Community guests at FD HQ on 27th for Q4 news

I think it's best to just forget this whole thing.
I'm sure the people at Frontier and the invitees had an exciting time but there's nothing new for us.
Yeah they saw nice things and were impressed, good for them, but because of the nda it adds totaly nothing to what we know, no point in discussing anything because there is nothing new for us to discuss.

If Fdev's intention was to hype the Q4 update this way then they utterly failed from my personal perspective.

This thread is a direct indicator of the level of interest, some people express it very badly but there's definitely a lot of interest here and it's spreading elsewhere.

I'd say mission accomplished FDEV.

How many pages is this thread so far?

Your amount of butt-hurt about this is staggering, this is like the 5th or 6th post of this tone from you. Get yourself straightened out, man.

I'm just getting sick of all the hype Fdev is trying to bring into the community.
So often they're revering to great things comming but they can't elaborate on what or when.
Now they're using invitees to shake up the hype, all the oohs and aahs but we can't tell you what it is.

Btw, who are you to tell me to get myself straightened out?

They are about to begin releasing new stuff via livestreams, beta followed by out to us all exactly as they've saying all year. Of course they are hyping it, they'd be stupid not to.

It's also completely free.

I disagree. In my opinion there can be a compromise which provides useful info immediately after the honk yet does not make the new mechanics any less useful.

Mengy - you are willfully blind about some things (your insistence on grossly overestimating the size of the Exploration community compared to the community as a whole), but that does not make you stupid.

If you can look at what was shown before this visit, and what has been said by various attendees since the visit with clear eyes (instead of using the Preference shader), then you should be able to put together the broad strokes of how this is actually going to look, and work, including the "elegant solution." I'm not talking about word descriptions, Mengy, I'm talking about seeing it in live motion in your mind's eye. You might be wrong on some of the fine details, but you are an intelligent individual, and should be able to answer your own question. You need to be able to put some pieces together from different sources and source material, but enough is there in total to paint a reasonably clear picture. This is not because anyone "slipped up," as it were, but because people have different ways of giving not-quite-answers.

Read the posts by those who were there again, this time without worry clouding your judgement.

Listen to the roundtable again under the same conditions.

You might not be completely happy with where that takes you Mengy, but I don't believe that you will be unhappy with it either.

Q: How quickly will October pass?
A: Oh, it'll only take a month, possibly just 31 days if we're lucky. AND we'll be in mid-November just 15 days later.

I assure you, more the weeks pass and more the days get shorter at this time of year.

You will see it by yourself.

:p

Good grief, I just knew someone would say this.

Well there you go, now you won't be disappointed waiting for it to appear.

Just imagine the codex as a really nice filofax. There's room for more pages in the future but that doesn't stop it from being a really nice filofax from the outset. And please for love of god don't immediately jump on my filofax analogy and read something negative into that too.

I'll thank you not to tell me how I should reply and for the record the Filofax craze died out years ago along with the yuppies, it has been dead for years.

True, they should be careful in case the gift horse bites them.

You know that there are some on this forum who somehow don't realize (or believe) that the free ride is likely over after the Q4 update.

We might get some updates similar to 3.1 and 3.2 that are free, but major updates like 3.0 and 3.3 will almost certainly not be free.

There are two ways to engage in a forum discussion.

1) Read the post. Take the time to digest the meaning of said post. Then reply.

2) Don't do 1) and give someone the opportunity to post this:

Of course it won't continue to be free, what point are you even trying to make?

Is that because they've milked every cosmetic they can, on top of a fully priced game? It should be free considering their major updates amount to a fraction of what some other companies pull off with smaller teams.

It's the usual problem. They can tell us it's great/exciting/amazing, but they can't tell us why.

Well, at least let's be clear, this is all on FD. It was their idea to do this, their idea to put an NDA on it, their idea to present it as if it were something we should be excited about. Just like FD's post when they put up a giant wall of text to tell us fleet carriers aren't coming in the forseeable future, and they are working on something for after the beyond series of updates (wow, who would have guessed that).

None of them are compromise. I just listened to Lave Radio ep discussing this and it is quite clear that nothing short of revealing full system map won't cut it...drive by exploration has to go to make exploration meaningful. Yes, it will be painful for some, but that's how actual progress gets made.

I'm really surprised that the Dev team are influenced by what these YouTubers publish. These guys rarely ever represent what I think about the game and don't seem to have well thought out ideas on most aspects of it. The reason this game is successful is because Braben's a smart guy and assembled a smart team to do what they thought was good. That's why hes got an OBE! The worst aspects of the game have come about by pandering to the outspoken part of the ED community. The silent majority might want the Dev team to ignore these guys and just do what they or the OBE guy think is good.
