Spoilers I don't think frontier intended to reveal this.

Have to agree with those that say it is probably just a convenience to show known Thagoid and Guardian sites, given they there locations are now pretty common knowledge, and listed on site like Canonn.

It is my understanding that there are TWO Thargoid factions. It is entirely possible that humanity might form an alliance of some sort with one side or the other.

In book-based lore, it is said so, but so far nothing points to it in game and nobody can prove that the Thargoids we currently encounter are part of these factions, or if these are still a thing, or even if they'll ever appear or have effect in the future.
So, right now, saying there are factions among the Thargoids we see is a theory with no evidence whatsoever.

I don't mean to jump on you, just pointing that this theory has been considered as facts by many around here and I've been fighting that idea for a few months now ;)

Yup... there's nothing at all in the game to suggest there's two Thargoid factions.

How do we know this will be more than just galaxy map indicators for systems with Thargoid stuff and Guardian ruins?

Because its in the Factions tab. I´m convinced we´ll see Thagoid factions in the mid- and a return of the guardians in the long-term.

Yeah, so why would they add it with Chapter One if there's no way for us to ally with them or additional interaction options?

I dont believe they will add it with Chapter One. They were showing the new features in a Dev Hotbuild. Not an actual Alpha/Beta release candidate. Probably tons of stuff in there thats not gonna be released anytime soon. I also dont believe this was unintentionally. They know ED players are nerds who will analyse every frame. Since they´re a stock market listed company, they are not allowed to announce features or content with no fixed release schedule via official channels. This might very well be a friendly wink on whats coming to the game.

I also believe we will be landing on atmospheric planets be the end of the year. It might be rudimentary & uninhabited but a good framework for further expansion and additions in 2019. All clues point in that direction. Horizons was a paid update with landable planets. Obsidian Ant visited the HQs and was shown future content while being under an NDA. A couple months later he speculated about atmospheric planets being quite possibly paid DLC in half a sentence. And I have no idea what else would be so significant to make it a paid update. Well, new space phenomenons probably. But what the heck do I know...

Ah, I know that DB is a very smart man and he has a team of very smart and dedicated people working withhim. And they all know certainly how to entertain a crowd.
I had my doubts like pretty much everyone else around the galaxy when the Thargoid story appeared to be be a wee bit lame and longwinded. But since the first clues and videos of beyond I believe that FDev do know exactly what they are doing. Being a stock market listed operation does have its very own finicky implications. I know all this drama from another company who develop a software I work professionlly with. They´d love to tell you whats planned but the are not legally allowed.

I can now see and feel the future of ED and believe its gonna be amazing.

Yeah, it was in the allegiance tab. This was definitely a tease on FDevs part without them even having to say anything.

Or it was a mistake. But I doubt it.

We'll see in Tuesday's livestream whether it's part of Chapter One.

It would be cool to have Thargoid powers in Powerplay. That would also reveal what they look like.

No, just one stream of their civilization. There's at least 2 subsets who are currently 'Fate Unknown'.

Braben said that they went extinct 1 to 2 million years ago. What could be remaining is the AI and machines that they created.

It's a good point.

Having said that, in-game it's made clear that the exiles didn't die out alongside the rest of the Guardians (assuming that what Ram Tah's saying is correct of course). Maybe they died subsequently, or maybe something else happened to them. The scene's set for both possibilities.

(The AI is what I was considering as the other subset, just for clarity.)

Only extinct as far as we know. In the same way that we have only one race of Thargoids as far as we know in game).

Z...

He clearly said they went extinct. Look up the definition of extinct.

Around 5:16. "The Guardians that 1 or 2 million years ago went extinct. People are still discovering the exact reasons why that happened."

The only thing we could encounter would be their AI, the machines such as Dirigibles. Or their "entirely new organisms" which they created. Those could've survived and evolved afterward.

You can't make that statement, unless you happen to work inside FD and know the details of the story.

Braben made the statement in this interview video at Pax East 2017 around 5:16. Quote: "The Guardians that 1 or 2 million years ago went extinct. People are still discovering the exact reasons why that happened."

The Ancient Ruins are abandoned, because the Guardians don't exist anymore.

There could be a connection between the Thargoids and the Guardians.

It's also mentioned in the Ancient Ruins lore. There was a war which eradiated their planet. They had shield domes to protect their cities, but these eventually fell and the Guardians went down with it.

Yea, it's not like he could change his mind or anything...

That's unlikely, cause he clearly said that in the interview and it's in the Ancient Ruins lore. So while the Guardians are extinct, some of their creations such as the AI, machines and organisms could have survived.
