but oblivion is a singleplayer game.
in elite you either git gud or git got
Or you play solo, which is like a single player game.

Which has what impact on peoples courtesy, manners and attitude to others, which are presumably real-world attributes that don't get "turned on" and "turned off" depending on whether you're commenting on a Single Player Game, a turn-based PBEM game, a multi-player co-op game or a persistent multi-player environment...
He's making the same point I did earlier...
Compared to the other games communities I interact with...an (admittedly small) minority of Elite players/commentators seem neither nice, nor pleasant, nor helpful...which is diametrically opposed to how people behave on other gaming forums...
its only natural that when you have to talk to the people who have been harvesting you for salt and laughing at your (impotent) rage you are gonna get y. and its equally natural that a PvP'er is gunna try and twist the knife some more to extract a little more butthurt because its really really funny.
easy, elite D has a PvP component that can be avoided by lesser CMDRS if they wish.
a call of duty forum is all PvP players, so they know the deal and that they will be killing each other a lot as part of the game, a skyrim forum is naturally PvE so no one has any need to get salty because they cannot get to kill each other.
but elite, you take the carebears and their tormenters, the PvP'ers and what do you expect is going to happen.

the conditions do not make for civil conversation.
I think FDEV were hoping the community would police itself, BH'ers dealing with the gankers etc. They didn't realize the first major exploits would be criminals shooting each other in sidewinders to make money and clear bounties, and that the gankers would always play in solo only emerging to attack the defenseless then scuttle back to their safespace to grind some more seal clubbing tools.
Can't police yourself when players abuse the block function to avoid reciprocity.
2. Repeatedly attempt frameshift interdictions on known gankers
a. I realize this is considered griefing. But it's still in the rules, right?
In a world where players can interfere with and challenge one another, you are going to get less civil discourse.

Which begs the question WHY? (Aren't people capable of distinguishing between games and real-life...and presumably most genuine PvP combat is entered into knowingly and willingly by BOTH parties)
It also begs the question - given that Elite is a Space Combat Sim (ish) and that arguably PvP is a BIGGER more INTEGRAL element (either Red/blue server based or Force on Force encounters) in many Flight Simulators WHY the Forum discussions THERE are far more discursive and civil...
Some of what's posted here (including Gribleys comment for example) would get you insta-banned...so WHY are those Forums so Civil...as they're no more PVE than Elite is...
Sometimes the best course of "action" is no action at all. (in this case, interaction)
Attention seekers crave attention. Ridiculing them only provides more interaction, which is what they're aiming for to begin with.
Maybe once they've learned what "social cues" are, they'll change their behavior... just starve them out until they learn.
Time is on the side of the patient.
That's why solo, group, menu-logging and block all make them so angry they render them totally irrelevant.
So here's the thing: Believe it or not, most PvPers are not socially awkward, sociopathic, or in any other way disconnected from empathy or "emotional intelligence". You can throw those labels around all you like, but that only displays a decidedly passive aggressive attitude. Take me for instance: Im a PvP murderer. Granted I don't troll Sidewinders, and prefer my victims to be wanted, but I also enjoy murdering people 10ks LS from the sun in anarchy systems. Am I socially awkward? No! In fact the opposite is true. I've lived in 5 different countries in my life, I'm married, employed, own a house and car and have a circle of friends that stretches the globe. What gives? How does this fit your model of PvPer?
Could it just be, that PvPers don't see the loss of virtual items as something to be concerned about? You may argue that "oh no! All my time has been wasted!! I lost xyz mission/cargo/credit hand in when I died, that took me *hours*!" To which I say, what sad existence must you lead to have made yourself miserable for hours for the prospect of a measely virtual payout at the end of it all?
