Game is doomed.

The thing is, I've seen ridiculous, over the top complaints about this game in earnest more times than I can count. I don't really want to white knight the game. I mean, if you don't want to play it, then you need to find something you like. But I don't want new people to see an inaccurate statement and think it's the truth. And that has happened as well. I've pretty much given up on people complaining about the bugs; I mean, yeah, they're there and that's not good. But at least statements about them are accurate. But when people start to say, "There's nothing fun to do," I have to take issue with that as that statement is misleading. There is nothing fun to do for the complainer. And that's laziness. I have been playing since Release in December '14, and I do a wide variety of things. Hence it keeps being fun. If all I did was trade, or fight, or mine, or explore, then yeah, it would get boring pretty quick.

Procedurally generated life biomes.
That would take a bit of work wouldn't it?
Considering they had an expert at one of their meets talking about the possibility of life in the universe and the quite frankly underwhelming NMS effort.
That would also fall under the heading "exciting".
Is it too much of a stretch to imagine that a large portion of the devs are working on something like this?

I don't believe one word of what FD says now. Even if they started plain talking without all the "Exciting" "amazing" ect. I wouldn't believe them anymore. Too many lies in the past to sucker me now.

Well, there is no requirement to believe them to be honest. There are no preorder for whatever will come after Beyond, and it seems FD is quite confident they have ball rolling to push game forward

The only "lie" I've seen is them promising offline play and then reneging on the promise. And I really don't think they wanted to, they just realized they had promised the moon and wern't able to deliver. They should never have promised offline play in the first place. But they did and went down a notch, in my estimation. If you can't keep your word, then why should others believe you.

But it seems I was wrong in this case as it seems to be an isolated incident. They kept every promise they made that I know about; except the offline play, of course.

I wasn't around during the great Offline controversary, damn always miss all the fun bits. A question though, did FD just not deliver Offline or did they come out and give a plausible reason why they couldn't achieve it? One is lying, the latter is just admitting defeat. quite different things.

According to Braben:

"This decision was not made lightly as we have been looking for ways to satisfy everyone. We announced shortly after we reached the conclusion that it wasn't possible to create an offline mode without unacceptably compromising the game,"

"Some people have thought this means there wouldn't be a single-player mode - to be clear, the single-player game is there, but it requires an online connection. Back during the Kickstarter, we were clear about the vision, to make a phenomenal new sequel to Elite in an online world, which we believe we are about to deliver. At the time we believed we could also offer a good single-player experience, and base an acceptable offline-only experience off that. As development has progressed, it has become clear that this last assumption is not the case."

So yeah. Maybe it was just admitting defeat. I still don't think they should have made the promise. But anyhoo, that's the only time I've seen them tell an untruth with the potential of intent.

Thanks, I imagine the original inclusion of Offline play was made during the initial kickstart campaign right. To a degree that is actually understandable, when someone is asking for funding they will list everything they hope to achieve in the hope that once they get funding they will have to ability to do exactly that. Sometimes expectations outweigh the hard facts of ability, it is unfortunately be definitely not unexpected either. It could have been far worse, FD could have continued saying they are 'working on Offline' to generate more funding (think SC) and never actually admit they can't produce the goods. Then yes, they would be lying lol

Fact here is that they only ever admitted not delivering this huge feature a few months before release - a surprise to many - when they clearly knew many months before that this was not in the game. You know that the previous Elite games were single player right?

This was only the start of the creditability problem for FDev where they continued the cycle of admitting omissions only after being called out or admitting only basically moments before it was due. This is the historical fact as to how things happened no matter what the fanbase/loyal defenders say today. Related to this is FDev's decision to not give refunds even though they were no longer delivering something clearly promised and expected - only to back down and give refunds after legal options were pursued by buyers. Yeah, interesting times back then. This should help explain the legacy they have created for many.

So what do you think FD should have done in regard to Offline? Continue stringing their customers along, saying they are still working on it? I guess you were a kickstarter, did you sign a contract whereas FD contractually agreed to deliver every component that was detailed in the kickstart proposal? Promises and expectations mean zilch in a court of law, especially when the company can demonstrate that they attempted to produce the item but were unable and chose to not include that feature as they were not contractually required to.

Yes a lot of people were upset at not getting Offline, sometimes companies make statements in advertising that they can't uphold. Would you really have preferred that FD focused all their energy on Offline and shelved the multiplayer aspect (I have read that was one of the main reasons Offline was a no show, it couldn't be part of the Solo/PG/Open infrastructure, it was either one or the other). No more PvP, no BGS, no Wings - is that what you really wanted? Has the game suffered because of no Offline Play? To a very small minority maybe, but to the vast majority, it wasn't missed.

I just think some here hang on to Offline as an excuse to throw trash at FD, simple as that.

Right answer? Deliver what was promised and do not cut the game short to meet personal bonus goals. That's a hard thing for many exec's to do. The game launched unfinished - no one can deny this fact. And it did so primarily so some would gain = shareholders and execs. Another fact. Don't kid yourself. But this is more common than not and sadly also not unique to FDev.
