Modes 30 minute cooldown on switching modes

A three minute delay would probably cut down o 90% of the abuse on this problem.

I still fail to understand what the problem is.

Well, other than the atrocious mission generation, that spends 90% of its time generating missions that are of no use to me.

Switching modes is only a "problem" because doing so circumvents protections against undesired behaviour.

There's nothing wrong with switching modes. There's nothing wrong with stacking missions. There's nothing wrong with high payouts.

What's wrong is getting a new set of missions when you switch. This is not new. It is not even new knowledge. The devs explained ages ago how the mission list is generated. They also stated that it's hard to find time to solve it in a satisfactory way. So they leave things as they are. For now.

We've been having this conversation for years.

Cooling down switching would annoy people and only address the symptoms of a malaise which, whether you or I like it or not, has been deemed to be only a minor inconvenience by the developers.

best post here

You said 30, not 15, though 15 is still overkill.

Citation needed for the claim of ED being "the most exploited game ever."

Said the Ability to switch modes (a MAJOR game design point) was an "exploit".... so don't see any credibility or citations forthcoming

you guys really make up the most nonsense excuses to keep the game exploitable

That you think mode switching is an "Exploit" shows who's really making an excuse.

Much better approach: when starting the game first time you will select what mode your cmdr will be playing FOREVER.
You want to switch modes? Clear your save. This way we wont have intentional undermining in SOLO and griefers wont be able to hide in solo when they murder in open.

Problem solved. Fdev lets go!

Not even close... creates more problems but you know this already.

Anyone up for Diablo, hold on as i switch modes from single player with all my kit to multiplayer. Oh look i lost all my items to a high level demon. Damn i hate multiplayer going back to single player and let me see all my single player items. Damn it, lost them all in multiplayer. [where is it]

Diablo multiplayer is still running today with this mode switching and blizzard haven't changed it in all the years i first bought the CDROM.

The game is over 20 years old so mode switching has been around for a long time. Allot of older RPGS allowed players to mode switch with all your kit and you could also gain the system by doing so. Like in Diablo.

So really who cares how people play the game its their time there wasting.

DC out

1000 lbs of Cuebo Bacon for Diablo reference ^,^

Reasons to mode switch:

- Fuel Rat client in Private Group or Solo, need them to swap for rats to instance with them (quite common reason)
- Fuel Rat themselves in PG/Solo, need to swap to Open to instance with client
- in Open/Solo, friend wants to play in PG
- in Medium ship at outpost, NPC stuck on pad. Swap modes to actually land
- in Med/Large ship and AFKer/griefer pad-blocking. Swap to land
- exploring / pootling about in Open/PG, find pretty X. Swap to Solo for high resolution pics

Probably others, but I haven't had a coffee yet...

Solo is just a PG of one, so maybe they could in theory merge those mission boards together.
I've found Solo mode very useful personally, due to the lower network requirements. On holiday in Italy recently, in the mountains, and Open would just crash anytime another CMDR instanced with me, and at least half the time loading the mission board. In Solo it was much improved (warp tunnels would often take a while still).

Excellent points

I don't understand why you're trying to pick this fight with me. I made a simple, factual statement in response to a proposal made by another thread participant.

I'm sorry about upsetting you. Not my intent. We should be all players with different points of view.
I was just pointing out, that as some players have introduced me to the BGS, I started to notice that percentages go up and down all the time.
It seems that no matter whether in open or solo, reputation in a starport is the same. A plus or a minus after trading or missioning. It must be NPCs doing it in solo as well as open.
Sorry again, don't like fighting.

Edit: I should have just asked the question. My ramble was really irrelevant after re-reading everything.

ED community: "why do you care how others make money" on a game with pvp on where respawn is payed with money.

I'm not even gonna argument honestly.

The discussions on this forum are too dumb to even care, like its the first game that most people played and the internet is a new thing.

there.

Mode switching resolved.

You're welcome FD!

So you don't uderstand how people use it.

To prevent actions like Smeaton orbital grind 1 minute is enough . You have to flip so many times in order to get passengers it would make this so time consumig and not so profitable that people would just leave it alone .

But hey better break game for everyone

And even that's not always the case - I did a few Smeaton runs myself and never board flipped. I just flew to 4 or 5 stations in the local vicinity.

And yet, here you are...

mode-switching is a player solution to problems that exist in the game. Frontier should not worry about preventing mode-switching, instead they should fix the game so that mode-switching is a waste of time for players.

No worries. Probably just a misinterpretation.

That's because Solo play isn't your own private galaxy - it's just a mode wherein you cannot see or directly interact with other players. When you log into Solo, there are still thousands and thousands of players sharing the same BGS with you. So if you're in Sol watching the BGS shift, you're seeing the effects of play of all of the other players in Sol, whether in Solo, Group, or Open modes.

I'm almost positive that Dav confirmed in a stream once that NPCs don't have any effect on the BGS. That's because until there is a player instance in which to exist, NPCs simply don't exist.

Oh I completely agree that having (and posting) an idea is great, but I’d also add that acting all sulky when it’s shot down isn’t helpful. Christ, I’ve had some utter howlers of ideas. Anyone remember my ‘Westworld weapons’ idea? I still chuckle over that.

Speaking of Westworld, I just started watching that. Three episodes in and I'm not too impressed so far. Very repetitive and dull.

I really do appreciate the idea of selecting a perma-mode for a new commander - but I would like the choices be down to server level options. Open PVP, Open PVE, and solo. Grouping in wings for communication purposes should function as parties (ex. max 4) or as teams (ex. max 30) within the PVP and PVE servers.

I personally board flip to access multiple missions to increase rewards for a given play session. In the same way, I try to be mindful of meta standards for ship builds and pew pew mechanics to maximize my profits. I also use EDDB for trade, and Roguey to identify locations where ships and modules can be purchased. I might even engineer my mods to get more damage, better shields and stronger armor. I even found unpublished systems to grind rank, and run high credit passenger missions. I don't think using any of these tools prevents others from playing the game.

As it stands, mode switching also allows players to access the different levels of social interaction in relation to the tolerable risk a player is willing to take. A new player may start in solo, dip a toe in PGs or Open as confidence and skills develop.

Is board flipping that offensive? Are you aware I'm doing it? It seems like a very busy body notion to try to mess with it - unless you want to expand mission board offerings?

Yeah, not to go too far off-topic, but.... meh. It was OK, but I wasn't glued to the screen or anything.

You never had an argument to begin with and you are correct the "discussion" you started is to dumb to even care... just another person trying to inflict their game play preferences on others. And your last quip shows just out of touch you are with the ED community...

It also means a handful of pad blockers can perma-destroy CGs in open.

Mode switching should never be needed for reasonable traffic control.

The station should not allow pads to be tied up for protracted periods of time if others are waiting to use them.

For you dude. They have to do a special editon bound to your profile, with a 30 minute cooldown. Wait, you deserve more 8 hour cooldown.

Nah man. lock the missions to the modes they were taken in. If you logout you fail the mission.

This would be hilarious in my opinion. And actually makes sense to me.
Though there was a small forum meltdown a couple of years back when someone else suggested it.

Though I'm not the sort who likes to mission stack (it bores the thrusters off me), so it wouldn't impact me in any way.
