Modes Elite Dangerous - An inside look at BGS PVP (SAW Parody)

......

They arent going to build and put time into something again. Just for it to fail, AGAIN.

Makes sense right?

PP, CQC (Arena), RNGneers.

Nope, they will not waste time on something that has failed or is failing.

They'll make something new to "encourage" Open PvP - and watch that fail, again.

:p :)

Why does it show on my right hand panel, underneath Combat, Trade and Explo ranks then?

I don't play CQC either, but it is right there in the main game.

CQC = ED PvP

or at least one of the main Frontier approved options.

Who cares? The dev credits are also part of the menu and so are the training videos.

CQC is not ED, wonder when they will finnaly get rid of it and we will all have a laugh.

But...but mr 90s some of us do like the BGS and PP, so they didnt really fail did they (dont make me sad i want them to continue sniffles sniffles. :( )

Yes there could be improvement as with pretty much everthing (especially in relation to my skillzz) but I dont see them as failures.

Some of us like CQC too...

I think its a failure and will never touch ot, whats your point exactly?

I think it was a raving success, not for what it was intended but it did have a secondary purpose.
To separate those who PvP for fun/challenge and to highlight who just wants fish in a barrel.

I think it did that very well. As those who want fun / challenge fight for CQC improvements.
The others just insult it, say it's not Elite (despite it is) and complain Elite isn't Open Only.

So CQC is a success, a huge one.

And the actual purpose it was built for, ended up being the other link in my sig, as people made their own PvP Hub.
The one I believe you moaned about because fair fights are "dull" or something.

Those who say CQC is the PvP-Combat mode for Elite:

CQC is great for some fast and fun PvP Combat. I like it. I play it from time to time. It's a good thing to play for an hour or two, just for a change of pace. It's great for explorers who want a change of pace. They just can log into CQC and have a littel combat fun.

But it is very limited. It is limited to three different ships. It has no kind of strategical element beyond "capture the flag". It does not integrate with the maingame in any way.

So my answer is: CQC is not the PvP-Combat mode of my chosing.

There comes Powerplay.

Powerplay is great for long term strategical gameplay. It is not only PvP combat but it is Power vs Power political, logistical and military competition about teritorry.

But Powerplay is centered around hauling lots of powerplay commodities and hauling more stuff. Some powers have the possibility to expand via comabt zone. Mind you only HALF the powers have this, the others are forced to do even more hauling to expand.

So where I want to go with this? As most would agree hauling is more effective outside of open, becouse you can min/max with shieldless 700t cargo Cutter without risk. NPC interdictions are not a risk, agreed?

This is why most playergroups who still are engaged with powerplay are FORCED out of open to stay competitive. Becouse in open play you have the RISK of losing a 700t cargo Cutter to opposing PvP Combat.

Of course it's fun to play the undermining game in open and this is where I have found most meaningful PvP Combat interaction with opposing powerpayers.

Also in this case, players who have earnt a lot of merits by undermining are usually trying to avoid PvP Combat to bring the merits back home. But at least you still have the CHANCE to try to follow theire wake or predict to which of theire home contorl systems theire going and wait for them there, if they are staying in open at all.

So. My point being ... PvP-Combat in open in a meaningful setting only happens when both parties have nothing to lose. As soon as there are objectives or goals involved players tend to go the most secure way and avoid combat.

That's why powerplay is not real PvP-Combat option too.

And that's why I think that ED has NO meaningful PvP-Combat content at the moment being.

What we can do to have PvP Combat is, meet up for staged wing vs. wing fights, be that in powerplay or just for fun with several playergroups, pvp-hub, ...
Or go criminal and randomly attack players be it in a pirate roleplay way or just psycho attack.

Both options are not statisfying for me. But I know, I bought the wrong game for this - despite for wings and powerplay suggesting that there would be a meaningful pvp-combat environemnt. But there is none. Neither CQC nor powerplay are.

With some minor tweaks powerplay could have been that strategical pvp feature form elite. It still can be. There just needs to be some choices to be made - so powerplay cargo and active merits can only be held in open. I know. I repeat. And it's against all modes equal. Still it'd be an easy and clean way to implement real pvp-feature for elite.

"The new bubble" is a nice Idea too, but it would locally seperate the playerbase. It's to think about what would be the worse trade off: having one game feature that has some open-only activities or having a whole fraction of the playerbase segregated to a third bubble (old, colonia, pvp)

Arkadi,

I agree with everything you said above, with one exception: I think removing Powerplay from Solo and Private Groups would be a disaster for Powerplay, participation wise.

How many of those players, currently in Solo or Private Groups, do you think would continue playing Powerplay if they were forced to play in Open? In my experience, not too many, especially in the case of the non-combat oriented players. I suspect that the current population in Open is actually artificially high, thanks to knowing that if the situation in Open becomes intolerable, you can always relax and have fun in other modes for a while.

My preferred course for bringing better PvP combat to Powerplay is two-fold:
  1. Powerplay missions. One of the major reasons I hear about not playing Powerplay is that you can either play Powerplay, or you can play the rest of the game. You can't do both. Powerplay missions would expand participation in Powerplay, including Open-only players.
  2. Reward players for actually participating in PvP. Not just combat, either. Give haulers who make it through a player blockade bonus merits. Any such rewards should be based on the relative strengths and skills of the ships and Commanders involved. Systems need to be in place, of course, to prevent the inevitable player collusion to game the play, rather than play the game.

