Things in the game you've always wondered about

Why anybody would pay me Cr1M (or even a few hundred 1000 Cr) to ferry them about on a tour, when they could buy a ship for less. And then when we get there as soon as they've scanned the beacon they want to go home. Some people have too much money.

Because the trillions of people living in the galaxy in the game don't all have pilot licences or training to fly ships. Could you imagine if they all could and how crowded space would be?

1. Why our ships bridges have so many extra empty seats. Holograms don't need to sit, so why the seats? If you're going to project a holographic Gunner or Holographic Fighter Pilot, why not project the chair right along with them.?

Haha, or just put our giant face on the front of the ship, Thomas the Train style.:p

I have always found it odd that Universal Cartographics can't immediately grant you "First Discovered By" but they can always tell you immediately when someone else has already discovered the object.

Planets cast shadows on rings, but rings don't cast shadows on planets.

Funny thing is I didn't even notice this glaring omission until I got a Sol permit and went to see Saturn. It looked all wrong, and not nearly as awesome as it should. Hope they fix this when they do the planet makeover.

This isn't my joke/observation but ... rather than go to a standard engineer (who's seemingly incapable of reproducing, let alone improving upon, his previous efforts without numerous retries, most of which seem to make things considerably worse) ... why can't I just pay a visit to the engineers employed by my ship's insurance company who can not only reproduce what I had EXACTLY, but can do so at any station, anywhere in the galaxy, and all they demand in exchange is money (which I have plenty of).

Of course they can try infinite times on a module, and you can return it to stock any time.
You can also resell it for full price.

Why do our flight suits allow for a separate toe? Are we going to develop opposable big toes in the future? What can we actually operate with this marvellous new evolutionary feature? (Could it be the jettison all cargo button, or worse, the self destruct switch under our toes?)

Not all flightsuits have the separate toe
The Imperial ones for example

Mine is why after getting over 115% heat one gets an occasional "[OHClog] Hazardous Substance Detected" warning. Yes I know the ship is heating up, but what's the hazardous substance? Burning electronics and plastic?

That is a new thing and might be a bug
The internal damage triggering that message incorrectly

Of course I could replicate all the cool stunts and things in the video. However, I have big hopes in the announced wing-missions, so game-play in wings, as shown in that trailer, will actually make sense - beyond of making a cool video to show off.

So to speak, I wonder if the games great assets will be put to some more use in game-play terms some day.
I absolutely agree.

This whole thread should be forwarded to FDEV as a "to-do" list.

on topic:
- you can't name your ship "Moby " because .... language... issues. Killing whole wedding party, human trafficking or ditching unhappy passenger thousands of LYs from civilization with no hopes for rescue (in space no one can hear your scream, you shouldn't complain about my hull that much) on the other hand is completely fine. But flying "Little " (short for Richard) - forget.

There go my dreams of a Federal Assault Ship named after (Amercian [real]) Football Legend Butkus ....

Ahh good to know then. I never did notice it before, so yes, it seems like it's a new error that might be meant for something else, as it really doesn't make sense for when a ship is over heating, unless components let off harmful toxins when burning up...

Not sure about this.

I would have thought that light shining on a planet's rings would be diffused by the time it hits the surface so it wouldn't create a "solid" shadow of the rings.

It's not easy to tell what's "realistic" these days because outfits like NASA have a habit of "enhancing" their images to make them prettier.

Presumably, you'd have the best chance of this happening when the planet's rings were almost perfectly aligned with the star, because that'd provide the best chance of sufficiently occluding light, and you'd end up with a narrow band of shadow near the equator of the planet?
I would have thought it'd have to be a seriously dense ring to occlude enough light to project shadows right across a planet's surface.

what the lore reason is that cmdrs cant land on planets and what the lore reason is for not being able to override a system permit.

I have always found it odd that Universal Cartographics can't immediately grant you "First Discovered By" but they can always tell you immediately when someone else has already discovered the object.

Anyone can call them up and "claim" to have discovered a new world but it's only when you hand over your black box flight recorder to a certified Universal Cartographics representative that your claim can be validated and added to their database. ;)

In order to support the galactic privacy and security treaty of 3301 and in accordance with the galactic insurance ombudsman and financial underwriting agreements of 3302, all Frame Shift Drives and Planetary Landing Suites require a certified activation chip to be fitted (specialised bits of tamper-proof hardware which can only be obtained from the Pilots Federation). These devices expressly prevent jumping into permit locked systems and/or activation of the planetary landing facilities on planetary bodies not currently covered by the manufacturers warranty, specifically, for recommended ranges of tolerance for hull stress and control instability.

Psst - OK, it's not strictly "lore" - I just made it up - but it'll do!

See, I think that can all be related to your previous post, about Universal Cartographics.

I like to think that we are all, basically, at the mercy of UniCart to help us fly around.

We're all flying ships which use the UniCart database to plot jumps, provide information about systems and data about what's in those systems.
If somebody comes along and pays UniCart a heap of credits, they can permit-lock a system in their database or, perhaps, remove it completely.
When that happens, you're flat-out not getting into a system because the UniCart database won't tell your ship how to get there.

It might be nice if this could be expanded on, in-game, somehow.
Give people tools and modules which allow them to navigate "manually" and put stuff in the game which can only be found by using those tools rather than relying on the UniCart database.

Likewise. Got this today, haven't seen it before, I just assumed it was, as you say, plastics and stuff burning up as the ship melted...

Or how they can stay in business buying the same system scans over and over from hundreds of Cmdrs, or why they don't have a map of a system 15 ly from Sol. Seriously, you should be able to see every discovered system on the map.
