Is there a docking request shortcut yet, or is it still 1-e-e-s-spacebar-s-spacebar-q-q-1

Voice attack and ASTRA voice pack.

Trust me, it's worth it.

Much as I love Voice Attack (its a godsend in VR), there are some quirks in the game, like the absence of binding for a docking request. Also, if you have an NPC in an SLF, his order will revert to Defend once his target is destroyed. This leads to to saying "Target Highest Threat" then "Fighter, my Target", (which he then acknowledges, every time) literally hundreds of times whilst in a Conflict Zone.

It's doable with Voice Attack - the issue has always been that the game partially remembers which tab you last used.
Sometimes it stays on the last tab, sometimes it resets to Navigation.

What would make the whole thing simpler is a set of hotkeys for each tab.

Docking has literally worn out the buttons on my Hotas.

For the love of your favourite deity, please add a key binding. Docking is the single biggest repetitive task in the entire game besides "Fire" and that can be held down.

I do get the whole "docking is a process" thing but I wish there was more of a reason for it to be one.

If you get interdicted, for example, then the process of dialing another system and then high-waking works because it's something you have to accomplish under pressure.

I wish there was something similar with docking.

You drop out of SC and find a bunch of hostile ships waiting for you.
You dart and weave through the enemy fire, your shields go down and you're taking a beating.
You desperately request docking, gain clearance and make it through the mailslot with half your systems down and your ship barely in one piece.

That would be fun.

Surely, all it'd take would be for the no-fire zone to be reduced to, say, 5km, you drop out of SC 15-20km from the station and you can request docking at anything out to, say, 10km?
That way you'd be able to request docking while still, potentially, being at risk from attackers.

Might be one for the Suggestions Forum :

- if found assigned, use the same Keybind used to "Recall Fighter" (= SLF Docking Request) to be used to request Docking when a Station/Outpost/Planetary Base is locked

After all, that "SLF Docking" Keybind exists already - so why not use it for our Ships to request docking just as well...
Any takers?

I tend to agree that given the number of shortcuts for other things, docking really should have one of it's own. Having said that I use VoiceAttack religiously.

Yep, Voice Attack

"Request Docking"

Done

Certainly proves in-game solutions to be spot-on when external tools are required to request docking permissions through means of clicking one button.
I just can't understand why it can't be bound.

Now THAT is a good suggestion!
Not sure what my family would think if I constantly say "dock!" to my computer... But I could use something else for the voice command, like "I love you honey" - then she'd come running to see who I was chatting with...

But if Voice attack can find a hook to activate the docking permission request, this must be possible to activate programatically in some way...
Some research is in order...

voice attack cant do more then the macro you wrote already into the title.
maybe someone requests an option that the interface does NOT allow loop cycling through the menues.

You could make a VA command with the docking macro without a voice command but with a keyboard shortcut. So, for example, put the command under F7 and request docking by pressing that. No need to say anything.

You mean it's not muscle memory yet? Doesn't even take me 2 seconds at this point.

I usually have docking permission before I realized I requested it.

Wahaaaa...dear muscle memory! I think i can still type: Load"*.*",8,1 (cannot find the shortcut for LOAD) within 2 sek.

Autohotkey (AHK) is pretty neat for those tasks. Like a silent voice attack. ;)
Customizeable and all.

Edit: Quick textfile would look like:
Code:
#NoEnv ; Recommended for performance and compatibility with future AutoHotkey releases.
SetWorkingDir %A_ScriptDir% ; Ensures a consistent starting directory.
SetKeyDelay, 50, 50 ; standard key delay. Can be used manually for special things.

;macro docking req on F1
$F1::
 send 1ee{space}s{space}qq1
 return

;macro pips to 4-2-0 on SHIFT+a
+a::
  send {down}{up}{up}{left}{left}{left}
  return

For me, that button is "G12".

I picked up a Logitech G13 game pad, and this was one of the first things I mapped to it.

these menus are hard to macro, the only easy solution, i know so far, is Voice Attack

unfortunately i cant get it to run on my win7 (still trying hard)

These menu's ARE hard to macro. Even VoiceAttack has issues - particularly if you don't do EVERYTHING with VoiceAttack (it gets "lost")...

I posted a simple suggestion a couple of times before a year or so ago. Give us the option (config setting) to "hard stop" the menu screens at the tops/bottoms and also the tab rotation. This way it would be VERY EASY to create macros which always started in the "upper, Left" corner of any of the interface panels. You could have a simple macro to put you in the upper/left by simply calling the "up" key the max number of times and the "left" key the max number of times. You would never have to worry about an "overshoot" or "wrap". Then start each of your functional macros with a call to your "origin" macro...

Simple to do, make the "hard stop" an OPTION if there is any concern about upsetting something (or someone).

But alas, our friends at FDEV don't seem to listen/appreciate/care. Its a shame for so simple an improvement. Some of the FUNCTIONAL things they could fix in this game are relatively simple. But lets not come down on them too hard as they have been really busy drawing facial hair for Holo-Me...

You mean it's not muscle memory yet? Doesn't even take me 2 seconds at this point.

Indeed, I find inputting the multiplicity of multi-key sequences to be a meaningful component of gameplay, and surely any deviation towards more single-key shortcuts could only lead to unsatisfied players.

Why does the docking request exist in its current form at all?

Why is contact initiated only through a list of NPCs when there is no purpose or need in game to contact any other entity on that list? They buried a required game mechanic that players use repeatedly under a pointless sequence of unnecessary clicks, first making you go to a contact list full of contacts that you don't need to contact, ever, making you select the station from that list, and then utilizing a menu that has one specific function, to request docking. The only way it would make any sense was if you could communicate with all NPC vessels and make requests/issue orders but you can't even do that. Burying the ONE active NPC communication requirement on the contact list was a horrible decision.

Basic UI design: if you only have one function, you don't use a drop down list. A button works just fine.

What if during combat in order to deploy weapons you had to go to the right hand function menu, click on a screen called "Weapon System" and choose "Deploy" every time you wanted to fire? Does that make it more fun, more challenging, or more realistic? Or just overly complicated.

Hint: the designers wisely chose to add the option to deploy hardpoints by pulling the trigger.

Why not do the same for docking permission, allowing a hotkey to acknowledge ATC's initial communication?

For me, the sequence is btn8+hat-left, right rocker, right rocker, fire, down, fire, btn8.
It's so muscle memory that I had to play it back in slo-mo in my mind to write it down. It's barely 1 second to perform. The only moment I slow down is to hold off on the second fire button until I get within 7.5km.

Same with landing gear is btn12+hat-down.
I haven't set it to a macro because I want to be "hands on" with my approach and landing. I am flying MY ship after all.
