Quality of Life Improvement: Input LAT/LON Co-ords and have a Surface Waypoint appear, similar to the surface scan mission Waypoint.

Of course. They were holding off on announcing it, because it was part of the Q4 patch.

Frontier treats everything as if it was the plans for the Manhattan Project, or D-Day.

They never say if it it will be fixed or not.

Do the words "tin ears" have any meaning for them? :(

Incidendally, this is the same kind of mechanic used in EVE. Fire off probes to get a five-way fix.

Did they care about how many customers they would lose in the meantime? The dinosaurs said "no".

Months of radio silence, while they crunched on getting the dinosaurs out the door.

Well, we now know where we are in the food chain. :(

It's good that they mentioned that they want it.

What seems odd to me is why they can't include this in the Q4 update.

I added it into Captain's Log in about a week of on and off coding and UI design and all the code glue that entails -

It is sad to note that if what you assert is true then any normal thinking person could only conclude that there is a very poor Quality Control process when setting priorities for game improvements ... such a small investment in effort for such a huge improvement in game enjoyment.

I can see no reason why they won't add this in. It's simple to add, would take little time, and benefit all. Maybe they're too busy ripping off ideas from EvE... Does anyone else see the direct copy to Eve's probes? And Relic Scanning?

I installed Eve once but never really got into it, so have never heard of probes in Eve

I suspect what does take time is all the UI integration. The code is probably relatively simple in the grand scheme of things, but the UI team already look like they will have their work cut out with all the mining, exploration, squadron and fleet carrier additions, then adding this as well as planetary surface bookmarks and any other stuff they haven't mentioned may be a tall order.

Well, if it ain't implemented in the upcoming update I am just stop paying attention to it. If Frontier still hasn't put this feature in by then it's most likely it will never be.

Never played EVE myself but I like the probe idea as described so far. I'm all for ripping off ideas from other games if they're good ideas. Now if only we could get the devs to play Gears of War and take a look at that "active reload" mechanic . . .

Also remembering that Eve was originally inspired by Elite - according to Eve's authors, so IMO there's absolutely no harm done in FDEV gaining some inspiration themselves in terms of these new probes from a game which was inspired by FDEV originally ;)

Anyway, back on topic - it just makes logical sense for a space ship which can land on a planet, to be able to navigate it's pilot to a specific set of LAT/LON coordinates, and also for the ship's computer to be able to set a waypoint and also bookmark waypoints.

Agreed

totally agree-Not sure what year this game is at so far but Tom Toms and other car navigation have been doing this since 2000 onwards.

I think its 3304. The game is lacking a lot of what id consider to be logical stuff. If I can put a waypoint using Google maps...a high tech space ship computer should be able to do the same. It's strange how we can plot 10 000 ly travel distance but not calculate lat/con and use waypoints or send up a drone to map the area ahead.

Why wait till the big update in december, Frontier had to put this update in the game from the beginning. If it was up to me I put it in a hotfix next week!

And yet again Frontier failed to deliver the feature most requested by the community in this latest update. Guys, just one advice. Switch over to No Man's Sky. Elite Dangerous is going to be this for the next 10 years or so. Unlike the development team who is working on Star Citizen, this dev team however failed to communicate with the community in every single way. They as well just could be swimming in your god givin'money for all I care. They WON'T inform the community like the other dev team. Screw you guys I'm going to No Man's Sky.

People have given up and are playing with new ships instead? Maybe?

I'm mildly interested. But have pretty much given up on ED.

I added it into Captain's Log in about a week of on and off coding and UI design and all the code glue that entails - I had to learn about the Haversine Formula and I had to research into how to also calculate a 'direct' distance to a target location from an altitiude (CL2 does both depending on if your vehicle is on the ground or if flying your ship) and translate that into Python code - and I am just one guy.

Now. I'm not saying this is a trivial addition, as I don't know ED's code base and I don't know what goes on day to day in the ED offices or how dev time is allocated or even if they have enough devs there to do all the things that Frontier tries to get into the dev schedule for a particular update. On the other hand, to me it doesn't seem like it's such a monumental task to add something like what Captain's Log 2 now has, to the game, that it would take so much dev time away from all the other Q4 goodies - considering the outright benefits of adding such a thing to ED would give to all its players.
I can't imagine it would be more than a couple days work for a single dev. The game already has the capability to handle surface waypoints. Then they have to get the art department to design the UI. Then they just have to code UI to set the thing on the surface map. Plus extend bookmarks to save them. Then QA has to test it. Then it has to be merged into the code base for the next release... ok ok, a week of work.

But still, this would be much appreciated if we could get it by Q4.

A week a work for a normal dev team.

A day of work for a very competent developer working solo.

Several years for FD? Maybe never?
