News Dove Enigma and the Enigma Expedition

By caving in and letting them do it without consequence you are giving them exactly what they want - proof that they rule this community and can behave however they wish.

That's what they want - to see the upset and laugh as Frontier do nothing.

The only win state is for Frontier to enforce their EULA. Everything else is a 'lose' where they get to continue being as toxic as they want while we placidly stand by watching the kicking going on.

I can't rep you again at the moment. But I fully agree with you.

In fact, I'd go a lot further but I'd probably get banned for saying what I really think about this whole sorry mess.

On the plus side, we have seen the vast majority of this community pull together and fix the mess a couple of infantile morons caused.

I totally agree. FD need to take affirmative action on this because, if this is all community is, a bunch of trolling creeps, the game will not have longevity.

Affirmative action or the wrong message is being sent to the world at large.

Well I am still on my way regardless of the lack of urgent need for my cargo. When I undertake a mission I see it through.

Besides, I have not been on a long run since my trip to Sag A* via Colonia. I will likely arrive on Saturday and maybe even get to see the guest of honor arrive on the 4th.

I am buckyballing my way out right now but I hope to get my name on a couple/few more ELW's on the way back.

Fly Safe Commanders!

Keep going :)

Sorry to bug, but is this just PC CMDR traffic, or is that across all platforms?
All platforms. The report updates hourly (on the hour) and shows the traffic for the previous 24 hours. (And it's specifically hyperspace entrances to the system - you could have 100 commanders online in the system just hanging around chatting, but if they all arrived 25 hours ago the traffic report would show zero)

It doesn't matter why, what matters is that they did. That's intent.

Why did Hitler do what he did?

Why did Charles Manson do what he did?

The impact of the crime(s) is more important than reasons why. If there is an intent to do it; it's a crime.

That's how it works in real life too.....

... there is something in Organisational Psychology about corporations having a social conscience.

In this case FD need to prove to the gamers here, the game industry and the world at large that it, as a corporation, has a handle on the big picture.

Keep going :)

Only 618 jumps to go. I got this! :D

If I had planned better I could have learned to do that neutron star thing and such. Instead I just went to Shinrarta and bought the lightest Anaconda they had, fitted it with a spare 6A long range G5 FSD I had and took off. My thrusters are even too weak to boost but it's all good.

Greetings Commanders,

Many of you will be aware of the recent delivery of Unknown Artefacts to the Dove Enigma, a prominent charity and memorial megaship relating to the Enigma Expedition. For those who hadn’t heard, you can find out more about the Enigma Expedition here.

The team have spent their evening investigating the deliveries and they believe the use of a known exploit is possible. We take the use of exploits very seriously, and we will continue the investigation. Should there be evidence of any exploit in use, we will take appropriate action against any commanders found to be using them. The exploit believed to have been used here has already been fixed in the current 3.0 beta, and the fix should be making its way to the live game when the Beyond – Chapter One update goes live.

Many of you have asked why a black market existed on the megaship to begin with. As you know, the galaxy’s background simulation manages the states and services of stations based on the faction controlling it. Because all dockable megaships are subject to the changing tides of the galaxy sim, the memorial megaship’s owner meant the addition of a black market. However, we also understand that this event was a finish line for the Enigma Expedition and in hindsight we should have manually removed the black market for a limited time while the expedition took place. We would like to apologise to Commanders for the upset we’ve caused. As with all our in-game memorials and tributes, they are added with the very best intentions.

This evening we have been looking into whether to take steps to correct that mistake, but I’m pleased to say that won’t be necessary. Thanks to the great work of our incredible community.

The Dove Enigma is ‘Experiencing Technical Issues.’ This means interference from Thargoid Sensors has been detected and – if not countered – will result in the shutdown of some station services, but this will not happen. From our view of the galaxy we can see an overwhelming number of Commanders taking flight in one direction and with one purpose: to counter the shutdown.

With this staggering outpouring of support, we are confident that the shutdown will be averted as Commanders arrive. Lend them your support if you can, and take part in this new and unexpected chapter in the history of Elite Dangerous.

To the many Commanders that have come to the aid of the expedition as well as the hundreds of Commanders taking part in this expedition itself: thank you. Seeing the community come together to support their fellow commander and support such a good cause is amazing for all of us in the studio. We’re sorry for our oversight, and we thank you for taking to your cockpits.

Well written - thanks Zac

I'm not s psychiatrist but I do understand the Terms and Conditions of Use of this site.

Thanks for bumping my post by the way as it's an important issue.

I'm sorry, but comparing real life genocide and murder to attacking a station in a game for reasons unknown, where it's a legitimate gameplay choice, is ridiculous.

But it isn't legitimate. Its a memorial for a dying person. And trying to act like that behavior is somehow not harrassment, but actually is something that should be tolerated is ridiculous.

Yeah; like I said, planet Earth has too many people like the scum who did this in game. This planet would be better of without them.

FD need to take definitive steps against them this time.

If a precedent isn't set then this game's longevity really will be over... and, as was said above, if FD don't get proactive on this it sets the bar low, creates a precedent where people can get away with whatever they want.

Just like planet Earth in Real LifeTM the game will be seen to be ruled by insane criminals and low-life scumbags.

