Like, you mean, suddenly a fairly significant feature of the game is supposed to be totally ignored? Err... Okay... How many features in this game should be ignored? All? Most? Gotcha.

Look at the above thread and do some searches for MEF on youtube as well. I recommend setting up an inexpensive small pad ship with some jump range. (DBX, DBS, or Cobra III) Try for 30Ly at least. It should be obvious, but make sure you've got an SRV. You don't have to go overboard on the build either. Some of the locations can be tricky to find landing sites because some of the bases are located in the side of craters. A Python for example could work, but you'll be landing a few Km away in some situations. A small ship will get you to within 1 Km most of the time. Also, don't just drive your SRV, learn to fly it.

I usually do a set of base runs 2x p/month. Since 3.0 dropped, I've yet to try a run, but I'm due. Pre 3.0, I was yielding about 40-60 of each p/set. However, Frontier did get into the darn things and screwed with them. (YEAH, THANKS A BUNCH SANDR:mad: YA ...) So, who knows what the average current drop is today. I run enough of these bases to make it a 2 evening event. Cool down time is 7-10 days, which you can use for gathering other mats, scanning ships in SC, doing DWE scans, earning creds, or building things that don't require MEF.

I've never received MEF from Dav's data point, but that's probably just the RNG for me. It's worth a look...

Settle petal, where did I say ignore engineers, I just said they weren't mandatory. You were able to do everything in the game before the Engineers were introduced. You could still do everything in the game after the Engineers were introduced. My personal opinion (yes I am allowed to have one and voice it) is too many players are now under the impression they can't play the game, can't do anything unless they have a fully Engineered ship. The only minor exception to that is maybe PvP but that is such a small minority that it hardly matters. Can a player still explore if they don't have a G5 FSR capable of 50ly + jumps - of course you can. Can the average player still participate in PvE without engineering - of course can.

But for some reason now the current train of thought is you must Engineer. And if you can't find that mat you desperately need, then the game suddenly become unplayable.

Uhh, google EDpathfinder, go to bases, rinse and repeat. I just loaded up on a bunch of MEF. Quit whining and get busy.

It's never been easier to get MEF. Bases don't have a cooldown period atm. You can stay at the same base and scan it until you get as many MEF you want.

With Beyond Ch1 - no total 250 max data storage and mat traders, I don't see a need to do missions that either reward a specific data or you get it from data point scans.

I get plenty of data to trade just by scanning for Wanted ships and/or dropping into Encoded or Degraded Emissions USS, not to mention satelites.

MEF's are a key ingredient for some of the game's best end-game weapons. Expect them to be hard to get.

I got 43 of them by participating in a recent combat community goal, and picking massacre missions that had MEFs as a reward. It took a good part of a week, playing two or three hours a day. It also landed me in the top 10% of the CG. :)
