C&P notoriety is trash for 100 reasons...

Yep, video games are the prime mover of ecological decline in the modern era. If we all stopped now, all that's left are international fuel companies and the MIC. One down, two to go!

Final post: Every little helps. The reason nothing gets better is because nobody thinks they matter to the ecology of the world.

Personally I have hamsters. They run well, and when they aren't hooked up to the dynamo they like to dig a bit and every little bit of digging helps with the Bitmining!

Also they eat my leftover salad, and I put their used sawdust and poop onto the compost heap. Ecological or what?

Yeah, no, bear with me just for one sec. I'm fine with all things recreational, really. Sex requires carbohydrates. Music is just air moving. I know we need one hundred liters of perfectly fine water to brew just one liter of beer. And I will drink it. Except if it's from germany.

But a game letting 500W of circuitry run hot all night so its players could skip the NPC cops the next morning is just plain stupid.

MMOs have existed since the dawn of time, then game developers have learned gamers are, as a whole, just a viral entity that will exploit and destroy everything mercilessly. Except FDev or so it seems.

I agree. FD should be ashamed for encouraging enegy waste, which is what C&P does. It may not be deliberately done, but encourage energy waste it does.

When people aren't playing, their computer should be turned off.

Dude did you even read his post?

The world is being hammered by people's waste, yet FD rewards he who would leave his computer on all day so a number on a screen reduces.

There's a reason I haven't posted much in DD the last few days.

I've joined a new community elsewhere, discussed FD's business practices and you know what?

We think FD is a prime example of a western business that only cares about money, everyone else be damned.

Seriously considering quitting this community. New place is actually hospitable and the people care about each other. I'm free of FD's grip now, as that much needed social space isn't a ransom anymore.

Have fun killing the planet, if you can take your eyes out of your Rift.

What kind of nonsense is all of that.
People are responsible for their own actions, especially when there is no pressure on them. This is a video game we are talking about: if you don't want to play the game as intended and instead let the computer run all night, sorry but whatever waste comes out of that is entirely on you, not the company as you 100% have the option of not playing the game at all. And no, playing video games to fill whatever void exists in the rest of your life doesn't make you any less responsible for your decision to play it in a way you may consider wastefull for the planet, grow up.

Hey commander babyface. You grow up. You'll soon learn basic consumers are not responsible beings when you get your driving licence and try to avoid death by traffic on your daily way to work.

I'd wager that makes the player stupid, not the game. Avoiding fake consequences by replacing them with real ones doesn't seem too sharp to me.

The player has control of the off button at any time, and while I've had games shut themselves down (usually unintentionally), I can't recall any of them that turned the rig back on unbidden.

You should check about this video from GDC where FDev brags about how they made Elite a massive timesink. Every game is a skinner box so the player being stupid is a given. The problem is not wasting time or money or resource on something stupid. I am stupid. Human brains are built to be stupid. But when I need to focus on my work and be efficient I can be a machine.

So did they actually try to focus and be a tad efficient when designing this POS of a timer for notoriety when someone brainfarted this? Did anyone at the meeting just said "Hey, it's gonna be fun, interesting and realistic. They're gonna wait ingame to lower it"?

The designer has control over the player's behaviour. Hate the game, not the player.

Consequences is what helps make gameplay interesting. As soon as consequences become virtually meaningless it devalues the gameplay.
I would say the current consequences (C&P 3.0) are not exactly meaningless, there probably would not be any complaining about the precise consequences if they were. ;)

IMO the only thing that really needs to be added is probably galaxy wide bounties for persistent criminals and perhaps those that engage in certain behaviours. Such galaxy wide bounties would not be payable off via ISF and could result in NPC bounty hunters and/or militaries chasing down the player - with no restrictions on the spawns.

Could the design be better? Of course. Does that mean someone who can't work their power switch is off the hook? Not at all. Not availing yourself of your free will doesn't mean it isn't there.

I'd counter-refer you to that dismissed lawsuit where obese people attempted to sue fast food chains for their advertising being so irresistible that they ate far too much fast food and became obese. Though the way this century's rolling that might be winnable in a few years.

You see, I can't send part of my power bill to Frontier to have them pay the excess power I use when I decide to let the game run while not playing it, the power company actually expects me to pay all of it.
I could ask the government for help with most of the bare necessities of life, but as much as we are a welfare state around here, the government wont yet subsidize my video games, and doesn't blame game companies for the way I, as a responsible adult, decide to waste my time with their products.

Who cares?

I would be interested to know what you think in that article is relevant. Assume I'm a bit slow and quote in big letters the most relevant bit that is outside the click-baity title.

Ah sorry that one was more in response to Tarman.

You're the big boy. Some nerd won a law suit against game developers suing them for his game addiction. Draw any conclusion you want from that but I just want to point out he may have used some of the cash to pay his energy bill. XD.

That's clearly not 100 reasons, are you numerous?

The link doesn't mention winning the law suit though. It's about a judge deciding that agreeing to the EULA doesn't mean the plaintiff waived his right to even try and take the game company to court.

That says the motion to dismiss the second complaint was dismissed as the EULA didn't prevent the plaintiff making the complaint

But the final outcome was the Court issuing an order dismissing the case with prejudice

If you haven't decided by now that the only thing you should be doing is shooting players instead of cops, then you haven't learned the lesson Frontier was trying to teach you.

I transferred all my stuff to a station with interstellar factors. Rack up 5 or 6 points for the day and then leave it running for the night docked. Like C&P never existed.

The poor new guys though...
