I've been off of my xbox for a few months, and felt like hopping on Elite since it's been a while. I purchased Gold so that i could play in open, however I'm still getting the message 'your account does not have permission to use multiplayer features'. Any suggestions?

Yup, I suggest you ask support, but I'm willing to bet it's an xbl issue.
I am fairly sure of two things.
1) Since this appears to be an XBox live issue we aren't going to be able to help you here and;
2) This thread would be much better off in the XBox live forum and not suggestions and feature requests.
Suggest posting it there.

Got it taken care of. Was a network issue with XBL that made me think my gold account was still good. Paid it up and now I can play again. As far as location of the post I was just replying to what was here but I'll try and make sure I post in a more accurate forum.
That's fair enough, I was actually replying to the OP myself but got your post selected instead when I hit reply, it's not always obvious where a thread is when you search for an issue and reply so it's understandable yours ended up here. I hope the OP's issue was as simple to resolve.