I am so nicking that idea :p

It does not integrate with the maingame in any way.

See now I have to keep answering this point, which shows some of you really have no clue about CQC.
It is integrated in to the main game, and it is quite clear and plain to see.

  • The credits you earn in CQC, are added to your main game bank balance - as credits are not used in CQC.
  • The Rank you earn in CQC is proudly displayed alongside your other ranks in the right hand menu.
  • There is a station with all the ships, all the modules and a 10% discount, accessible only for CQC players in the main game.

That is 3 very big integrations in to the main game that have been part of CQC since day 1.
I also asked in the CQC sub forum about rank decals for CQC for the main game some time back, so we may get those as well.

Like it or not, CQC is part of Elite: Dangerous.
And it has been a success in the way I mentioned.

This also goes with the min/maxing thing.

When you BGS in Open, your ship set up is WAYYYY different than if you do it in private or solo.

I have some defenses, with some boosters. Hull reinforcements and cargo racks and or passenger modules. You may need a wake scanner if you want to hunt someone down, actually wish I had that the other day. The one time someone came out.

But the PVP META it self would literally change. You cant min max with no shields, and you cant min max for maximum carnage.

You have to do it all. Unless you run Data missions. Those dont take up any slots for modules.

Anyways, EVERYTHING changes when BGS games come into play.

Or, you can just go into solo and private. Min/max for maximum passengers/cargo. No shields, no risk. Everyone knows NPC's arent going to do a thing to them. But they do know the players they are fighting against will.

A lot of people on these forums literally dont understand any of this. Mostly because they dont do any of it.

But they have no problem fighting against something, they dont even take part of.

And the ones that do, know they have the advantage in private and solo here. It forces the BGS META, into solo and private because thats where you min max, for maximum results. Because there is no risk.

Same with power-play. Literally the same.

Equal modes Equal risk my Rear posterior.

What sort of idiocy is this? You say "Everyone knows NPCs aren't going to do a thing to them"
Guess what, buddy! NPCs attack all and sundry! Combat ship, cargo ship, explorer ship! I tried the lot, and in solo I'm being attacked by single and multiple NPCs.
Even without cargo they will attack. Some call you "A useless dreg" nd leave, but not many.
Why is it that some people bulls**t about solo players not being attacked?
Just tonight, I was attacked by an Anaconda, a Federal Gunship and a Fer-De-Lance. I survived! They didn't! I was lucky! Earlier 2 Annies were beating me up so I boosted away. Good luck to me. No damage. Oh yeah! Guess what? No Cargo! But they still wanted my cargo!
Get off your high horse about NPCs not killing players. Yeah, they are easier to kill, but not when they gang up on you!

I thought this was a bit off topic, but truth needs to be championed!
Oh yeah! Same ship! Same build! Open or solo!

Thanks for reading me, Darkfyre!

I don't know, maybe you are right and powerplayers number would dwindle even more if it would become an "open only" thing. The powerplay subforum already had this discussions and my impression was that even among the engaged powerplay community there is about a 50/50 split pro/contra open only.

Maybe some of the pvp-combat players who have not been interested in powerplay would be drawn to it, if it's policy would change. Maybe some who gave up on powerplay would return. I would. However this is purest speculation. The thing that keeps me locked to this idea is it's simplicity.

I admit there are many other good proposals how to make powerplay a better place. Powerplay missions is one of my favorites here too. Still I am not really sure how powerplay missions would make open pvp more viable. It would make powerplay itself more accessible and varied, that's sure.

Also I like your "2nd", but again, I have no idea how this rewards for participating in pvp should be recongniced by the game. This seems to be something that is hard to achieve with program code. But I have no idea of programming so maybe some know if this could be done. It would be great. But I doubt it's doable.

You got me there. How could I miss those things that ground CQC as foundation of Elite gameplay! Indeed, we can reach CQC Elite in game :D

And get paid a pittance for it.
To gain access to a station that is the double of Jameson, which you get from the any of the other ranks hitting Elite.

:p

1 Engineered commander can do more than those NPC's. Thats been proven. Time and Time again. There are Meta builds for PVP. Those are just NPC's.

Hardly idiocy at all, Especially when the lead DEV points it out in this post,

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=237822&p=3680532&viewfull=1#post3680532

But I guess you wont read that either.

Again just because they havnt given the incentive to open. Does not make anything Sandro has said wrong. OR disprove what I have shown.

The fact he retracted "incentives" a week after, makes your favourite post wrong.

Hardly. Nothing changes in the way of Risk and Reward. Just because they didnt give open the incentive. Doesnt not make any of that wrong.

Go fly through a CG in solo, then go do it in Open. Use a shieldless build like you would in solo and private for maximum cargo space too. Let me know how that goes for you.

I never fly shieldless. It's usually the second biggest slot I use. Biggest being reserved for the scoop.

Flying with a proper shield, Open is not risky at all. Submit, high wake.
