Why ive given up on ED.

Firstly, the worst in game storyline I've ever come across. Its totally dead.

There is as much personal engagement as a rock. It doesn't work for me.

And then, I found a game that does. Have a think about this. I like my ship a LOT. Whichever one I am piloting. Here's where FD screwed up. In assassins creed Black Flag, The ship works as it should in the water. As I am familiar with the sea, I let it do my work for me. Its not just a rubbish simulation of how water works, it actually does it extremely well.

I am way, way ahead of where I should be, because I understand this tactic, and the underlying physics of the game enable me to do so. Solid physics, solid gameplay. Surprise, surprise, you are ON a ship, travelling through a medium.

Which ED pathetically fails at.

1: There are no mediums in game.
2: Black hole my butt.
3: None at all. Its pathetic.

And I've just given up on all the bull.

1. You know that most of the universe is made up of pretty good vacuum right? that is pretty much the definition of... NO medium... if you are talking about nebula? you know that a good thick nebula is made up of like... 10 atoms per cubic meter compared to 2-3 in interstellar space right? Still pretty much no medium.
You want atmospheric flight... its not in yet... id of thought you might of noticed that, but did you know? Programming is not performed by the tears of crying entitled gamers.
2. Black holes optically are pretty good...they could be much worse. If you are expecting an interstellar style blackhole, you are falling for a great big dollop of artistic license. Yes the simulation in that movie is correct... BUT for a black hole with a thermal accretion disk...which is problematic because 1) Most blackholes have no such thing and 2) Thermal accretion disks are unlikely if at all to exist either. Soooo yeah.... your idea of a blackhole is apparently butt. if your point is that they are not dangerous... sure... i agree. they need to be more dangerous. Is your butt dangerous?
3. No idea what point 3 is supposed to mean, so... blah blah moan moan

how about... you chill out... get a grip on reality and realise that it doesn't really matter all that much, you don't matter all that much, I don't matter all that much... the developers owe you nothing, and if you don't like that, then, you have problems and need help. That or play a game you like that fits into your sense of reality... which again might mean you need help lol

Black holes should at least be black. We don't know for sure, at least until we get the Sag A* pic "developed," but the most commonly accepted depiction shows gravitational lensing up until the point of the event horizon, and then a literal featureless black void making up the inside of the sphere. https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/sa-visual/what-does-a-black-hole-really-look-like/

And what are you basing it off that thermal accretion disks aren't a thing? (genuinely curious if you can share any literature that backs that up.)

I'd like to thank the OP for giving me the opportunity to re-use one of my all time favorite memes:

Actually the OP had some pretty good points. Except for the bit about the storyline being dead. He was wrong. It's not dead. It's fossilised. It's like one of those funny little squiggles in an ancient rock where geologists can't decide if it was ever truly alive.

It (the storyline) is bad. You can pretend that it's not, but you don't have to look far to find that even high profile advocates of the game are jaded with it. Personally I think it's worse than bad - atrocious. Same goes for Powerplay, Engineers, CQC, trading (1984 here we come) and mining.

I'm guessing that his comments about the medium were a reflection of the completely unrealistic flight model, where your speed is artificially capped and your turn rate is somehow bizarrely related to it for "reasons". Apparently this was a design decision to try and make combat more fun.

The ships are great. But the marketing material for this game depicts things that pretty much never happen.

ED has failed to meet even the half promoted views of Braben during KS.. I realise things change over time but I'm not playing the same game that was pitched. For starters its become overwhelmingly story driven, and the 'story' has almost always been of an asci text variety.

There was a moment in time where things changed and it was around the launch of the game.. When it stopped being crowd funded, with Braben going against his previously stated strategy, and 'Frontier' took ownership of it..

ED isn't a bad game, its just a failure of its own meagre ambition and now a cash cow for shareholders.. I could go on but its pointless to delve further.

What was the point of this post? It's ok to not like a game, just go play something else. If you dont like it and feel the need to post something on a games forum at least offer some coherent feedback otherwise you're just wasting your and our time.

You and me both bruv.

I just cannot understand how all the ED fans get into the game in the first place, other than none of them seem to have the slightest clue what flying a ship thru space is like. To a man, not one of them seems to have any grasp whatsoever of the basic principles of motion. You hear the same idiotic cliches again and again, so often it's long stopped being funny. The fact that motion, and thus speed, is purely and arbitrarily relative is just impenetrably confusing and impossible to ED devotees. They honestly believe that they're having fun. That they couldn't be having more fun. They make canyon "racing" videos in their pathetic "engineered" Eagles because to them, that's "fast" - but not too fast of course. Speed has to be limited, because the fact that motion's relative is just too cognitively taxing for ED's target audience. Basically, the canyon "racing" eagles are just about the perfect amount of speed. Any faster would be boring and impossible, and any slower wouldn't be as good as an engineered eagle, which has just the ideal amount of velocity, no more or less, at full nitro boost.

And don't forget wobble mode! Sure, we're incapable of the most basic elements of actual spaceflight, but at least we can switch to wobble mode! It's reet skillfull, is wobble mode, and just like flying a real space ship, that's not only inexplicably stuck at a slow taxiing velocity, but also lost attitude stability! Ie., basically a simulation! Possibly even the last word, in paperweight simulators.

Plus it has microtransactions, so you can paint go-faster stripes on your wobbly paperweight! Et voila, Elite, non? Now off you go and "blaze your own trail", LOL...

Well if you want more wobble mode, you could always try Assasins Creed Black Flag I hear it's good at simulating how a ship should work on water.

Four words: Watch Isinona FAOff Videos

You will understand the game mechanics a lot better after watching those.

Im not fan of AC and people can say what they want but I dont blame you one bit. Im still going to play from time to time because I like the art style of ED and yeah thats pretty much it. As a space sim its "eh" at best and although it should've had much more going for it by now, combat is one of the fun things in ED, even with the ace combat like flight model.
