racing you to Founders World to get the first one!) ... but it still wouldn't have those cool little "spinny engines" !!!

NOTE TO FRONTIER ... we need multi-crew ... FOR THE KEELIES !!! (cheap reference to the Destiny 2 commercial. LOL)

Do it at the Keelblack Rings. ;)
I discovered it when returning from Beagle Point (mine was the first (and only?) Keelback that travelled there, very pretty place.

Another GLORIOUS weekend for alpha wing ...

Yes, ladies and gentlemen ... "KEEL TEAM SIX" was in action on the XBOX console near WYRD this weekend ... keeping humanity safe once again.

Special Operators 1,2,3, and 4 (of ALPHA WING) were hitting the rings with highly engineered high capacity Packhounds, and long range healing beams.

There are unconfirmed rumors of multiple "operators" losing their steely composure ... and giggling in unison ... as LOTS of missiles from the wing utterly destroyed large targets in a single volley.

We are considering applications, on the XBOX side, for new recruits ... "Would you like to know more?" (Cheap reference to Starship Troopers) LOL

I'd be interested in seeing a coriolis link to the buildout most of you are using? I spent a few hours a couple of nights ago engineering my Keelback with Beam & Pulse lasers and Multicannons and managed some really good luck with respect to mass savings so, while the loadout is like this: https://eddp.co/u/icRicrFC, the ship still has a 30 LY jumprange

Hey bicarbon8,

Most of us are using 2 small healing beams (either efficient or long range engineered) and high capacity packhound missile racks for our loadouts. Some are using level-5 (no jitter) overcharged multis ... when they don't have access to the packhounds (and I highly recommend doing the grind for packhounds AND buying lots of em! LOL). You can also use medium double shot frag cannons, which are BRUTAL at 500-600 meters to most small and some medium ships (and the screening shell engineer mod makes them reload faster AND can shoot down packhounds with the right trigger timing). I am also using engineered reverb torps and engineered seekers on my stealth PVP build.

We are A rating and engineering the Power Plants, Thrusters, FSD, and Distributors. We are running level-5 thermal resistant biweave shields with a couple shield boosters and a chaff or point defense (my shields are around 400). And the ship launched fighter bay comes standard on our base model this year LOL. You can D rate the Sensors and Life Support to save weight (and keeping twice as much iron as nickel material will now allow you to "synthesize" more life support time in your right hand panel under the inventory tab) ... or you can A rate them like I did and do lightweight engineering, to keep weight down.

If you don't want to (or can't afford to) upgrade your armor, you can go for the FREE additional armor points by engineering your standard "lightweight" armor (on any ship) with ANY armor engineer mod ... without additional weight being added to your ship. (Kind of Frontier's way of quietly helping us out a little with standard lightweight armor ... Shhh!) My "normal" Keelie has almost 1700 armor points currently, with hull reinforcements and resistances all near 40% on all types (and my stealth version has almost 3000).

There also seems to be an overlooked trick to using thermal type weapons with any ship. Pay close attention to the "distributor draw" and the "rate of fire" for pulse and burst lasers ... because the beam distributor draw is a constant value PER SECOND, whereas the distributor cost PER SECOND for a burst/pulse laser SEEMS TO ME to be the "rate of fire x dist draw" which sometimes makes them actually use MORE distributor PER SECOND and shoot for LESS TIME than an engineered beam laser.

Like I have said before, something always brings me back to the "Keelie" to goof off in. And some in our group usually fly corvettes, anacondas, etc ... but there is something really satisfying and enjoyable flying these little "lunchboxes" in a wing ... and we all laugh really hard sometimes, and giggle like school children ... and that is the greatest gift Frontier could have ever given us armchair space commander "grownups".

And for that I say "Thank You" to David Braben, and so many awesome folks at Frontier.

brilliant! thanks for that. +1 to your rep :)

I’ve been in both a Keelback and a Vulture this week and was thinking to myself that Lakon really should have taken some pointers from Core Dynamics when designing the Keelbacks cockpit. :)
I still love the Keelback though, definitely one of the games more enjoyable ships!

It's the ultimate "rustic" experience (minus the rich corinthian leather) that all those OTHER fancy schmancy eye candy ships with "built in foot massage" and "pretty" avionics just can't match ... and the ladies like those cute little spinny engines! (teddy bear quality, I tell ya.) LOL

But seriously, if they ever put out a raider ship kit for it ... I'm all in! And a raider kit for the SLF's would be kinda neat too.

Interested in a Keelback minor player faction?

Hello All,

Some of us commanders on the XBOX side are trying to startup a minor player faction ... with the background narrative being focused around the "character" of the Keelback (or the "lunchbox" as our group sometimes affectionately refers to these combat freighters).

We also fly other ships together in our group (even the big ones from time to time) but we wanted a player group at least centered around the personality of the Keelback. And the good ole "lunchbox" is just a really neat and overlooked ship in the game ... and the rebuy is cheap as well!

If anyone on the XBOX side of the fence is interested in becoming a part of our group, please send me a forum private message. (Let me know if any PC or PS4 folks are interested as well.)

Below is the latest background narrative we have been kicking around in the group ...

ORIGAMI AEROSPACE INDUSTRIES

It started out as a "paper thin" commander group,
coming from many galactic powers, just wanting to
serve and protect everyday hard-working citizens
in agricultural and industrial systems around them.

Using ships formerly mothballed from service,
they purchased and flew in these wings of highly
engineered "lunchbox" combat freighters.

Wasn't long before the group, with public support,
was "folded" into an official corporate entity
called "Origami Aerospace Industries".

... but to the beloved populace, in systems they
diligently patrol, they are still affectionately known,
and honored, with the title ...

"KEEL TEAM SIX".

So is the Keelback getting any more love now that an anti tharg fighter is available?

I would love to take a crack at a thargoid in a full wing of Keelies with those special SLFs ... just let me get that one passenger mission in first ... to pay for my NOT HUGE rebuy! LOL
