Planetary Graphics Comparison - Befor and After 3.0

Check it out: https://imgur.com/a/nGcIh

Planets shown are Altair 1, a high metal content planet, and Darkes Hollow, a rocky planet. Like all HMC planets, Altair 1 is quite predictably and boringly beige in the current build. It's composed of mostly iron and nickel, so it has a lot of rusty browns and grays in the new version. Darkes Hollow looks decent in the current build, with some minor color variations, but it is still quite beige. It's primarily composed of iron and sulphur, which explains the yellows in the new version. Overall, I'm very impressed with these changes, and I absolutely love how the composition really informs the visuals. A lot of people are saying that these changes are "only" bringing planets back to where they were at 2.0, but this system actually seems a lot more in-depth than what we originally had and, most importantly, it's even more fun to look at. Images embedded below as well.

Impressive image comparisons. I wonder if those textures and mountains translate to what is found at the surface. But then, they are probably showing us on Tuesday. If not, we will know in the Beta shortly.

But it is an impressive difference, all the same.

And to think FD couldn't see the problem we were complaining about for a long time !

They look way better than the weird cheese puff planets we have now. I don't know if FD ever explained why planets regressed so much over the past major updates, though I suspect it was for console optimization.

I'm hoping the Q4 implements things like dust, fog effects on the surfaces and canyons.

While the beta and live build are both going, I hope to see some more comparisons shared. From what I am seeing I am going to be impressed!

I hated Altair 1 soooo much because of how boring and ugly it is (had to do a couple dozen Skimmer missions there awhile back). Glad to see it’s getting such a cool makeover.

It was due to optimisation on both the PC and console. PC fps would tank just by going anywhere near a landable planet too. The change fixed It, but there were some unforseen consequences. Hopefully these new shaders will keep the performance while adding detail. Probably one of the reasons it has taken so long.

I just hope they won't overdue it. I hate the non-realistic approach (a-la NMS), in space games.

I don't think you'll need to worry about that. This update actually makes the appearance of planets much more faithful to reality.

I was very pleased during that last stream when I saw that they were in the Altair system!

I cut my teeth in ED at Solo Orbiter and I know that system like the back of my hand. The difference in the look of those two very familiar planets was striking to me, and I can't wait to see how my current home system looks after these changes are applied. :D

Thats funny... After the last NMS update which improved the terrain generation by a factor of 10, I actually put it above ED in terms of terrain realism.

We shall see if the 3.0 update puts ED on par with NMS or possibly above it.

I run both games on Ultra/Max settings.

According to the live stream, yes - the changes do reflect the actual makeup of the planet.

This did offer up some explanation, something about the chemical makeup of planets being used to calculate their appearance or something to that effect. Clearly whoever entered that data had a bad case of Cheeto-fingers when entering the data.

I'm curious about Mercury in Sol, it's my home system and I gather a lot of materials on Mercury.
Right now it's evenly reddish and quite dull to be honest.

Sol would be the ultimate test of these changes in terms of realism and accuracy. We all know what the REAL versions look like. It will be an easy comparison for everyone to make.

A few more days and we will be able to see. :)
