Currently a large portion of the player base don't want to pay for another season.
The Frontier Expo 2017 video currently has about 47k views. By comparison the "tech demo" of the other space sim has about half a million views (including fan-made videos on YouTube). That's because while the core improvements for ED are very important to retain and increase active players, they didn't show anything amazing. The other space sim blew people away with procedural cities, space legs and atmospheric planets.
Frontier must release something jaw-dropping, mind blowing in order to persuade enough people to pay for the season after Beyond or any premium content.
For example release: basic atmospheric planets + basic procedural cities. That would convince many existing players to buy it. It could also attract a significant amount of new players.
it's easy to show wonderfull video of amazing things that are never released. Sadly, FD have the bad habit to release what they show.
the 3.0 star citizen stuff looks realy cool, I kinda with fd would team up to put better planets in elite but I know that wont happen, a guy can dream tho
But when they finally do and ED has no proper response to their mind-blowing features then it will blow ED out of the water.
Yeah, no... latest reveal at Frontier Expo totally didn't cover the fact that we ARE getting new planetary graphics....
That other space demo, is not arriving for a long time. That being said I agree that ED is not going full steam ahead. A good deep redesign of the core game is a good thing, and FDEV knows that more competition is coming from many new space games.
Once 3.0 gets released, i bet you 80% of Elite players will migrate to Star Citizen.
Think this may well deserve a thread on the matter... Coming soon!
By 2019 SC may not matter any more, because everyone left ED anyway for Bethesda's or CD Projekt Red's space game.
Look at the night side of any inhabited ELW. Examine the distribution of lights across its surface. Those are cities and towns, from high density urban centers, to medium density suburbs, to isolated communities. Frontier has already done the hard work, procedurally generating where people live on a world. From there, as has been demonstrated by titles like FSX, procedurally generating cities, towns, and villages can proceed.
Lets hope SC has amazing ganking potential. With systems you can blockade and lots of guilds so little people can act as if they're important because they are lieutenant head chief officer of the north west wing of the internal department from some ridiculously named faction. And when/if that happens Elite will be a better game, why? Because all the moaning little (insert four letter word of your choice here) wil no longer be here. All the little gankers will move on and we can get back to having serious discussion's instead of listening to players who only know how to hate everything due to being depressed and un-happy with their own lives.
Yeah. The Pope poops in the woods, bears wear funny hats, and players moan about everything.Atom. and legs? Huge task that I can wait for as I have an entire galaxy to fly around. That other game is going to be smaller than Colonia and will get old fast as players start to moan about everything just as they have here.
