Fallout 76 Announced - Are you in?

Jenner

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
I have yet to find a Bethesda game I actually like. There isn't a single one, which comes to mind. Even when they picked up one of my most favorite franchises (Doom), they turned it into something I despise.

I bet when CD Project RED would make an Elder Scrolls or Fallout game, I would be totally into it.

It would be their own spin on it, which is fine I guess. Fallout3 and 4 are Bethesda's spin on the classic franchise, and it's not for everyone. I've played more Bethesda Fallout than Interplay Fallout, so if we judge purely on longevity then Bethesda wins in my book. It's a different experience, but not necessarily a poorer one.

We as gamers have gotten lazy. I recently tried to play Baldur's Gate and I simply couldn't do it. I'm afraid old Fallouts would be the same. Bethesda's Fallouts may not be good enough for "hardcore fans" of the originals, but for me they are the best Fallouts. :D

I only know Bethesda's spin since I never played Interplay Fallout. In it's core it's Bethesda's skill to craft open worlds that I find most compelling.

OK there is Obsidian, too, but I rather regard them askinda very crafty contractors who take a good framework and craft something nice out of it like in FO NV.

Having watched some footage now, I'm not exactly sure what this game is trying to be. But the fact there are no NPCs, no single-player game and it's heavily geared around the worst part of Fallout 4 (building junk) means I definitely won't be buying it.

It looks like it's definitely a survival/crafting game. Which is alright on its own, so with a Fallout skin why not, i would not consider it as a "real" Fallout game but why not, multiplayer survival games can be fun if they are done well.

MP was one of the reasons i was NOT interested in Fallout76, but i can also now add no mod support (for a year) as per this rps article:

'Fallout 76 might not get mod support before November 2019':

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2018/10/10/fallout-76-mod-support-might-take-a-year/

But in general whatever bethesda decide to do with '76, this fallout fan is not along for the ride. After Fallout 4 i just think they lost the mojo in terms of Fallout?

I don't think they lost the mojo. They just try a quick cash grab with content light MP. The one where the players are supposed to be the content. I doubt it works without giving players tools to shape and create their scenarios. Just a sandbox to throw in all kinds of players won't do at all.

Starting to feel like somewhere in the fallout 4 board meeting, someone put a pin in "multiplayer crafty survival". Right after "creation club" (cash in on mods and in game single player store) and yet another skyrim remaster.
I predict fallout "battle royale" somepoint into the future (late to the party).

Looks like EA has a new competitor in the greed and stupidity department.

I don't know I'd go that far.
I probably won't play this as it isn't really my cup of tea, but I wouldn't necessarily call it greedy or stupid. From what I've seen it looks like they did create something that will speak to many people.
People younger than us, probably, but people, nonetheless.

I watched several YouTubers commenting on it. It definitely have some spark, it doesn't feel a cash in. Said that, yeah, survival games are tricky for me (although I love Don't Starve), and post Fallout 3 visuals doesn't appeal to me. Said that, there are some very interesting nuggets of gameplay - like nuking seems to have whole interesting PvP/PvE/gathering angle to it (drop a nuke, get radiated zone, get new monsters and stuff to loot), which if done right, might be actually interesting even to watch. It is easy to forget it has completely new engine - and this is kinda testbest for it - which allows them to do this incredibly big world and hopefully fix tons of bugs which plagued previous Fallouts.

As for multiplayer part, some designs make sense given context - opt-in PvP (have to shoot back), player bounties - and some might be even relevant to space games like ED in future (although I do think current C&P in our context serves better, but there are some ideas to borrow to expand upon that, like player bounty and showing location).

Overall it feels more of big experiment company are curious to try out than big budget AAA game and that's not always a bad thing.

It also might be a 'cheap' way for them to test out their new client.

Cheap as in to develop, assets mostly already done (with tweaks here and there) from previous Fallout games. Obviously they will be hoping for profits from the sales.

Also they get to see how the client stands up to mp etc. So yeah, feels very 'safe test bed' kind of thing to me.

Yeah. Biggest part of Fallout game is stories and everyone following RPG development knows that's where majority of time goes into.

It really depends on price tag they will ask for this.

No, it was terrible, buggy and as with most Bethesda games.... modders and armchair developers fixed it and improved upon it.

I disagree that it was buggy and terrible, and I disagree that the popular mods were necessarily improvements. It took some time to get good at the build system. It had some quirks, but I looked it as an open ended 3D puzzle. If a piece wouldn't snap exactly like I wanted it to, I would approach my plan from a different angle, not rage out like a petulant child and blame the developers for my failure. Place Anywhere and Scrap Everything was cheating as much as infinite ammo or god mode would be. That doesn't even start to get at some of the people who figure out the group select tricks... It's amazing what can be done without mods.

Just to answer to few posters here - it does not use any new engine. It's same old engine Bethesda used since dinosaurs roamed the planet. Quite frankly they should throw it in a dumpster.
