Tell Me About the Chieftan

The 2 small HPs are pretty useless despite some advised to put railguns on them. It also has 3 military slots locked for HRP, MRP & SCB only :(
.
Actually the Chieftain has three small HPs, and i found it quite easy to keep them pointed to my target during the beta. The ships good turn rate really helps there. So bringing three railguns, especially now that railguns can reliably be modified for less heat, is a very viable choice. Despite that, i tried three enforcers on the small hardpoints in the beta and they performed much better than i anticipated, so that's what i plan to carry in life.
.
On the military slots: they are useful! During the beta, with the ships comparatively weak shields, you absolutely wanted to carry a combination onf HRPs and MRPs. If the info here is true, that the ship will get one of the class 5 slots upgraded to class 6, things will change a little. As the ship will then have reasonable shields, the military slots will most likely house SCBs. In either case the military slots provide additional survivability and unlike a raw health buff on the hull, military slots allow you to choose your flavour of additional survivability.
.
The Chieftain is a combat ship and as long as it's being used as a combat ship the military slots are no disadvantage. Only if you want to fit the ship for a vastly different role, the limitations start to matter. This is FDs way of saying "choose another ship". I consider that all fine.

Engineered Chieftain vs Engineered Python?

Both medium pad ships..
I love my Pythons, am I going to <3 a Chieftain?

It depends on why you love the Python. If it's because you can have Shields forever, and don't mind being hit a lot, you won't love the aChief. Otherwise, the aChief is a blast to fly, and fight in.

Yes, but for different reasons.
Better jump range, but hardly any cargo space.
Pitch/roll is faster, but that doesn't mean you actually change your direction of travel. ;)
SRV / FSD interdictor / ADS / AFMU / Shields / Cargo rack / Fuel scoop ... Pick any 5 (or is it 4?)

No idea. Lol

I'm curious too. I didn't get a chance to use beta.

Tempted to sell my Corvette to buy it if it's any good. Or just earn money to buy it. I have 50~mil too.
I had more, but I spent it on crashing my iCourier in to canyons. Lol

CMDR Cosmic Spacehead
it saddens me to see you still dont know how to use the corvette :(

So in conclusion:

Its fast but its slow
It turns very slowly and very quickly
It has good shields and bad shields
Its good and poor at combat.
Its beautiful and ugly.

never ask the ED community for an opinion, more divisive than a set of very large dividers.

Hmmm. As always I will be the judge.

To Whiterose: it all depends on your point of view. The Chieftain was announced as mid sized combat ship.
Some people assumed it would be a competitor to the Python - they were disappointed due to its lack of cargo space.
Some people assumed it would be a competitor to the meta FdL - they were disappointed, too.
Some people, despite the announcement, assumed it would be the next long range exploration ship - even those were disappointed.
The Chief is mainly a non-rank locked alternative to the FAS/Clipper. It won't straight-out supersede either of these two, and there's little reason to switch from a meta-FdL to the Chief.

To Pixxel Wizzard: unless FD have (massively) adjusted the price for the Chieftain downwards, your 50 Million might get you through the door, but they won't buy you a drink. During beta, you could reset your game and restart with 100 Million - that's about adequate for buying and outfitting that ship. You won't just need the hull and a few guns, you'll also need at the very least a big shield generator and some improved bulkheads, neither of which are cheap.

This loadout is probably different from what will go into 3.0, but even with only military bulkheads and 5C bi-weaves, you're looking at 80 Million (and a 4 Million rebuy...). Slap on reactive or mirrored bulkheads, and you'll break the 100 Million barrier.

Yep, that. The build I have setup in Coriolis spec's out at about 116m. Your discount not included. I would not trade in a 'vette on this as much as I like it and am looking forward to it. It did perform very well with my style in beta and as I stole whatever modules I needed from other ships I was able to fly it pretty much engineered the way I wanted...mostly. I found it to not have any heat problems even when popping SCB's together with careful trigger use while doing so. I tested without HS and it was very manageable. I ran a 5 Prismatic and together with all res mod SB it hung nicely. All said, I would not let any of my ships go to own it unless I really just either didn't like or care about that ship. Its roles are somewhat limited. Still, the weapon loadout is good and I am looking forward to 3 LR rails in the smalls. Good sniper. Should make a good wing mate or deadly pack hunter.

Since when has the Python been a "shields forever" kind of ship? I suppose for medium sized ships it's one of the better ones at that (still vastly outclassed by the FdL), but it's certainly not a Big 3 ship.
