I admit I don't have any first hand knowledge of the new engineering system, but from what I understand, I'd rather spend 8 hours getting mats and guaranteed better results each time than spend 4 hours with the off chance I might get a really good one. Plus I could never really figure out (with all of the options) if one roll really was any better than the last..... There is something to be said for (more) certainty of progress....

Because G5 is better. And if something is not the best it is worthless. Dont think too much about it.
When people here say 'worthless', 'gutted', 'kick in the teeth', 'betrayed' etc etc it just means they are unhappy about something and lack the verbal skills to present a cogent argument. Here is what they mean to say:"I want the best, G1-G4 is not the best. I like to have the best ASAP, so doing stuff that isnt the best is not what I want."
Which is a fine opinion, as is any other. To which the answer from FD is:"We dont want engineers to be a 'quick pitstop for best stuff kinda thing, so what you want is not what we will do."

And once you have unlocked it, you still have to do the lower tiers every time.
You can't always though. I have a grade 3 FSD upgrade but I don't have the materials for a grade 4 or grade 5. That's fine, I'm going to explore with my 41LY jump range until I can afford the better upgrades. I don't think my ship is obsolete. I mean, by your logic, there's no point having any ships other than the anaconda or something. It's OK to not have the best stuff you know. In fact, sometimes the top end stuff is overkill; I just don't need it.
When everything is available at one place, yes. You're simply taking the worst option on purpose. 0Because G5 is better. And if something is not the best it is worthless. Dont think too much about it.
Using dime a dozen mats and data you will have hundreds of by simply playing the game.
Dont worry, unless you have gone through G1-G4 the G5 mods aren't available at that one place. So you're all good.
Then you're better off getting the mats for a grade 5 in one trip instead of multiple trips.

Which is a poor system. You're always better off going for grade 5. Why would anyone fly 400ly after unlocking Palin to do a grade 1 mod and then leave? That's a horrible waste of time and effort.
The lower option is always worse. It's settling for less.
It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't every single module every time. Like, get beam lasers to grade 5, now they're at grade 5. Starting at 1 and working your way up every time is ridiculous.

I flew to the centre of the galaxy with an unmodded 5B FSD, jumping at 25LY. It was fun. I engineered my 5A up to L3 and then wanted to explore some more so I did that. I didn't waste any time, I got to see many wonders and write many stories. If I'd have done nothing but search for materials to upgrade my FSD then that would have been a waste of time to me. My jump range is 41LY now, that's pretty good! Sure It could be higher, but I don't mind.
I know you won't understand, becasue as a minmaxer you have no concept of "fun", but trust me, everything's great.

Again, if you're going to go through the trouble of upgrading, why settle for the lower option when you can do it all in one go? If you're making the trip anyway. This is a horribly inefficient and unintuitive system. Starting at grade 1 when you just did a grade 5 on the exact same kind of module is terrible. You just did a grade 5. Why can't they just do what they did before?
Because I don't need to get the best right away. I like the progression, and I like doing other things. I told you you wouldn't understand.
EDIT: Also you seem to imply that 400LY is a long way? Just today I travelled 8000LY.

Same goes for the HUGE increase in mat and data storage capacity which brings the ability to store 100 of every single mat and data item in the game.

You haven't even used this new system. You have nothing to base your hatred off other than what you saw in the livestream. You have no idea if the required mats will be the same; you have no idea how much of a difference to altered mat/data stroage capacity will have; you hate it because it's DIFFERENT.
