Beyond: Chapter one - performance took a hit

I'm just not feeling the love in ED for VR right now. Every other VR game I have runs super smooth except for ED. No matter what the settings, VR Low to VR Ultra I get stuttering and tracking flash issues... then for approx. 10 minutes I get perfection, then its back to crap again (Nothing else running apart from Oculus & ED)

Moving from Dash 2.0 back to regular Oculus Home fixed the tracking flash issue tho'

I'll chime in as well. So far no noticeable decrease or increase in performance. Running with an Oculus on an Asus 1080ti founders ed. Ambient occ and shadows set to low, Most textures on Ultra except terrain which is set to high. FXAA, Draw distance almost maxed out, supersampling at 1.5. So far haven't had any abnormal frame dips aside from the occasional drop I would sometimes experience while in a busy station. I am playing from the tropics however so there might be some truth, it's possibly the netcode?

I'm getting stutters and tracking issues as well. Forgot to mention that. Don't know if it's ED's fault or Oculus'.

I've always felt there was a depth problem in VR. You can't tell how high you are if not looking at the altimiter. You could be 10 meters off the ground or 100 KM and it basically looks the same.

Not sure what kind of fix would alleviate this.

There always have been this problem, but not to the current extent. In games like IL2 or DCS no such issue, as well as in Elite asteroid fields. Something really wrong with underlying geometry here.

Finally got round to jumping in post update last night and everything seems AOK with Oculus so far, as it was with the beta.

Ryzen 1800X, GTX 1080ti, 32Gb RAM, Rift CV1. I launch through Steam VR, with the default Ultra settings and supersampling at 1.5

If you haven't tried it I'd recommend switching back to Home from Dash. I was having loads of issues with dash. Sensors turning off, white flashes and position jumping. It is fine with Home.

You can switch back in settings/Beta the hit the Rift Core 2.0 switch. It doesn't need to download or anything it just restarts in Home.

I was having awful jitters, frame-drops and what appeared to be tracking issues. But only in ED, all other experiences were fine. My theory is it started after an Oculus update. I fixed it by doing a Windows Fresh Start. This was last week with 2.4. 3.0 seems fine for me so far. Obviously before taking such drastic measures you should try easier things like turning off Core 2.0 beta and different graphics drivers.

I'm on Vive, 1080 and 8700k and I see no degrade in performance at all. The game runs smooth, no jitter at all, and I have High/Ultra settings. But I think in general the visuals are better but I guess that has to do with general gfx engine fixes.

Okay, so I think I'm in the framerate drop club - for some reason I seem to be locked at 45fps. I'm using a Levono Explorer WMR headset and was definitely getting better than that pre-update.

I've generally experienced better performance since Tuesdays dreadful performance but I still see frame dips in places I never experienced them in the past. The Station menus in particular and also when first entering a hanger. The only difference to my setup from Tuesday to now is I that exchanged my Inatek USB 3.0 card for a StarTek USB 3.0 card and that I was playing in a Wing on Tuesday night.

I should also add that I see frame dips when looking directly at light sources, this is particuarlt noticable on planet based while driving the SRV, but I also noticed stutter when a sun came from behind a planet.

Yeah, tbh I just don't think a 970 cuts it for ED VR anymore. It just doesn't have the power. That said, I noticed some frame drops around stations in beta, which i expected with a graphics update, but the live version is still running great. Even better than before, in fact - but I nuked my Windows drive, dropped my Windows fresh install clone back over the drive and installed ED fresh, instead of updating. Strangely, planetary surfaces are running better now with the visual update in 3.0, than 2.4 ran for me. That one blew my mind as I approached my first new moon, with the new surfaces I expected to at least get the occasional drop here and there, as usual, and maybe a few more... but no, that part of the game is working better than ever for me. I haven't tried Combat/REZ hunting though, since the update, so I may still take a hit there

As far as I can tell its not related to having 970 or a 1080. My 970 runs everything in VR at ultra without issue (its overclocked by 10%), but in ED it just stutters on every setting including VR Low with everything turned off. Get a ton of tracking issues too. There's something wrong with VR in ED, its no longer the 'killer app' for VR, more like a Star Citizen optimised build on a super computer (sic) if ya get my drift.

Then, just occasionally, its runs buttery smooth for everything in ED for about 20 minutes (stations, dogfights, Thargoid bashing)

The bold isn't true, you're just having a rough patch. It's still killer for everyone else. I don't know what 'everything' is in VR, but VR built games run better because they use simple graphics designed to work in the confines of VR. If you can run War Thunder, ETS2, PCars(1) or any other game that has nice graphics AND was designed originally as a desktop game, on Ulta - I'll eat my hat. A 970 is an old card, guy, and while simple VR Steam library games may run smooth - I shudder at the idea of running any of those games I mentioned, including ED, on a 1070 let alone a 970. Maybe you just need to do a dump & reinstall fresh? i7 7700K@ 4.8G (4.9 in Winter,) 1080@2050~2075MHz, 32Gb Ram@3200MHz, SSD for Windows, Seperate SSD for ED, Always the lastest NVidia drivers here

I'm beginning to seriously wonder if the FPS reported on the mirror window really reflects the frame rate in the headset. I had a reported 18 FPS but in the headset it was smooth as silk. No jerkiness, no juddering, just a smooth seamless docking in a rotating station. I know what 18 fps looks like and this DID NOT look like 18. This looked more like 45 to 60.

I was wondering the same thing, but opposite. In a planetary ring it said I was hitting 90, yet I saw some of the same studdering I saw back at the station running at 45

Weird. Just plain weird. Neither experience makes any kind of sense I can see. I wish FD would put change the position of the FPS counter if VR is detected (if fps display is requested). Say right above the information panel.

And I've never gotten any stuttering at 45fps. To me, 45fps is totally smooth, even in intense combat.

It is smooth. But there is artefacting from the interpolation that many find distracting and unpleasant.

There is also a fair amount of difference in how powerfully a cpu you got.

My i5 4670k was BAAAD when it came to artefacting.
The i7 4790k was a bit better but not a lot.

But having now moved to an i7 8700k and 3200mhz DDR4 there are nearly no artefacting when ASW triggers.

I haven't obviously tried the 6-7 series Intel cpu's but I expect they are both quite a bit better than the 4th series cpu's.
