Why ive given up on ED.

I don't mind the current flight mechanics in Elite Dangerous, but I do prefer FFE's Newtonian flight mechanics. I think FDev wanted dogfighting combat instead of jousting. To stop jousting in Elite Dangerous, we have speed restrictions.

Black holes should at least be black. We don't know for sure, at least until we get the Sag A* pic "developed," but the most commonly accepted depiction shows gravitational lensing up until the point of the event horizon, and then a literal featureless black void making up the inside of the sphere. https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/sa-visual/what-does-a-black-hole-really-look-like/

And what are you basing it off that thermal accretion disks aren't a thing? (genuinely curious if you can share any literature that backs that up.)

I really liked these on black holes and their general weirdness:

Black Flag is probably my all time favourite game but I’m not sure I’d hold it up as an example of great mechanics.
It has 1 ship and the modes are slow/agile - med/med - fast/not agile.
Great fun game though .... and I have fantasised about my crew in Elite singing sea shanties while travelling like in Black Flag.

Be glad they didn't implement realistic space physics.
You'd be circling around your target for ages.

Agree about the black hole thing though.
Anyone remember the game Warhead? (had it on a Commodore Amiga)
That encounter with a black hole in one of the first missions... from what I remember.. intens!

Lol, Assassin's Creed Black Flag! Yes, Ubisoft are great at creating big, good-looking open worlds, but then forget to put any actual gameplay in them (though I do love collecting feathers); unless you count doing the same few things over and over and over again. Which is no doubt the same complaint the OP has with ED. Also, the main storyline in the Assassin's Creed series is straight-faced B-movie sci-fi garbage. I stopped playing Ubisoft games after Far Cry 3 and Assassins Creed 2. That said, I did love Blood Dragon :)

Yeah, I totally think Elite would benefit from the crew singing shanties while supercruising, and wouldn't it be awesome if we had some climbing, jumping and stealth missions whenever we dock, murdering everyone on the way? Oh! And on top of that the crown discipline of video game history: Collectibles! Find all the golden meteorites scattered on landable planets... Collect 100 feathers hidden in space and be sure to find every single chest floating in the orbits of gas giants! Yay! Arrrrr! :D

EDIT: almost forgot: since others already asked for your stuff: bye.

You forgot hunting space sharks. Will Belugas and Dolphins suffice :D

My view is that Elite is primarily a sandbox game and sandboxes rely on a bit of imagination and role playing by the participant. For example I was starting to get bored doing BBS missions in the Bubble so decided it was time to head out into The Black. Colonia initially, then see where I end up.

No other game has attempted to simulate a large section of the actual universe, so unlike the X-games (which I really enjoy) you really are 1000's of light years from civilization and there's no magic infusion of energy cells to jump you back to Argon Prime. I expect the novelty will wear off in due course, but arriving in an undiscovered system, putting my name on the star then checking out the planets within reasonable distance is fun and relaxing. Landing on a planet and heading out in the SRV... yes I wish there were more shootable rocks but when you come over a ridge and see the planet rings twinkling in the light from the nearby sun is a beautiful sight. Recalling my ship and seeing my Asp Explorer swoop overheard then land on remote is like being in an Andre Norton novel. All spiced up with a bit of Pertubator playing in the background.

At the end of the day it's a PC game I spent the princely sum of £19.99 on. It's entertaining and absorbing and, if it ceases to be I will simply take a break and play something else for a while - same as with any other game!

uh.. you mean Isinona's wobble-mode vids? yeah, no - that's not "FA-off". That's wobble mode.

This is FA-off:

Of course, if any ED players would like to teach me anything about "FA-off", or "dogfighting", or "fun", please have at it..?

I promise i'll try not to laugh. :|

12 seconds into your vid, a ship changes direction. Would you say that's a good example of FA-off flight mechanics?

Aaah, yet another happy customer...hopefully he bought the LEP!

So long & thanks for your investment in the game [big grin]

It's true the game is a bit rubbish - after 3 yrs it should be way better - but it's still the best in genre:O (of a bad bunch).

You should play Black Flag then. Great fun.
And AC Origins which is closer to Witcher3 than the AC series.

I know you were being sarcastic .... but I want to play your game :D

ED has failed to meet even the half promoted views of Braben during KS.. I realise things change over time but I'm not playing the same game that was pitched. For starters its become overwhelmingly story driven, and the 'story' has almost always been of an asci text variety.

There was a moment in time where things changed and it was around the launch of the game.. When it stopped being crowd funded, with Braben going against his previously stated strategy, and 'Frontier' took ownership of it..

ED isn't a bad game, its just a failure of its own meagre ambition and now a cash cow for shareholders.. I could go on but its pointless to delve further.

I agree ED is far from perfect, a lot of the design decisions in the game confuse me, esp when we see how they were implemented compared to how we were told they would be implemented.... (and I am not just talking about the DDF here)

but, looking at the glass half full, ED still delivers way more imo in that feeling of being a cmdr in deep space trying to make their way than any other game on the market.

most space games its just jump cutscenes from 1 skybox to the next and imo you never feel like you are in the middle of nowhere...... ED may not be perfect, but for me it is currently the best there is at what it does as a total package

Which is not to say i do not think it could, should and hopefully WILL be better going forward.
