Subnautica

Some friends and I bought it back when multiplayer was still on the table. Then that feature got sadly shelved, so the same happened to Subnautica. Now it's just sitting there in my steam library looking at me judgingly. But it's going to stay there for now.

You're missing out. It's a wonderful game. I understand that some people (raised by the games of this new age) can only enjoy a game with friends and playing alone is a waste of time. Multiplayer games are like sports. Great fun and an opportunity to socialize. But good single player game is like a good book. It gives you something wonderful and deeply personal. You learn something about yourself.

Anyway, what I wanted to say is that I just spent two nights in this thing and it's bloody perfect. :)

In case you ever wonder why it's such a brilliant game: It's no multiplayer game. Good luck finding an MMO that even comes close. :)

No multiplayer game will ever come close to well crafted singleplayer with fleshed out mechanics and enticing story. The focus is simply elsewhere. MMO that came close to my favourite SP games was SWTOR. It being basically eight stories in one game naturally means that neither of them is really epic, but they're good enough (Consular and Bounty Hunter especially) and the main reason I like it is that you can happily ignore other people and play alone. So yeah. I play even MMOs like singleplayer games. :D

Btw. I invested another day into Subnautica (started Survival, this morning) and it just gets better and better. :)

When I play Subnautica, I pretend that I'm an explorer in ED who's crash landed on a water world:)

True, but we bought it because they hinted for a co-op experience. Which they backed out of for reasons. So yeah, it's gathering dust for now, shall see. I know it's awesome, otherwise it would not have showed up on our radar. Same with Salt, really. It was a really fun little game about being a pirate on a procedurally generated sea, but once the multiplayer update hit, it became even better, seeing the others messing around. As for the whole playing alone is a waste of time, it actually is. Once I get home from work I have around 2-3 hours of free time, so I can choose to either play a singleplayer game, or spend that time with my friends in a game we can play together. Latter kinda wins most of the time.

Yeah, I hear ya. Well, don't lose hope. The devs aren't opposed to modding, the SN Nexus is up and something of interest might be brewing here.
In the mean time, if you have time (your friend have to sleep, sometimes, right?) I would still advise you to give it a whirl. It's an amazing experience.

Exactly! :)

Hehe, I probably will try to, but Square Enix and XSEED are onto me, both FFXII and Trails of Cold Steel 2 are slated for February. *shakes fist at JRPG addiction*

I feel that way about ED; if you remove the multi player experience from it, it's simply not worth playing. The funny part is that ED is the one and only game I feel that way about.

I agree with Chris, where he compared a single player game to a good book; if you're into that kind of thing your going to be really pleased with subnautica.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
So I've started a new game in this - my first since earlier in the beta. I have to say, it's really got me hooked! I've progressed further than I ever have before. I'm typically not so into the survivial/crafting type games, but this one is just so darn atmospheric and beautiful. Much like Civilization, it's got that 'just one more turn' (or in this case, 'one more minute') quality to it. :)

What is clicking for me is the combination of a mysteriously beautiful world to explore and a sense of ownership imparted from it's crafting system. Building a base at the bottom of the sea floor and becoming self sufficient is just really cool.

I have yet to build a base! That's next on my list.

I've just visited the alien structure on that island and saw the other ship that was going to rescue you get destroyed. I have the Seamoth but not the Prawn or Cyclops yet.

I started second adventure with Subnautica yesterday, played for a good few hours. I must say it has pretty good re-play ability due to the fact that you can build base whenever you want. I always went for safe shallows but this time I`m building near the crashed ship in the "mushroom forest" biome. Pretty good call, I`m close to the ship and some important materials. But is spooky out there. I dont remember having this much fun in a survival game since I first discovered Minecraft.

Once you've got a cyclops build a row of big lockers inside and take all the parts for a prefab base with you. Why not explore strange new biomes from your comfy chair via camera drones, filtered water and Chinese potato's just a short corridor away.

EDIT : Sickeningly cute thing found

Inside the base of the big central mushroom close to the lifepod signal for the important passenger found a small transparent egg with blue stripey thing inside, it's currently in an aquarium and seems to be about to hatch it has huge eyes and hit every branch whist falling out of the Disney tree.

Im hoping mods will add some basic weapons and tools to the game. I have had a issue with a reaper spawning in the starting area right next to the escape pod. Killing it with the rinky dink pocket every time is getting old. Give me some NS2 weapons dangit.

You can take it out and play with it and it's almost unbearably cute!
And it follows you around, but I don't know how to get it back to the tank, so I reloaded a save and keeping it inside, for now.

I just built the Cyclops!

OHH man that thing is cool. :D I can't wait to take it out exploring!

If only I didn't have to get up early and go to work. Grrrr.

I did the same, once it's out it's out and it got killed by the things that drop acid. Next time I leave it in a tank so I don't go on another prawn suit cute thing vengeance rampage.

It used to be indestructible but sinkable (and repairing a sunk one was fun) so I decided to see what happens if you leave it on fire with holes in it, turns out it explodes and kills you (if you are inside). So don't do that, especially on hardcore mode.

This time I won't do anything quite so foolish.

That cry of ultimate suffering you just heard was me dying in my 63 hour Hardcore save... while installing a thermal generator of all things. Got too dang greedy for power for my own good, trying to place the generator in a great place, and didn't notice my health bar dropping until it was too late. :(

Time to start again, and see what's changed in the early game now that the game has gone live.
