Community guests at FD HQ on 27th for Q4 news

Is that because they've milked every cosmetic they can, on top of a fully priced game? It should be free considering their major updates amount to a fraction of what some other companies pull off with smaller teams.

Please note those other companies and please do not use NMS as example.

Also cosmetics are optional and I am ready to be lot of players do not buy them.

It's the usual problem. They can tell us it's great/exciting/amazing, but they can't tell us why.

Alec and Stuart told us they are excited. That doesn't mean you have to be. At least that's how I read in real life note book.

Of course it won't continue to be free, what point are you even trying to make?

No one has paid a dime for content since they purchased Horizons - for some, that was in late 2015.

In other words, they have gotten accustomed to not paying for content, and enough time has passed that some of them might complain about it.

There are others who will complain that they didn't get their money's worth out of Horizons/Beyond, and shouldn't have to pay for whatever in the future.

Did I really need to explain that?

Edit - Commander Whitman was kind enough to point out the date error in this post, which has been corrected. Almost 3 years of not paying for content, instead of the almost 4 years originally implied. Thank you Commander Whitman, I do hate to say things that are factually incorrect.

Yeah, despite the classification of the game as an MMO by FDEV, it has a tiny fraction of the features of a typical MMO. Charging full price, and then filling in features seems more than appropriate. There is never a free lunch my friend.

The plan was always cosmetic sales rather than subscription fee's. As someone who wholeheartedly approves of other people buying cosmetics but who has never once bothered myself I think it's a great approach. Thank you for any voluntary contribution you chose to make.

If you don't like the game toddle off and play something made by one of these other companies you claim to hold in such high regard. Whatever you do don't hang around after quitting, the forum undead are strange.

They are about to begin releasing new stuff via livestreams, beta followed by out to us all exactly as they've saying all year. Of course they are hyping it, they'd be stupid not to.

It's also completely free.

How could Beyond not be free ?
How could you have 2 different versions for C&P ?
For Exploration mechanics ?
2 different versions of Engineers ?
Beyond is little more than a series of (admittedly) big patches, i take it you're not suggesting patches should be paid for exclusives.
The two items they could have gated are new ships and possibly the CODEX, everything else is an update on already existing mechanics.
Again, a patch.
Beyond is an investment into what follows after.
Trying to make it more attractive to broaden the base for future premium content.
Coz you can't sell stuff that relies on Horizons to people who don't even have Horizons yet.
Let me add, unlike some other forumites, i don't believe for one minute that Horizons will be rolled into the ED base game.
I'm not dissing FD for inviting people who they think may provide positive PR in the long run, that's just business.
Once in while i just simply need to speak up against that "it's free" idea.
Beyond alters the base game and Horizons, both of which people have paid for.
And if ED decides it want's to improve on those products, they don't do that for altruistic reasons, but because they feel it's necessary for future business.

You know that there are some on this forum who somehow don't realize (or believe) that the free ride is likely over after the Q4 update.

We might get some updates similar to 3.1 and 3.2 that are free, but major updates like 3.0 and 3.3 will almost certainly not be free.

However, I think that these free updates were funded in one way or another.

Nothing is free on this planet, unfortunately

So, you're point being.......?

So because it's free I should just take it and be thankfull? And what if this free stuff is ruining the game I initially bought and payed money for?
It's not like I have a choice as with payed dlc.

Money is the least of my problems, I'm glad that Beyond is free because up untill now I definitely wouldn't have bought it.
Besides that, I've probably paid Beyond five times over it's price if it had one with the store items I got.
I support Fdev but I also tell them when they do something I don't like.

Great.

So, you can't tell us what you asked FDev, you can't tell us if they provided substantive responses and you obviously can't tell us what those answers were.

Least you had a nice day out.
Well, I can say they gave substantive answers to our hundreds of queries ;)

I did have a nice day out, and the great food and beer was free too (like with all FDev Meets) :D

How could Beyond not be free ?

They changed their release method as a result of the reaction to reception of Horizons, they've been quite open about that.

How could you have 2 different versions for C&P ?

The first one didn't work.

For Exploration mechanics ?

We get them next.

2 different versions of Engineers ?

Great isn't it V2's much better.

Beyond is little more than a series of big patches, i take it you're not suggesting patches should be paid for exclusives.

That's exactly how they described it, a season of free QOL updates for the entire playerbase. Or patches in other words.

The two items they could have gated are new ships and possibly the CODEX, everything else is an update on already existing mechanics.

Yes, that's exactly what they intended to do, they told us that repeatedly.

Again, a patch.

Yep, just as promised.

Beyond is an investment into what follows after.Trying to make it more attractive to broaden the base for future premium content.

Yep, nothing wrong with that at all.

Coz you can't sell stuff that relies on Horizons to people who don't even have Horizons yet.

I don't think they would want to.

Let me add, unlike some other forumites, i don't believe for one minute that Horizons will be rolled into the ED base game.

It could be, or it might be added as a freebie to anyone buying future DLC. We'll have to wait and see. No biggie either way it's been out for years, software always drops in price so it won't be a wallet breaker whichever way it pans out.

Since I already own both it's also a complete non-issue from my perspective.

I'm not dissing FD for inviting people who they think may provide positive PR in the long run, that's just business.

It seems to have worked.

Once in while i just simply need to speak up against that "it's free" idea.

It is free. The base game isn't free (yet ?) Horizons isn't free, but beyond is absolutely free.

Beyond alters the base game and Horizons, both of which people have paid for.

Exactly they are different in that they are not free.

And if ED decides it want's to improve on those products, they don't do that for altruistic reasons, but because they feel it's necessary for future business.

I don't get your point, nobodies claiming altruism.

So far the feedback from the people that seen what's in the Q4 update seem positive. Looking forward to the beta in the coming weeks.
No no, you're supposed to be furious. About something. Anything.

Apparently.

Weird, I know. But I'm with you - looking forward to it, despite the negativity that surely must be *hideous* for the developers to read.

to our hundreds of queries ;)

Hundreds ?

Can we have the list ? :)
The presentation/demo by Adam Woods lasted nearly six hours (including breaks and Q&As), and was split into a dozen or so sections, e.g. Mining was one section. After each section we asked many questions (probably two dozen on average) to which Adam, Laurence, Zac, and Ed, answered or found answers. Throughout all of this, Will noted down all of our queries and the responses, and they video-recording our reactions to many key parts of the presentation/demo. And other devs wandered in and out to hear our thoughts and see our reactions too.

Following the presentation, we relaxed in the cafe where more devs joined us (including Dominic Corner who I can see reading this thread now - Hi again! ;) ) for continued chats about the game - current, Q4, upcoming features, planned stuff, etc - and for them to gain our feedback on what we'd seen during the day:

"Did you like X/Y/Z? Do you think the players will like it? What further changes would you like to see? What are your thoughts on this?"

Then they took us (most of us; some had other commitments unfortunately) out for dinner and drinks, where the chats continued until late.

During the meal, on my table of 12 people (5 were FDev) Zac and Adam Waite asked two key questions of us all individually:

"What was your favourite thing during the presentation?" and "What feature do you most want news on in the future?" (My answers were "the sheer amount of Q4 stuff being added that hasn't been publicly announced" and "roadmap ;)")

Many hundreds of questions asked throughout, and I'd guess 99% were answered in satisfactory detail.
