Since no-one else has started a proper bug report on it I have lodged one, at the following link.

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/441072-Corvette-Razor-paint-job-has-really-janky-wavy-edges?
p=6898473#post6898473

I'd kindly ask there be no mention of asps nor midnight paint or anything else off topic, please keep this bug report about the corvette razor paint pack if you'd please.

Jay - if you want to submit an actual bug report you need to do it via these subforums: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php/124-Bug-Reporting

This is Dangerous Discussion, sort of general discussion for Elite.

Hi rootstrat, that is where I started my bug report I posted the link to. What I was meaning was if we want the paintjob fixed, we need to put it into the bug reporting subsection rather than just have a gripe about it in here where our gripes will get lost in a sea of vitriol.

Tru dat :D (I missed the link to the bug report, sorry!)

Although the developers read the DD forums as well, so it's very possible that they saw this thread, even if they didn't comment on it.

QA is reading as I type this.

I realise that I’m hogging/derailing the thread somewhat (apologies), but just to illustrate that the issue with the Black paint jobs only appears under certain lights, here’s a couple of shots of my Asp tonight. As you can see, it’s virtually invisible in the first shot, but turn on the ships lights and the patchiness begins to emerge in the surrounding area. It doesn’t look too bad here, but there are certain locations where the whole ship looks like c@*p

Honestly, that's just normal for all skins and all paintjobs and the whole game. It's an engine/texture size/texture colour-depth limitation and it's absolutely nothing to do with the topic.

I appreciate you're annoyed by it, but the pure, matte finish of black friday paintjobs just makes an imperfection in the graphics engine more obvious. It's not a problem with the paintjobs at all. The wobbly geometry on the razor packs is a complete farce though. We know it's a problem with the way it's done because some paintjobs exhibit it (Razor, Fusion, Pulse etc) whilst other paintjobs (pirate faction, hydra, onionhead, national flags) all manage straight lines and reasonably crisp details without this finger-painting drama.

Just an update, I got a refund from the support team for the paintjob.

But i am quite disappointed that they don't seem willing to fix it, and just continue to sell it in their store as it is. How about adding my screenshots to the store website so people see what they get beforehand? How many would still buy it?

Thats a shame to see you've refunded it. I had hoped to see this being fixed as a bulletpoint in one patch note for one fo the 3.1.XX hot fixes "* Fixed bug in geometry of certain paint jobs."

Almost looks like UV issues... Madness if it is.

That's really really bad. I was expecting some really minor single element or something but that is.... Wow.

You didn't edit that in Photoshop???

Can I ask, what are UV issues?

This "child's drawing" effect has been around since way back when the very first Vibrant skin appeared years ago (which I ended up asking for a refund on).

It's like some fundamental issue with how models are built skinned because it always seems to reappear.

Here's the same issue from maybe 2015(?), follow the red edge it just doesn't align, and the small panel on the left too, and the gaps around the landing gear :

you call it "skinned", those doing it call it UV-mapping - or the art of unfolding a 3D mesh into a single 2D mesh without distorting it.

a famous example is the distorted size of greenland on the worldmap that makes it look almost or even bigger then afrika

btw, the quality of the UV-Maps of those ship hulls is probably the reason why we won't get many really detailed paintjobs.
looks almost like they need someone at FDEV in that sector.

I purchased the Corvette Razor pack, which looks nice from a distance and on the store picks, but a closer look reveals a horrible quality, especially the chrome-like details that are painted on there, please see yourself (I highlighted some of the "problems" in red, but its quite self-explanatory):

Just one example:

Do you see that all straight edges are not straight, but strangely wavy? Asymmetric shapes? It looks like this all over the ship.

FDev should be ashamed of these, so are there any plans to fix them?

Yeah, I now routinely scan new paints for this by zooming in on individual shots in the store for this very thing. Its absurdly insanely low-class amateur-hour garbage, while charging premium real money for it. Its been going on since forever, and its absolutely shameful. Got no other words for it.

To be fair .. UV mapping is a horrible, mind numbing, terrible task, avoided by all sane graphics artists.

I know nothing about how things are done, but I do feel that, no matter how right you may be, consumers should be able to expect proper straight lines in 2018. This wouldnt even be good enough for free paints, never mind actually paying good money for it.

Yeah thats my feeling as well. I appreciate everyone's comments about the backgroud of this problem. But in the end, FDev should be able to figure it out and sell at least ok-quality paintjobs.

It looks like someone put masking tape on the chrome paintjob.

If they can't do it right then they shouldn't do it at all. There are tons of games offering cosmetic modifications, and I've never seen anything as bad as this.