C'mon FD the ball really is in your court on this one..........

Said it before and I'll say it again: FD need to clean house.

He didn't compare them at any point, simply stated other examples where we don't really understand entirely why anyone would do that. Might not have been the best examples but his intent was entirely clear - this is just playing awkward.

Gentlemen,

being relatively new to the game, so far I never cared much about its community aspects. Stumbled into this thread by coincidence, too.

But wow, what a touching story, and what a great community! This thread makes me want to be part of it, rather than just blowing up NPC criminals.

It is the sad truth that we live in a cold and unheeding universe, inhabited by strange and sometimes disgusting creatures. It is pretty damn good to see these counteracted by common effort, and to those who say like "it's just a game, why worry": yes, it's just a game. But be mindful of one thing: games like this have one thing in common with alcohol and drugs:
They don't make you an ******* , they just set free what is already there.

To all others: Well done, CMDRs, I am honoured to salute you! o7

All best wishes to CMDR DoveEnigma13!

Edit: there is a word missing now, I think you will know what I wrote ;)

This is a non emotional response, sorry if it annoys/offends.

The biggest error FD made in this affair and the years leading up to this was getting involved at all.

When its adding a station for a celebrity, Spock etc then it makes sense, maybe.

It is still pretty random to mix up ingame and out of game events but its a sci fi game & spock died so i suppose so.

Now its got to the point that they are apologising for their game mechanics -even though they are working as intended- as they are being used to affect the life of a player & their out of game situation.

What a confusing situation and the issue began when FD and the players tried to mix IRL and ingame activities.

If you bring IRL situations into a game & cannot control the actions of the other players then you should not expect a perfect outcome.

Reminds me of the now famous WoW Funeral raid event which happened over 10 years ago now, did people not learn from that and the myriad of other similar events.

Questions to be asked for me are...

Should a ingame event be held every time a active player has a terminal disease and asks for one?

How many of the active player base have died in just the last year?

Maybe mixing up IRL and ingame activities is a rabbit hole that is not a good idea to go down?

Either way its pretty obvious why most companies wouldn't touch this stuff with a 10ft barge pole.

Firstly (and I stand to be corrected) I seriously doubt DoveEnigma asked for a memorial in his name. More likely his friends who organised the event asked for it.

Secondly, while I can see the logic in your assertion, this would preclude making friends in game and consequently preclude any chance of an actual community. Friends do thing for friends (be it in real or virtual worlds) when those friends are in pain. If that is not to be part of building a community what is?

What you're actually suggesting (as I read it at least) is since someone who is morally bankrupt can spoil such things and create outrage in the community, we should ban the very things that help bind a community together (because if there's no nice things done they can't be spoiled).

Surely a better solution is have rules enforced within the online community that prevent those that would spoil the nice things from being able to do so (or at the very least face sanction if they try)?

F-Dev don't need to apologise for their game mechanics, nor should they use those mechanics as a defence for failing to take action against those who used those mechanics to cause hurt to an ailing member of their community.

What they should do is recognise the despicable behaviour of a couple of badly intentioned members of their community. Sanction those members for their actions and modify the game mechanics in such a way that whilst in game "illegal" activities can take place, they can't be used to cause such hurt in future.

Your solution sounds to me like cutting off a leg to prevent infection. My solution is to treat the infection vigorously to prevent the leg needing amputation.

Non-emotional or non-intellectual?
Had to read your post twice as the first time I didn't believe it.
I...ah forget it. I am suddenly tired and you are entitled to whatever thoughts and opinions you may have.
Like most things it's a question of timing sir.

No idea if DoveEnigma asked for the memorial or not however there have been plenty of requests to FD for memorials, i was not being specific to this case.

Its fine to make friends in game and create a community my suggestion was that FD getting involved is an issue, not the players.

Unfortunately there are "morally bankrupt" people in all walks of society and in all societies. Some people are trying to be edgy, showing off or just plain do not care.

If i announce to a crowd of 100,00 people that i am terminally ill 99% will react positively and with compassion but most certainly there will be that 1% that will shout out "i don't care".

Those few non compassionate people are not representative of the whole but they certainly exist and are not going anywhere.

I do not know how you came to the conclusion that i want anything to be banned... I was merely pointing out problems these types of events will cause, why devs usually do not get so involved, why it is not a good idea to mix facts with fiction and more importantly IRL with ingame activities.

I agree its important to help build and support a community with strongly worded & enforced ToS however i cannot think of any reasonable way to bring IRL events/situations (of the type we are discussing) into a games ToS...They are completely separate and cannot be mixed.

Some players do not want -or care- to check forums to know what IRL events/situations they might be affecting, it would be next to impossible to police and highly subjective.

F-dev have already apologised for their mechanics and the effects these mechanics have had on the event.

To me this is again a odd situation and not something you would see from other companies that have probably learned from previous mistakes and now swerve these types of "minefield issues".

Please do point out my logical/intellectual fallacies and i will address them.

Leave emotional discourse out of the answer though please as i was discussing the topic not the individual or being specific to this case.

I'm not trying to incite a argument. I'm however interested in why you think mixing IRL/ ingame is a good idea?

Especially with such fresh evidence pointing out the hurtful consequences..
